Toyota Corolla AE100, auto, 1.5L, 1991, 200k, non ABS all standard, simple straight forward car.
So, it has only recently started making a ticking noise.
Now this is when it ticks and doesn't tick:
Ticks When you start off from standstill. The ticking is rotational and so ticks slowly and faster and faster. So you come up to the lights and you are just crawling along and the ticking would appear to be one tick per revolution of tyre. You stop and no ticking.
Stops ticking, as said above, when vehicle is stationary with engine on or off. Also, going along the road at any speed, switch off engine in drive or neutral but with key on and the ticking persists.
Torn ignition off and ticking stops. Ticking starts up again with ignition on still moving along the road at 5kph or 50 kph. The only thing that differs is the speed of the ticking. As said slow right down and stop and no ticking once stopped.
I am NOT imagining anything here.
Why would it tick with engine not going but ignition on?
Who can figure this out?

Where is the ticking coming from? Not in the dashboard? I am not familiar with how the speedo/odometer operates on that specific vehicle but several I have had have a little electric motor to drive the odometer all from around that era and all had issues (hence being apart). That is all I can think of, interesting problem.

Can't be speedo cable I don't think as noise would be still there with ignition in off position.

A while back,a mate had an old Merc. it developed a tick when he was driving. right I said, you take me for a drive. It was the odo had not been reset properly. another push on the button and hey presto. ticking gone. Just saying thats all.

Oh, an electric motor. okay, I will try disconnecting the speedo and see what happens. Will report back. So, would the elect motor be ticking if that were the case?

Not out of the question either.
Good idea is to get someone else to drive while you are free to home in on it from different angles. Sit in the passengers seat, get your ear up above the dash, even sit in the back seat. Get a 3D of where the tic is coming from.

Okay, there is no speedo cable! 1991. I would have thought it had one. There is no speedo cable going through the bulkhead. What I did find was a connector going to a unit on the gearbox. I disconnected that and took it on the road. Speedo had stopped going and no ticking noise. Reconnected it and ticked as before. I assume it is the electrical unit that is attached to the gearbox. Anyone ever taken one of these out?

Yes, like I say, with the switch disconnected, the speedo stops and so does the ticking.

Maybe it's a stoned speedo?

I reckon youre onto it. My guess is that the ticking is a spark jumping a dry joint or something in the speedo. Standstill - no impulse. Moving but key switched off - no impulse. Moving with key switched on - spark making ticking noise.

Why try to derail the thread? If you don't have anything useful to say what is your point?

I would be pinpointing where exactly the noise is coming from before doing much more as pulling the dash out is a bit of a hassle. Is the odometer advancing normally? Sounds to me like there could be a stripped or stuck gear in the odometer or trip meter area?

I doubt it is going to be a spark jumping, I doubt your speedo will be running on high voltage. It's more likely to be a mechanical noise that needs power to operate it.

Thanks for the advice yes I will get someone else to drive slowly and listen outside the car as I am pretty sure the noise is not coming from the dash area. Not a problem I have encountered before. Who else has had this fault with this model of car?

Is the stereo turned off or just down when you hear the ticking? Could be picking up the ticking sound with some sort of interference & you maybe hearing it thru the speaker? Just a thought, Good luck
