Has anyone test driven them yet?

pros/cons?

carstauranga001, Apr 22, 6:29pm
Look far too much like the old model which is a bad thing.

survivalkiwi, Apr 23, 3:50pm
I have driven both the manual and auto. I stalled the manual twice. Very embarresing. I currently own a 2010 auto gls and before that I had a 2007 xls(both bought brand new) The new one is a huge improvement except that it does not have electric seats. I will look at trading up later this year but will also be looking at all the other utes and see what tickles my fancy at the time.

I have the first triton model 3.2L turbo diesel GLS 2007

other then its shocking habit of building up carbon it has been a fantastic ute.

dad owned it from new and I bought it off him last year, its done 208000km and other than a rear driveshaft hanger bearing and the carboning problem its been issue free.

Its good to see that they are lifting their game after a few lemon models

The auto has paddle shifts and the same power output as the manual now doesn't it? Might almost make the manual redundant.
The electric/leather seats will probably come in a facelift like the 2.5 triton got in late 2013 (I think).
All the utes are getting pretty good now, makes it kind of hard to choose.

That carbon build up is a pain, isn't it. My workplace had about 15 of those tritons, about 2007 - 2009. Same problems over and over - surging throttle when at about 2000rpm, aircon evaporator leaks, suspension not lasting very long, diff actuator in a vulnerable place and one where the power steering seals let engine oil in?

survivalkiwi, Apr 24, 4:19am
They said the 2016 field day specials may have electric and leather seats. Both of mine I bought during field days.

cagivachick1, Apr 24, 5:43pm
I love the look of the new Triton. said no one ever

joanie32, Apr 24, 7:07pm
My electric seats used to creep, ie: I'd have to adjust up to four times a day due to the backs slowly reclining on their own. Very annoying.

survivalkiwi, Apr 24, 7:39pm
Bollocks.

cagivachick1, Apr 24, 7:41pm
wear glasses do ya

3tomany, Apr 25, 4:04am
should a gone to specsavers LOL the last model was but ugly but the new one is a bit better

survivalkiwi, Apr 25, 4:58am
That must be why they are so popular.

gman35, Apr 25, 3:31pm
Either way Mitsi are certainly still struggling with the design of the Outlander ever since the >2010ish model.
The about-to-be-released one has a front seemingly modelled from the "Predator" Alien's mouth.

timbo69, Apr 25, 6:19pm
I think they look much better. but I think they missed some things that matter,
They have less Kw and Nm than their competitors and the tow rating is 400kg lower. All the new utes have good fuel economy, triton promotes the best, the competitors have far to high final drive ratios for towing. the above comments about stalling make me assume the triton is the same.

What are they worth?

timbo69, Apr 25, 6:22pm
This is probably more due to price. Six month ago the old model was 14k cheaper than a ranger, 10k less than colorado and 6k less than a nissan.

brapbrap8, Apr 25, 7:40pm
They are a smaller and lighter vehicle than their competitors, they actually have the best power to weight ratio of any of the new utes.

I know the 2.5 Triton has quite a high final drive, low box is nowhere near as low as a Landcruiser or similar, noticed that while we were picking up haybales and everyone was complaining my Triton couldn't go slow enough. 2,000RPM in 5th at 100km gives good economy though, and the new Triton has a 6th gear which would help even more.

Modern turbo diesels have far less low down power and torque than older diesels which doesn't help towing much either.

survivalkiwi, Apr 26, 5:03am
Sale price is about ten grand less than they are being advertised for on trademe. They said they are not allowed to advertise them for less than retail .

timbo69, Apr 27, 5:15pm
I had a look - I hope they are doing the top model for less than 50k or they are light years ahead of the previous model otherwise they are gonna struggle. an XTS ranger with essential extras(tow bar, ORC, deck liner) is a shade over 50k, colorado LTZ about 47k. The ranger takes some beating and for the same price as a triton the new triton better be amazing.

run out 2015 Tritons are $30k drive away

3tomany, Apr 29, 5:59am
Tritons have sold very well on price and value being the best ute on the market from a bang for buck basis but to compete with the ranger on price it will need to be brilliant, just catching up will not make it successful. I believe it will always need to be cheaper as that is the market they have captured.

lazzo, Apr 29, 9:29am
I agree. The Triton is a good ute, it's just nothing special, it is sold on price point, yes it represents the best value for money in the ute market and since its human nature to want good value for money they are always going to be popular for as long as they hang onto their 'good value for money' tag.

The guts of it is Mitsubishi Motors, the motor vehicle division, are struggling and don't have a whole heap of cash to throw at new research and development, therefore, in an effort to reinvent themselves they're trying to rehash old models, extend the model cycle of their old models and cutting the throats of some in favour of others as they see opportunities in the market places they concentrate on.

It's also worthy to note countries like New Zealand are such a tiny slice of the global motor vehicle market that New Zealand gets next to no say in any of it, there would be no market influence by this country. Some of Mitsubishi's strongest markets, like Russia, are certainly markets where their competition either don't feature or struggle so how they attack the market may not appear as sensible in some markets as it does in others.

At present Mitsubishi are simply doing the best they can with what they have available to them, and let's hope, much like Mazda did, Mitsubishi manage to bring themselves back to what they once were in the 1980's.

The Triton still rates very highly in Australia, outselling the Navara, Colorado and D-max by a huge margin, and having better resale value than a Hilux by most reports.
Only barely behind the Ranger in sales even.

Amazing what difference looks make, the Ranger is selling double the volume of the BT50 despite the BT50 being cheaper, better equiped and having longer service intervals.
I would say if they made the Triton look tougher it could be very close to the top selling ute.

My neighbour just paid $60k for a new SR5 Hilux, a vehicle that is considerably less powerful and capable than a Triton, its all about the badge I guess, logic doesn't come into it for some Toyota fans.

3tomany, Apr 29, 10:38am
60K for a hilux no way has your neighbour got a drug problem?
