We used to got up Muriwai a lot in the bro in laws Land Rover, some of the soft spots & holes were amazing, def got the reminder occasionally to keep the speed down. One early morning with headlights on we hit the brakes & stopped just short of a hole that the landcover couldn't disappeared into easily. On the way back 2 days later it was covered in with very soft sand & sure enough someone was stuck & we pulled them out

They rolled multiple times, all thrown from the vehicle. Chances are slim I think that they were not speeding.

Very sad, lots of people get caught out driving on beaches. Soft sand and freak waves can take drivers by surprise and in this case a little bit of fun turned to tragedy in seconds.

Unfortuately they under estimated the dangers of driving a four wheel drive vehicle in off road situations. I expect stupidity also paid a large part in causing this avoidable accident. Too many people just dont think before acting. They and their families have paid a very high price
