the above poster re flipping tractors, personal experience is that doesn't happen, what does happen is their vehicle will ride up one of the rear tyres, and flip onto its roof right beside the tractor, and thus under the wheels of any oncoming traffic
this caused decapitation of both the driver and his passenger when the roof actually ripped right off their ute, and they were still in their seatbelts, the truck coming the other just made sure they did not suffer major disabilities for too long

I try to get off the road if I can, but 6 tonne of machinery and 8 tonne of tractor flipped on its side right in front of you is really going to slow your day down a lot more than being patient until I can get out of your way, if you really want to become a hood ornament on the back of the trailer then keep driving the way you do, if you actually want to get to where you're going use some common sense - you do not want me or my trailer bouncing into a culvert in the grass because you are in a hurry and push your way through, cos if we do its your car we're going to land on

henderson_guy, Dec 4, 6:04pm
Variable speed limit. As in the signs that light up "40" at the prescribed times. Not all schools at all. In fact, there's several around that light up "70" on country roads.

henderson_guy, Dec 4, 6:05pm
oops, how did I miss that!

therafter1, Dec 4, 6:18pm
I frequently pass in the centre lane on opposite direction passing lanes when there is either no, or single well spaced oncoming vehicles, and it is not at all uncommon for some polite knowledgeable fellow motorist to point out that I am over a yellow line lol

skin1235, Dec 4, 6:38pm
its cringe material at times, sadly it proves the point - they do drive among us - I've even had then follow me the whole distance along a passing lane, too afraid to pull out into that centre lane - ffs, the yellow line is on the other side of the white line along that lane
some people just should not have licenses at all

have yet to see a 70 at schools but do get a lot of cops sitting around schools with their ka band going and camera vans. both rural and built up areas. the kaimais is a gd example theres a little school at the top and quite often a cop sitting up there and also pukekohe school coming in quite often a camera van sitting there

henderson_guy, Dec 4, 7:16pm
Yep a school up the top but no variable speed sign. Not for the school at least. Kaimais are always crawling with cops, usually just past the crest.

stevo2, Dec 4, 7:28pm
Always see plod on this road. Always keep to 105kph or less.

henderson_guy, Dec 4, 7:29pm
I'm usually down to about 30

xs1100, Dec 4, 7:50pm
try him one day and I bet he would nail you for it, also whats with the new 80k sign now coming down the Tauranga side is it only 80 till the bottom now

msigg, Dec 4, 7:55pm
Yes I see your guys logic, re my above post, Safety is paramount whenever on the road and passing anything.

glendikoorey, Dec 5, 10:26pm
Actually it's a little known fact that you can legally overtake someone cycling even if you have to cross a yellow centreline. The Rule only applies to motor vehicles and "animal-drawn vehicles" (the Road Code omits this little detail). There is still an over-riding requirement to overtake with safety and due consideration to other road users.

hahaha yesterday heading into rotovegas comeing down big hill dble yellows nice and straight. tracto-
r. 8 cars didn't even slow just out and overtook lucky for me we hit the white line just as I caught him

henderson_guy, Dec 6, 6:18am
Done it several times. Not been nailed yet.
The 80k signs are once again a variable speed limit. The signs are activated during times of poor weather or visibility. The speed limit is 100 unless the signs say otherwise. Just like the speed limit outside schools doesn't change unless the signs say otherwise.

another classic last night, coming back into waverley at 9.30pm, tractor and wrapper
theres nearly 2 km of passing lane on the wanganui side of waverley, and like most passing lanes has a single yellow down one side, crosses over about half way along
muppet decides he must tailgate me the whole length, lights on high, yellow on the other side when he started, no vehicles approaching
follows me the almost the entire length, by which time he has about 6 vehicles behind him

then when he gets to the town end and approaching a left unsighted corner he pulls out over the yellow on his side and tries to drive around me, the utter muppets behind him all try to follow
by this time I'm near in the grass cos from the light levels in the corner there is a vehicle coming their way

vehicle 3 is alongside me with vehicles 4 and 5 hard up his chuff - straddling the yellow on their side of the white line - its no longer a passing lane there, its the normal 2 lane one opposing, -and a milk tanker and trailer comes barrelling around the corner

luckily the tanker drivers are well aware of the road, and that there are muppets, and was well left almost in the grass on his side too

last vehicle decides to wait till more road, waits until the yellow runs out, and pulls out like some great B train, just as you go between the council islands that mark the town boundary, and manages to pull out so far he clips the right side one, and blows a tyre, which then puts him in the right side curb.
I stop and hop out, he's still in the drivers seat, and I ask him if he's all okay - he then starts into abusing me
very lucky lad , I've got sharp forks on the front and would quite happily have picked his car up and sat it on a post for him, instead I just hopped back in the tractor and drove on - I'd have been quite willing to help change his wheel but for his attitude

xs1100, Dec 7, 8:24pm
well for the 3 days I had to go to Tauranga last week they were all fine with clear weather and no rain or water on the road so would hate to see them on a bad day

nzjay, Dec 7, 8:41pm
Yes, I thought there was a rider that you were permitted to cross the yellow line under certain circumstances.

bashfulbro, Dec 8, 7:40am
Not entirely correct, If a school bus is stopped for the purpose of picking up, or dropping off school children, then you must slow to 20kph to pass it.
However, if a school bus has stopped for other reasons you don`t .

bashfulbro, Dec 8, 7:48am
Correct, there is NO blanket requirement to slow down to 40 kph in school zones. that requirement is only in zones with 40kph sign posted, and only with approved signs.

intrade, Dec 8, 7:59am
i slow down when i see kids no matter what , i was a kid once and you dont think about that these vehicle drivers want to bowl you over as a kid , so i have to think for them as responsible adult what there actions might be like running after a ball is a no brainer if your focused on your game.

If a scoolbus just pulled over to let some out then i know there wont be any on the road and i wizz past the bus, however if its already unloaded them then you got to slow down because you dont want to bowl anyone over .
So i have variable speed limmit using my brain and that is what the police should be teaching , if it was about savety

We had savety classes in scool for bisicle riding by police and i seen the cops in switzerland still teach kindergarden kids how to cross the roads . so thumbs up for swiss police for that still been done.

intrade, Dec 8, 8:03am
its definetly not educational when you get a ticket for 4kph over you can kill a kid at 40kph even if your texting or facebooking while driving if you kill it with 45kph or 39kph wont matter in the case it be the same dead if you bowl it over without stopping .

tamarillo, Dec 8, 8:33am
You're right, I should have been more detailed. Problem is knowing whether it is picking up or dropping off! Unless it's really clearly simply parked up it seems you just got to do 20.

therafter1, Jul 18, 11:23am
Almost right . the SCHOOL BUS sign must be displayed, otherwise it is simply a heavy vehicle . Additionally, it may pay to keep an eye out for vehicles displaying the sign KURA, as Kura in Maori means school, so they are also school buses. There is debate raging in relation to it, but I personally wouldn't want to go to the bother and expense of attempting any defence in the courts in the event that I had maimed or killed someone's child.

5.6 Speed limits relating to school buses

(1) A driver must comply with subclause (1A) when meeting or overtaking a stopped school bus??
