Too Close for comfort

When the vehicle behind is so close that you can not read the number plate, how many meters would that be?
I don't know how they feel about arse sniffing, but it always makes me feel uncomfortable even though I am in the car being sniffed at! Any panic situation (like a tarp coming of a truck in front of me yesterday) and it's all over - my car gets a smack up the arse.
And no I am not one of those people whom insist driving at 60 in the 100 zone! Overtook one of those yesterday with the speed limiter on 103. They never seem to pull over.

Don't worry, Homosexuality happens on the roads all the time, can't think of any other reason some need to be that close to ya, unless they want to slam up your arse of course, which will happen if ya have to stop in a hurry. Good thing is it's there fault.

jmma, May 1, 8:26pm
Their speedo is not working and they are looking at yours (o:

mcscottwgtn, May 1, 8:35pm
You could be right

gsimpson, May 1, 8:38pm
Depending on the car flicking the rear fog lights on can make them back off quickly as they think you have touched the brakes.

trogedon, May 1, 8:38pm
A light touch on the brake pedal usually gets them to back off. It shouldn't be needed of course.

Don't even get me started! In peak morning traffic lately I've this happen a couple times. as in . you're at the speed limit yet someone's clearly running late for work or whatever and they intentionally barn storm up behind you about to hit your rear bumper pretty much.

The most recent occasion. I was at the speed limit on a straight piece of road. checked my rear vision mirror several times. all clear, absolutely nothing behind. eyes forward again. 'bout 10 seconds later (still on the straight stretch). look behind. whoddaya know. tail-gater.

SO frustrating!

smac, May 1, 9:02pm
I've done that in torrential rain before. As above he was so close I couldn't see his grill. Not actually braking, just showing the lights.
Next opportunity he passed me, pulled in front, then slammed the brakes on, full on lock up in a hundred zone, down to a dead stop ( I couldn't go around due to oncoming traffic). We sat there a few seconds, me waiting to see if he'd get out, but then he pulled away, and proceeded to tailgate the next vehicle we caught up to. I *555'd but he turned off soon after. Crazy mofo's out there.

measure it out. back up to a car until the plate is not visible and measure.
don;t forget to allow for weight ie you load the boot up and your car sits lower.

tweake, May 1, 9:27pm
never works.
most of the time they only hit the brakes if you actually slow down. brakes lights on/off they do nothing. so if you have to slow down quickly, they either hit you, go off the road or into oncoming traffic.

the other ones you see left foot brake and are on the brake ever 1/2 second.

then theres the ones that have super fast reactions. they of course are high on P.

Car parks are an easy way to work out spacing between cars.

Park your car, have a look out the back window & guess the distance for what you can SEE of the vehicle behind you.
Hope out & have a look at the gap

richardmayes, May 2, 4:31am
Changing down a couple of gears and using the engine braking is better.

No brake lights, no warning. Just a sudden and unexpected OH SHHHHHHHHH! that usually makes them ponder their actions.

bjmh, May 2, 5:39am
I used to tease my wife ,if she was driving too close. I'd say "yep those stop-light bulbs are" 12volt/ 21watt". she'd just fire up. but we usually backed off a bit.

brapbrap8, May 2, 8:51am
When I was a kid we had a tail gater go into the back of our boat, the outboard sliced their car open like a tin can, and ended up embeded in the front passenger seat. She had just dropped her daughter off who had been sitting there, I would say she learned a valuable lesson.
I get tail gated all the time driving tractors on the road, doesn't bother me too much though, if anything happens I will come out far better off!

allan_mac, May 2, 10:18am
Why bother with the aggro - just pull over and let them past. Let them crash into someone else's car.

pc_uncorrect, May 2, 11:14am
4 times a week, i travel 110k one-way to visit my grandies, i leave 3.30am & arrive at 4.45-ish, by inlarge no drama, at this time in the morning very low traffic volumes, truckies & other road-users courteous, 'exept' for tis one guy driving an 2013 hilux that loves to ride my bumper and shoot his high-beam thru my front windscreen, perhaps he's using some kind of weird 'automotive' language saying? hey mate, do you want me to push you to your destination?.

skin1235, May 2, 2:27pm
finally
just pull over,
into the gravel and hope it does his windscreen in

then you can pass him as he is picking the shit out of his eyes with a friendly wave

nzjay, May 2, 2:46pm
The really aggressive ones, I would say, are definitely on P by the way they drive.

muzz67, May 2, 3:05pm
Agree with Skin!

kazbanz, May 2, 3:34pm
just a thought guys--if you are on the motorway then why not pull across one lane to the left?
Ohh something I saw on the roads of one of our pacific neighbours. kerbside lane Max speed 90. Centre lane max speed 110 on overtaking lanes

gsimpson, May 2, 4:44pm
Fog lights don't work all the time but I remember on the M25 I had a Rover SD1 so close at 70mph I couldn't see his headlights. Turning rear fogs on and leaving them on caused him to nail the brakes so hard I could see him weaving and backing off rapidly. He came past me at 90mph with a red face (and probably brown undies) LOL
Depends on the car. I tend to drive Euros that have the fogs in the rear cluster making them look more like brake lights.

tweake, May 2, 4:48pm
the problem with that is they will then expect that from everyone. they will expect everyone to get out of their way and anyone who doesn't is deliberately getting in their way, so that justifies them smashing you off the road.

tweake, May 2, 4:56pm
the best method is go fit dash cam on the rear window. great thing about tailgater's is they get nice and close so you get excellent pictures of their number plate and people in the vehicle.
then pass details onto police via their website https://forms.police.govt.nz/forms/online-community-roadwatch-report/9

or if its bad enough call *555. they might get stopped by police. also they might be wanted by police anyway. i've had a few of those. most idiot drivers have a police record.

vtecnet, May 2, 5:11pm
I find it happens more when i'm driving a small car, especially hatchback style. my little Golf Gti for example, I get tailgated all the time, at 110km per hour. (GPS speed too). they sometimes backoff when it backfires and shoots out a flame. (not sure why its doing this hehe).

Drive the 5 Series BMW and it never seems to happen. silly mentality of . its a small car so its slow and in my way. despite 18-20psi boost in my GTI

lookoutas, May 2, 5:25pm
That's right.

There's two sides to this story.
Above - travelling at speed limit - nothing in mirror. Suddenly there is!
What's happened here?

I know - "Car behind is travelling faster"

Where is the best place for it to be?

I know this one too - "In front"
