That last one is pushing the boundaries more than a "bit"!

crankypants69, Dec 17, 7:27am
Shit I thought those days were all but over, must still be a few cowboys around. We have gps regularly audited and if breaks don't match with logbooks we get our arses kicked!

bashfulbro, Dec 17, 7:34am
Yes cranky, it`s not always the company, drivers are as bad, you can tell them , but once out there, they are in control.
The chain of responsibility laws, are a big plus, and when the new Health & Safety rules kick in, god help the bosses who choose to bend them. I`m picking that they will cover this area even more thoroughly.

I've got a feeling that company will be feeling a "tad" uncomfortable at the moment

henderson_guy, Dec 17, 7:07pm
I'd say it's a load of bullshit that they "didn't know" that the driver was exceeding his hours, and I think it's bloody disgusting they've wiped their hands of him instead of standing behind him and shouldering their side of the blame.
Shame on you, Dynes Transport Tapanui.

stevo2, Dec 17, 7:10pm
They read his timesheets so they can pay his wages, they know how many hours he worked

serf407, Dec 17, 8:32pm
Electronic logs are likely to be mandatory is the US.

If it is all connected up the enforcement people would know which drivers are exceeding their driving hours without leaving their office.

brapbrap8, Dec 17, 8:52pm
They are pushing to stop us Ag contractors being exempt from log books and work hours, and when they do it will be a huge change for our industry as working stupid hours is the normal for us.
Typical driving hours for Ag drivers is about 140hrs/week for October/November and then in April/May, but you don't really hear of any problems from it.
Health and safety laws are supposed to keep things sensible, we are meant to report when we feel tired but I have never seen anyone do that.

Hey Hendo. can you help satisfy my curiosity and please tell me what the little green lights that most all trucks appear to have these days, visible through the windscreen and often on the trailer also? I wondered if it was some kind of GPS tracking or something?

franc123, Dec 17, 10:31pm
More like dumped on him, dropped him in it, make him take full blame and the consequences and THEN wiped their hands of him. If I was a driver I know who I WOULDN'T be going to work for. Slavedriving irresponsible liability dodgers these road transport operators. Then they moan the can't get class 3,4,5 drivers at any price! Which translates into nobody will work for the industry standard pittance and be worked into the ground.

hitman45, Dec 18, 4:06am
It's e electronic RUC and rego I believe

henderson_guy, Dec 18, 4:12am
Yeah you're half right. It's EROAD/ERUC, a GPS based RUC management system. It has many benefits, GPA tracking is one of them, plus it logs how many off-road KMs are done so you don't pay for those RUCs. The best thing for us drivers is that we no longer have to make sure we have a current RUC label in the windscreen.
They were going to a set it up so the mechanics could know when scheduled servicing was due, but it never happened.

henderson_guy, Dec 18, 4:16am
It's bloody disgusting. There are still companies around that expect their drivers to push their hours somewhat, but most of them will stand behind their drivers if and when they get caught, not make them a scapegoat.

Let me tell a story 20yrs ago approx. I did a load of mesh Auckland to Petone overnight. Had a 5 hr sleep then told to load up Mt container head to Otaki where a precast panel was put on top of the container. Should have stopped some where but decided to head to Turangi . then decided to head to Stag Park Then decided to head to Hobson St apartment Auckland.Got there 7.30am . Found the crane driver up there waiting.unknown to me I was booked in to unload 7.30 am That's service.

henderson_guy, Dec 18, 5:03am
No, that's stupid.

gunsmoke4, Dec 18, 5:44am
Dynes have been doing this for years. Drivers have a receipt book in there truck, all the overtime hours gets put into there as if its a dollar amount but it is the hours over logbook time.

supernova2, Dec 18, 5:51am
Driver said he put his hours "in his back pocket' and then added them into his log book where he could.

Sooooo it just could be possible that employer didn't know. Nah forget that - they knew

2sheddies, Dec 18, 6:00am
Good stuff HG, awesome info cheers! Knew you'd be the man to ask. I've wondered about it for ages. Geez technology moves along quickly eh!

brapbrap8, Dec 18, 7:13am
It is great technology alright, we use it on the tractors too.
Especially useful if you are going out to fix a broken down tractor at the back of someones farm in the middle of the night, you can just follow the route that the driver took to get there so you don't get lost.
Also good for billing, the office can see exactly how long you were at the job so they can sort it out if someone forgets to fill out a job sheet.

henderson_guy, Dec 18, 8:04am
Apparently, the RUC rebate from off road travel covers the cost of the service, so essentially that means the company gets free GPS tracking/monitoring. Not a bad sweetener

2get1, Dec 18, 8:07am
Wow for someone so quick to get into people who exceed the limit a little to overtake you are a hypcrit. Breaching your during hours, driving tired and fatigued in a big truck what a danger to others and a menace, not to mention your already admitted lane hogging driving. Bombays to silver Dale In the right lane and you refuse to move over for faster traffic. No wonder you got run out of the trucking industry and the CVIU started getting their teeth into. What a cowboy operator and you happily, admit it. I'm the industry you are known as a bottom feeder who drives the cost of freight down by undercutting honest operators on price. Because you are driving illegally thank gos you are no longer in the industry. I wounded how many frustrated people took their live in their hands to get past you as you half asleep hogged the right lane. You probably caused needless accidents and deaths. What an idiot.

bashfulbro, Dec 18, 8:28am
In the days before log books, Auckland to Wellington and return was a regular occurrence, just grab a little nap over the wheel, if you got tired.
The difference ,before de-regulation was, that there were only a hand full of trucking firms that were allowed to cart goods long distance, if you didn`t have a Vehicle Authority for that particular type of goods, you didn`t do it.
So, it wasn`t till after de-regulation, that every man and his dog, could cart what they wanted to , wherever they wanted too, hence the fierce competition and law breaking, to outdo the competition.

elect70, Dec 18, 1:35pm
Mate was an OD carting containers , often the weight stated on the way billb senders was way out & he had to pay the fines for being overweight if caught . Employer said it was drivers responsibility . But as he said " what the f #$%^ am i supposed to do leave the f*&^%$# thing on the wharf , get them to unload some of it , yeah right then youd chew my arse for for it
