Of course, they tried to dead-heat for publicity, but it didn't work, so the McLaren/Amon car got the win. It was 1st, 2nd & 3rd for Ford.

As I understand it, they tried the dead heat, but the final result was based how far down the line up they were at the start. Doesn't that then mean that if there was a dead heat in a grid start race, that the win should go to whoever started further back down the grid?
That was one consideration - The McLaren car started 20 metres further back on the grid, so had covered more ground. Ken Miles was driving the other car, and they were side by side as they crossed the timing strip, which was situated at the start of the pits. Having crossed the strip, he backed off, hence McLaren crossed the Start/Finish line further down the track, ahead.
