Just tossing ideas around. The PT cruiser has quirky looks but seems to be reasonably well equipped Trouble is that horrible engine and transmission. I wonder if the running gear from something like a 2.4 camry could be fitted?

When I was a youngster in the '60s and 70s, people were always playing around fitting different engines into cars. I thought it was a lost art, but maybe not?

Plenty of it still happening, just a bit more complicated these days with the electronics involved (either the motor or the recipient car or worst case scenario, both). I'm pretty keen on my next toy being something smaller with something large shoehorned into it.

Only have to look at what the young guys are driving today to see that it is still very common. Most of those stupid lowered utes seem to have SR20det or 13b conversions.

One of the problems is all of the certification red tape you need to do now , years ago you just went ahead and modified the car with no problem like the red tape nowadays Plenty of modified vehicle around now .

Love my PT, only 2litre so not a rocket but so comfortable and well equipped. NZ only got bottom end stuff, whilst the USA had the PT Cruiser Turbo.

A Toyota V8 in a Chrysler?
392 Hemi crate engine please.

There was one in here with a Lexus v8 in it. Looked standard. A lot of work for really minimal reward.

You'd only bother converting it into a cube of scrap metal, no matter what drivetrain was in it the thing would still be a cramped and ugly turd that's still hard to work on due to the stupid front end styling and bonnet profile.

I wonder these days why you cannot simply buy any model car within a brand's range , with just a bigger litre'd engine , like say a Ford Fiesta with the normally aspirated Focus/Mondeo 2.0l engine for more easy-driving torque. Or a Corolla with a 2.5l because I want some more open-road power but don't want a Camry-sized car etc etc. Why is it you have to get the "top model" to get a bigger engine , with associated higher-spec. (and price) etc. when I simply want a bit more power/torque ?

ok I'd settle for a Donovan then

I agree but the trouble was so many were done without doing something to make them stop a bit better. AND of course when you allow people behind desks to write rules it all gets out of hand.

Because the law is very strict on car companies in regards to the average emissions of all of their vehicles sold. They need to sell lots of cheap and efficient cars to bring their average emissions down. E.g Toyota needs to sell a lot of Corollas with tiny engines or they would be forced to stop selling Hiluxes as their overall average emissions would get too high. If they made cheaper cars with big engines they would not be allowed to sell many so it would be pointless for them.

Ah , yes #15 , and Aston Martin doing the Cygnet (aka Toyota city car) was one of the "joke" results of that , is the emissions law not just a UK based one then ?
Bound to be the odd Chrysler 300C around that could be a donor?

I thought the introduction of the NZ certification process got railroaded by the NZ Hotrod association, hence all the b/s red tape?

Leave it on side of the road & hope some fool "converts 'it

Front wheel drive, fun putting a big donk in that thing.

Cut the roof line, install a Chev V8 and put some decent wheels on it and it would start to be cool. The factory model is embarrassing.

Pointless IMO going overboard. But a Toyo 2.4 like in a blade. It seems the yanks cant get any kinda HP out of fours and make em gas guzzlers. mehh it was just a thought
kazbanz,

nahh I'd wan't it to LOOK factory ish even with bonnet open

Yep, the other issue is dodging taxes in markets where its linked to engine capacity, or even the number of cylinders it has. It makes more sense to offer larger cars with smaller engines and just get more power out of the smaller engine through turboing or whatever than to do vice versa.

Had the cambelt replaced yet? You may not love it so much after paying for that.
