What would YOU do?

Its late in the day and you are in a carpark about to walk up the road to have a cool bevvie and a bit of a feed.
A few meters from your car you spot a wallet laying on the ground.
You pick it up and its bulging with money and credit cards.
What do you do?

henderson_guy, Jan 20, 4:14pm
Personally. I'd look for a license or similar so I could track down the owner. But first I'd have my bevvie and feed!

gunhand, Jan 20, 4:16pm
What side of the tracks am I from?

daryl14, Jan 20, 4:32pm
I'd assume I'd already been spotted (and/or photographed) picking it up.

Look for the drivers licence then google the dude on my phone.

Isn't it funny how people don't think to put their contact details in their wallets or cell phones.
Used to get so many wallets /purses/ phones / car keys/house keys handed to me when working security that had no obvious contact details in them.

The other strange thing is how many people don't come back for them.

thejazzpianoma, Jan 20, 4:51pm
This. even if there is no ID, ring their bank, give them the persons eftpos card number and have them have the owner contact you. Do this as a last resort as the bank will also cancel all their cards once they know the wallet is missing which is a pain for the owner.

The very very last option for me would be the Police, especially given you are in Auckland. I would rate the chances of return very low, especially if you were unable to locate the owner, the Police certainly won't be putting in as much effort as you have.

treachug, Jan 20, 5:15pm
Same. no doubt in my mind. try to find the owner but eat before sleuthing

mojo49, Jan 20, 5:21pm
Make sure my hoodie was properly covering my head before I picked it up. Then have a bit of a think while having the bevvie and chips. The outcome could depend entirely on the number of bevvies!

lookoutas, Jan 20, 5:27pm
We all know you're an honest guy.

rbd, Jan 20, 5:27pm
I lost my wallet just up the road from where you were! Where can I pick it up?

craigs_workshop, Jan 20, 5:37pm
everyone loves to get their wallet back after losing it, so the thing to do when your the finder instead of the loser is obvious isnt it

. . . . . . if only

msigg, Jan 20, 5:44pm
Give it to the POLICE. Unlike Jazz I have a good associations with the police. They will record your details and try contact the owners. If after 3 months no one has claimed it then they will call you and give it to you. All legit. Peace of mind,

I have had his happen. Found a wallet had a fair amount of cash. Tracked the driver down via his fuel card. He came picked it up. Gave me the money that was in there too! I didn't want it but he insisted. Found another behind a toilet where I do a billboard. Tracked the young girl that owned it via fbook and dropped it off to her work. Same with a few phones etc I have found. With social media it's really easy to track a person down

poppajn, Jan 20, 6:17pm
Won't matter Mark, you wouldn't find a bulging wallet in Mataura, but now Gore would depend on West or East Gore.

jason_247, Jan 20, 6:35pm
i do a contact number.
its all thats really needed in the days of identity theft, giving out address etc is just asking for trouble

that being said i dont lose my wallet

extrayda, Jan 20, 6:37pm
I found one a few years back (Moselle Ave so West).
There was about $70 cash in it, credit card etc., and some details which enabled me to find the owner, and give her a call. Dropped it off to her on Moselle Ave about an hour after I had found it.
Wasn't as grateful as I would have been - maybe I just looked dodgy !
That's what I would hope someone would do for me (unlikely I know).

extrayda, Jan 20, 6:38pm
Unless of course it belonged to a local car dealer, in which case I would keep the money and max out any Credit Cards ;-)

Has anyone lost a roll of twenties in a rubber band?
Let me know, I've found your rubber band.

brapbrap8, Jan 20, 7:16pm
I keep a half dozen of my business cards in my wallet, hopefully someone would take the initiative to give me a call if they found it!

ferrarigirl, Jan 20, 7:19pm
lol- this!

skull, Jan 20, 7:26pm
Everyone would know it's yours, thin like a birthday card & when you open it up it goes brap brap.

200sx, Jan 20, 7:53pm
Your response to this is a direct reflection of who you are as a person. I came across a full wallet at the Wellington 7's a few years ago. For about 5 seconds I thought about pocketing it then realised how much I'd be spewing if I had lost my wallet. Went through the white pages, 3rd number called was the young mans parents - met him at his seat the following day. With something like this you should always try and do the right thing.

You can buy cheap wallets at Bunnings. Cheaper if you buy ten at a time.
