What a fn JOKE. the 2 v8 classes have to get togeather or v8s will die away. Never go to supers because there or no FORDs just chev powered thingeys. Fords are FORDs and Holdens are HOLDENS not chevy sort of race cars.Boy did they get this class WRONG? I know very few real FORD fans that bother to go to watch the supers

8 super tourers, 7 work utes. 8 Toyota 86, about 18 formular Vs. 18 minis. 20 TRS . total for meeting is 79 entries, total waste of time. last week at festival 300 + cars, what a joke
elect70,

!3 V8s supposedly entered so nearly half havent turned up , should fine them for non appearance like aussies do $10G if dont put a car on the grid . They reckoned we would have 16 this season. . The V8 festival on Nov 1,2 showed the way good crowd plenty of cars & action . With the other V8series only having same number of cars they have to merge or die . Christ there is more F5000 cars here than V8s make that the premier series & pay them good start money & V8s & Porsches as support class . WTF wants to see bog standard work utes racing .

Best racing would be. 1000km race for new bog standard production road cars (maximum of 2 of a kind) this gives the average Joe/Jo Bloggs as to how their car performs. Separate race for (same 1000Kms) performance vehicles.

Watching an endurance race of any sort is of limited appeal - even if the cars are exotic. Watching everyday road cars that are two a penny, for 1,000kms has no glamour at all - which is one of the reasons Tier 1 has failed. Lack of glamour. You need different classes at tier 1 meetings and preferably, a mix of cars in each class.
Racing used to be about watching cars you rarely or if ever saw on the streets, or if they were street type saloons, they bore very little resemblance to what came out of the showroom, especially when people transplanted exotic or large engines into lesser cars.
A few series for identical cars were successful, but not many. It seems that in this PC world where no-one is allowed to win or have any advantage, all cars have to be identical even though the end result is terminally boring.
Two classes of farmer's Utes racing is glamorous exotic or exciting and will pull in the crowds?

People look for very different things in racing series
There isn't any one "right" form of racing to appeal to all folk.

Something Dean Lonergan said on the radio that has stuck in my head. Stick with me on this because I am about to talk about oval all stuff.
He said words to the effect of the reason the Rugby League 9's is so successful is because the crowd have a team to follow!
In motorsport we are bloody shocking at getting followers! Truly we are!
The Farm Ute concept might sound like fun and make some great racing, but to be honest I was bored after watching 2 races on the telly. I didn't really know any of the drivers do really lost interest.
The only draw card that V8ST have is a GP2 star in the form of Mitch. I would say he would bring in more than 50% of the crowd.
It doesn't help that our other big names have walked out of the class for what ever reason. Okay, some have gone onto bigger tings!
We suffer the same issue with the bikes. I bet you anything right now that most of the public (outside of Motorcycling) wouldn't know who the current New Zealand Superbike Champion is! BUT, if you asked them to name a famous NZ Built Bike, then they might be able to name it. I say might, but would they be able to recognise a BSL500 GP Bike?
No disrespect to the current NZSBK Champ, he does a lot for the sport! In fact he spends most of his energy on keeping his club running and very little on promoting himself. I guess kiwis are bad at Self Promotion due to our culture/ Nature.
So the question is "How do we get people to follow somebody in our minority sport"
Remember Rugby League used to be rubbish in the early 80's.

Since the v8 super cars went to sky I have lost interest , same as the guys in our factory we don't even talk about it ,as for the supertours who wants to watch hybrids!.

what a joke that mess on tv today was post #11 the crowd drawn by you chosen driver would have been 27 i reckon. If he drew half the spectators

makes one wonder how the keep their sponsors, 8 total and down to 4 race 2, 300 + the week before and plenty of spectators

Yup, about that. an I think 4 of them are on this thread.
It was pretty rubbish to see one mistake taking out 3/4 of the field! More than once too. I mean if there was a FULL grid it would be of little consequence really, there would be a few cars off, but in this case it wrecked the race.
By full grid I mean at least 30. Yup, I might be dreaming, but V8SC can do it at 10 times the cost!
Goes back to the fact despite being 10 times the cost V8SC has followers because of teams like 888 (which most of the paddock loves to hate), GRM with a real cleaver kiwi driver and a European in a Swedish car, DJR, Wilkinshaw, Eribus, The Kelly Gang and the list goes on. All of which are very good at getting fans and providing something interesting to them.

i thought in winter all the tracks got together and told the two v8 classes if they didn't join up none of them would have a track to race on? what happened with that plan?
i like my top classes to have different cars engines something different to support otherwise a supertourer is no different to the mini class or nissan sentra class. Id rather go to a central muscle car meet

I fell asleep watching the first race of the super tourers. Glade I didn't stay awake for the 2nd race by the sounds of things. The 2k cup looks like fun, both to watch and to drive.
socram,

There are (many) critics of U2K Cup who forecast it was a load of crappy cars being driven by boy racers who would all pile into each other on the first corner and dozens would die, as the cars didn't need safety cages or full harness belts.
Personally, I think it is the greatest innovation in NZ Motorsport for decades. Would I pay to watch 4 - 8 super tourers, or two full grids of U2K cup cars? No contest.

Totally agree. It is just what we need for a couple or three reasons: 1) it is FUN to partake and watch 2) it is low budget so anybody can give it a go 3) it is an avenue where you can literally tell "Boy Racers" to take it to the track (Their skills, not their $20000 WRX Evo Skyline Civic Silvia)
Oh, and it gets the families along to a race meeting to support Dad or Mum, or the Son / Daughter in a sport they love.
socram,

. it also has some very experienced drivers involved and if you speak to them, they'll tell you that the driving is to a far higher standard than anyone really expected, throughout the field.
If I hadn't already got my hands full, not to mention the garage, I'd be out there with them too.

Good to hear. We do a similar thing in the Development Class for bikes too.
It might well be something we look at for the Ohakea Motor Sports Club to get people involved. if they are running the class in the Manawatu.

One day, the powers that be will realise that the top of the pyramid is very tiny and they really should be looking at the base. The old 80/20 theory strikes again.
