who would take a Mitsi Pajero down to the beach and speed along the edge of the sea in it.
Very sad that four guys died.

rpvr, Sep 15, 5:38am
Sad but also very stupid. There are speed limits in place, but largely ignored by many beach users.

stupidity and vehicles = short life

drog, Sep 15, 6:09am
Foot to the floor on the beach. A moment of madness.

kazbanz, Sep 15, 6:31am
Its actually fairly common.Keep in mind "speeding" is relative. The beach IS a legal road but a very unpredictable one.
Going faster than 60km/h is considered to be speeding on the beach

tamarillo, Sep 15, 6:51am
Errr I would. It's called fun. Though being a coward my version of 'speed' isn't very high.
I don't think we know how fast they were going, or whether they were speeding.

kevymtnz, Sep 15, 7:15am
many idiots on the road why would the beach be any different

mrcat1, Sep 15, 7:17am
They used to have two police officers on ER250's patrolling the beach and giving out tickets, there was a local that used to regularly do the ton on a IT490 man eater up the beach.

sr2, Sep 15, 7:28am
From the Herald "the Mitsubishi Pajero rolled, throwing three of its occupants onto the beach and trapping the fourth. all four men were ejected from the vehicle".

Very sad for all involved, condolences to the family.
I have a sinking suspicion the the inquest will reveal no one was belted in, what a terrible waste of life.

brapbrap8, Sep 15, 7:55am
I think it is safe to say they were going quick, Stuff reports that witnesses saw the vehicle travelling at high speed, before it lost control and rolled 7-8 times.
Probably going quicker than the 60km/h speed limit in place there.

motorboy2011, Sep 15, 7:57am
Speeding on a beach = dumb. No seatbelts = dumberer.

rob_man, Sep 15, 8:11am
Now the council has more backing for their permit system which adds another layer of bureaucracy in an area that was one of the last bits of free access wilderness within kooee of Auckland.

winnie15, Sep 15, 8:12am
What a terrible waste of young lives. I feel for their families.
Being young they prolly didn't know the dangers and just went to have some fun. Very tragic and heart wrenching. I feel very sad

mrcat1, Sep 15, 8:12am
Muriwai beach also has patches of very soft sand almost like quick sand and if your not aware of this, at speed and hit a patch like that could throw a vehicle out of control.

jubre, Sep 15, 8:15am
It is the last place I would take my Mitsubishi Pajero, as the salt water would corrode everything that it touches. Very expensive fun, I would say.

Of course the 3 that were thrown out of the vehicle were not wearing seat belts.

kazbanz, Sep 15, 8:40am
ive driven/ridden on that beach a fair few times.
I can rtell you that hitting a soft patch ,a buried log or even getting caught out by a rogue wave at 60km/h hurts.

tigra, Sep 15, 8:57am
I can just imagine the confrontations this will cause providing they can get somebody to Police it

tintop, Sep 15, 9:10am
True, but with the increasing pressure from population growth, greater availability of off road and neo-off road vehicles, sand dune damage, dangers to nesting birds, the bombing range - the freedoms that once were available to a few is no longer realistic.

I used to wobble along on my CB100 to go fishing too. :)

sr2, Sep 15, 9:20am
LOL; been there, done that I can vouch for the fact that it hurts.
A topside on the beach at speed is a great way to teach you to keep the weight back and the power on if the surface looks dodgy!

elect70, Sep 15, 1:02pm
See it down here , idiots trying to do hi speed donuts on the beach with inevitable results . So far no one has been killed

winnie15, Sep 15, 3:03pm
The latest update is they were foreigners ageing from 27 - 32 .

quickbuck, Sep 15, 4:09pm
Mostly NZ Residence, or here on Work Visas.

A sad waste of life. Hopefully the media attention is making people take notice. Seatbelts on a beach may seem naff, but in reality all the expensive safety features of your vehicle can not protect you if you are ejected from it. Last resort though.
Driving to the conditions would be the best thing to do. Realising the conditions on living road surfaces (beaches) is always dodgy.

Sh1t, I am starting to lecture like my old man.

Okay, go out hoon around at your peril.

Waits for the knee jerk reactions from authorites.

mrcat1, Sep 15, 5:11pm
As I said in another post, the police used to patrol it, and issue tickets.

tintop, Sep 15, 5:46pm
Yep - popped along on my bike once - there was radar there lol
