Tier 1

A rugby crowd is a far simpler animal than a NZ motor racing crowd, individualists as a rule and less likely to be pulled into the branding wankfest that passes for following a team blindly.
Aussies seem to be a bit easier to fool into only having two choices but that sort of explains itself.

Just have an open V8 touring car series , all comers , with weight breaks to keep them near same performance wise , Fans ( & probably sponsors )have had enough of the 4 year spat between the 2 factions & the pretentious owners /drivers . Look at F500 they dont have sponsorship & most are owner/drivers yet can produce a field of 25 Nz cars , & the huge crowd at last months F500 festival show what kiwis want .

quickbuck, Feb 2, 1:16pm
May be the crowd is not so simple. That just makes the job a little trickier.

What ever the excuses, it is apparent that the only thing that works is events like F5000, Leadfoot, MG Classic. So what is different?

What ever Tier 1 is doing now and has done for the past few years has done nothing but push their audience and competitors' out the door.

It might take a little while but Ross Filepo has a huge task on his hands.

We need to keep an open mind really.
At the end of the day people want to go home entertained.

Probably the cost of being in the franchise has a bearing on the eagerness of participants, the organisers seem to milk it for more than it's worth by selling rights to everything as well as burning the competitors.

super tourers are good for holden/chev supporters but not worth watching for a Ford supporter. Classic car events will have my coin at the moment but i may splash out on the v8 Supercars at Pukekohe later in the year .

differentthings, Feb 2, 4:30pm
wouldn't it be funny if the super tourers became the support race for the 2k cup.

scarey65, Feb 2, 4:39pm
never lived up to its hype

and from what in told so much politics between teams

the haves and the have nots

towelynz, Feb 2, 5:17pm
I race in the 2kCup South Island series. I'm not at the top of the field, I end up mid pack most races. I haven't died yet.

While there are very few boy racers involved in our series, there's a few reformed street races for sure. If a series entrant is caught racing on the road, they get kicked out. We have entrants from 17 thru to 80+, many are new to track racing, but in saying that we have found the class is also bringing back people to motorsport who maybe sold their old race car years ago. There's a couple that have come from speedway too.

Yesterday we were a support class for the super trucks (all 7 of them), we had 54 entrants, split over 2 race groups. I think that we maybe we were the main draw card! ;)

Anyway, what I wanted to say was the coverage on the news last night although funny, wasn't an accurate account of the day. After one of the super trucks crashed and spilt fluids on the track, there was a time in practise when a few people were caught out. Makes for good TV!

There were 6 2kcup races, all went 10 laps, no saftey cars, and very few yellow flags. Yesterday's racing was close, and compeditive, and largely incident free. We aren't just a bunch of hoons I entering corners backwards!

sounds to me like you enjoyed yourself and will continue to race as and when you can. well done. from your description the racing was entertaiing for the public so they will probably be back. this is what motorsport in this country needs not a pack of ponces with aussie taxis trying to dictate when and where they will parade.the local series should be renamed pier 1 and driven over the edge. just my opinion but i have been involved off and on over the years.

youngones2, Feb 2, 5:53pm
lol. trade me needs a like button for that classic comment!

socram, Feb 2, 6:02pm
A like from me too!

Good on you towelynz. Great to hear that it has taken off so well in the south island as well as the north island. The cars are varied (one of my criteria for waking up) and driven with enthusiasm and without dodgem car tactics. That is exactly as it should be. Money doesn't talk and most of all, the guys are having fun. I bet there were no nit picking protests either or potential legal cases.

towelynz, Feb 2, 6:17pm
The whole thing is fun, BBQs at lunch in the pits, helping each other out, then having a laugh and a beer after. Any car irregularities are pretty much sorted at the time, any rubs on the track are settled by the person at fault, I mean the least you can do is say you're sorry right?

Random grid draws for 2 from 3 races also gives different race winners, and breaks up the fastest 5 guys in each race ,which gives everyone a go at the pointy end at some stage, even if only for a few laps!

Where do I sign? Sounds awesome!

Sweeet.
Now to find if they are running 2K Cup in the lower North Island. ?

Actually, I have found the faceache page. Interesting stuff.

I've got an idea. what about even more of the same old V8s that people have been racing for half a century?

That will surely turn motorsport's fortunes right around. ?

twink19, Feb 3, 4:49pm
muscle cars, SS 2000, pre 65. historic muscle cars, BMW open and a couple of grids of 2K. better than tier 1 will ever be

lookoutas, Feb 3, 4:50pm
Jeez - I spent ages last night conjuring up a jazz post. Then got disturbed and forgot to do the "Click" So here is a condensed version. (Due to the Cricket)

Like the idea of this 2K Cup - bloody brilliant.

Off to the Stock Car Teams Champs at Palmy this weekend. Two years ago I watched Peter Rees put on the best display of motor racing I have ever seen, or had ever hoped to see again - until his drive last year. Brought an 'Army of One" T/shirt, just to help the cause.

Unfortunately, his son Asher was taken out after the flag a couple of weeks back, so they are depleted. Spose they will lose one day, but only a good team will beat them. So this weekend will be good.

Heats on Friday & finals Saturday.

And what makes 'teir 1' better than 'teir 2'

Just saying, not taking sides, but just cos its promoted as being the premier class, doesn't necessarily make it better from a competitor or spectator enjoyment point of view.

socram, Jul 10, 11:59pm
Not in my world they don't! What we are saying is, just in case you are missing the point, it is that the current tier 1 is poorly supported by teams and also by the spectators, simply because the racing is rubbish.

So called tiers 2 or 3 or 7 have the numbers, have better racing and offer a better spectacle - which is a poor indictment on the whole Tier 1 philosophy and structure.

Tier 2 shouldn't be better - but in truth, it is - by a country mile.

I'm not sure that anyone is actually enjoying it - the spectators (live and via TV) certainly aren't.
