On a smallish car - what would you buy and why?

jason_247, Jun 7, 4:48pm
Well talking smallish i would probably go with the common 1/18 scale cars as you will get alot for your money.

they are big enough to play with yet small enough to sit on a bookcase or windowsill

jmma, Jun 7, 4:50pm
Toyota because it will go forever (o:

mainlander05, Jun 7, 5:07pm
A very underrated and excellent small car is the mitsi colt ralliart.don't listen to the idiot knockers.owned mine 3 yrs and been a great small car.fun and goes like stink when it has to but cheap as on fuel.must be the ralliart model tho.

msigg, Jun 7, 5:07pm
Nissan pulsar, primera, cheap to run very reliable good size and performance. Does everything you need.

vtecintegra, Jun 7, 5:10pm
Even a highish mileage auto is going to be way out of budget

vtecintegra, Jun 7, 5:14pm
I wouldn't consider an auto one

e. the Pug I mean. That Fiesta might be okay but the mileage is getting up there

sarahb5, Jun 7, 5:23pm
I'm not keen on silver for safety reasons - what's wrong with the auto Peugeot? Have never had a Peugeot but my brother had a 205 that ran on the smell of an oily rag for years - that was a nice drive

thejazzpianoma, Jun 7, 5:42pm
The Auto box used in Citroens and Peugeots in your price range is an abomination, both from a reliability and operational standpoint. Otherwise a pretty decent car though, so if you are happy with manual you can go that way.

thejazzpianoma, Jun 7, 5:43pm
Me personally. I would be looking really hard to see if I could fluke a Fiat Grande Punto for my 5K. it can be done, have seen a couple really nice ones go for that. Then you have what is basically a current model car, 5 star NCAP safety, fully galvanised, low maintenance, super economical and very well featured.

tgray, Jun 7, 5:51pm
I reckon a Toyota IST would be a good buy.
Go well, handle pretty good, economical and nice and modern looking with good safety features.
I have found them very nice to drive.
Toyota reliability, very reliable and can get one for $5000 if you look around.

pebbles61, Jun 7, 5:57pm
Mini or ADO16. Cause it's a fckn mini or ADO16

sharchew, Jun 7, 5:57pm
There are heaps of late model cars on Trademe for $5000 Toyota Honda Mitzy Nisson Suzuki plus the euro cars just go look

sarahb5, Jun 7, 6:09pm
Show me what you would buy then because I already trawled through all the listings and am even more confused now

sarahb5, Jun 7, 6:17pm
Possibly - and never traded before so I'd be a bit cautious since they're not local to me

sarahb5, Jun 7, 6:19pm
No - too old for that price - also son's ex had one, renamed sh*tz .

sarahb5, Jun 7, 6:21pm
No Minis around for under $5k and what's an ADO16?

henderson_guy, Jun 7, 6:24pm

I'm fascinated to hear the rational behind that pearl of wisdom?

gunhand, Jun 7, 6:35pm
On a hot hazy day silver and some light coloured cars can all but disappear in said haze making the possibility of someone pulling out onto a main road and not seeing you more likely.

sr2, Jun 7, 6:41pm
Any hard data on that idea out there?

(Always happy to learn something new but it sounds on a par with the old wives tale about your headlight on your bike making you invisible when the sun's behind you).

vtecintegra, Jun 7, 6:45pm
So why didn't they like it?

gunhand, Jun 7, 6:46pm
No idea about hard data but many years of driving and riding in many differing conditions has shown me just what I said. Some cars all but vanish in different lighting conditions. White actually stands out better than most. Charcoal is another that is close to tarmac colour and on a hazy day in a minor dip in road they can also be very hard to see.
So when parked at an intersection a quick glance may not be enough at times, mind you I think a quick glance is what many do at intersections anyway.

kazbanz, Jun 7, 6:50pm
so you have looked and figured out that some stuff is too expensive?

sarahb5, Jun 7, 6:50pm
Bad visibility particularly at this time of year
