i currently in the process overhauling 2l pinto 205 block to fit into mk2 escort, the motor conversion itself i believe is fairly straight, foward, using escort mounts it will bolt straight in, then just a case of fabbing exhaust and and running new fuel line ect as will be on opposit sides, the gearbox tunnel needs to be widened slightly to fit box, i have most things figured out but im interested to hear from anyone who has any tips or hints for dong this conversion, i will be using a 2 piece driveshaft from a auto escort as has same yoke as sierra, i know a guy fitted a 5 speed to 1600 xflow and the auto driveshaft was the correct lenth my question is is the pinto longer than the the 1600 xflow in which case i will need shaft shortened

What diff ratio you going to run,if the original it will be to low geared. You might get by with an escort auto diff head, they usually had higher gearing. We turbo'd one of those, that would make your pinto get up and boogie.

I did Mk 1 engine came out of Mk 3 gT cortina being wrecked so used the cortinas console with all the gauges , & box from seirra but
rebuilt the engine &slighty warmed it over mild head job & cam & headers kept origonal diff but had new 1 piece d shaft made . Great little car wished I hadnt sold it 100% reliable took it all around NI on trips .

you are dead right actually hadnt thought about that, have the 1300 in it at mo mildly worked an she is singing at 100 k, i have just purchased an auto drive shaft if im lucky he may have a diff head to go with it

clothesline2011, May 5, 1:29am
aparently hillman hunter driveshafts are the same yoke if you want to go 1 piece i am told, yep i am slightly working this engine too, probably wont turb it at this stage though

esky-tastic, May 5, 1:41am
For what it’s worth a Hillman Hunter driveshaft can be made to fit your transplant - well it did in an Angelia!
Yolk has correct spline and rear universal fits.

Edit: oops, somebody else has just posted that!

clothesline2011, May 5, 1:53am
any info is good, i was going to go the hillman way but found auto 2 piece easyer to source, im just trying to leach as much hint, tips as i can before i do the transplant, have almost everything i need just waiting on accelerator cable an will be all go

If this is intended for the road & legal usage, then I would suggest youy write it all up in to a plan & take that to a certifier ASAP before you go any further.
Could save a lot of cash & hassles.

Need a fabricated gearbox support xmember for the sierra box I had mine made out of 1'4 ' plate & bent to suit . Got it all Certified as LLVV no problem , mine also had disc brakes as origonal too . Forget turboing it too much work , easier& cheaper to do head mods & shave it good exaust .

the-lada-dude, May 5, 3:33am
The Sierra box will be over driven in 5th . so don't panic till you road test it

If your going to fiddle with the cyl / head . don't touch the intake port size ! a proper intake job requires the guides to be removed, or machined to take p- bronze substitutes, which are then tapered in diameter from where they start to show in the port to the valve stem . a 3 angle cut valve seat job and careful blending of port to first cut on seat will do for you //,,, valve stem length is critical for max valve lift ( this may be a bit beyond you to set , . but i'll let you know anyway

i have the seirra gearbox cross member, aparantly this is the 1 to use?, wont be doing anything too drastic as far as engine goes, really apreciate the input its all good stuff to know, does any one know if the pinto block is longer than the 1600 xflow? as this will determine if i need to shorten driveshaft or not,,

pfemstn, May 5, 9:09pm
don't use a 2 piece driveshaft! sump modifications will be required also, I used the alloy rs2000 sump on mine 3.9 or 3.7 ratio will work well with 5 speed!

bjmh, May 5, 9:48pm
OK so no turbo. how about a couple of 45 sidedraft webers etc . lets get this party started ha ha.

clothesline2011, May 6, 12:03am
yes will be shaving the sump a little bit, i have heard a carb from a 3l capri is a good way to go?

clothesline2011, May 6, 12:04am
i like ya thinking haha

serf407, May 6, 12:09am
Carbs on the early sierra pinto were ok but the later carbs 1987 weren't very service friendly.
so many converts done in the uk- off the shelf cross member
http://www.retro-ford.co.uk/shop/content/universal-gearbox-cross-member-drt007-0 NZ usually do a lesser cost version of this with one the Jap bike throttle bodies. https://danstengineering.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=1050 intake manifolds for the different carbs mounting point can be different or make mounting point adaptor etc.

Slightly off subject, but totally related.

One of the local garages had a giant FU when two of their mechanics met at the end of a blind fence! one was in a work vehicle, but the other was in a customers Mk5 Cortina, and as the owners have had it since new they want if fixed at any cost.
I parked it in the workshop last Fri and the way the engine sounded, I thought they should take as much as possible and run.

We were looking at the back of it today, and wondered why it had a 2.3 badge on the bootlid. Popped the bonnet and there's a bloody V6 in there. No wonder the engine didn't sound like a 4 cylinder!

I would say it's been in there since new, as they're not the sort that would bother doing a transplant.
Sort've changed my opinion of it's value by a large amount.

Anyone got or know where there's a front bumper, LF guard and park light?
Probably have to repair the front panel, but one of them would be good to have.

im pretty sure the aussie assembled mk5 was indeed factory v6

sr2, May 9, 1:11am
I thought the Aussie Cortina had the Falcon 6 and the English used the Cologne V6?
(There must be a 'tina expert lurking somewhere on this board!).

esky-tastic, May 9, 1:14am
Yep, when I first saw the 2.3 badges I thought "aha, 2.3 ohc Pinto motor" - then as you did I discovered they were a V6 2.3!

andy61, May 9, 1:22am
The MK5 were sold here new with the 2.3 V6.

lookoutas, May 9, 3:41am
The Aussie ones definitely had a Coon in them. Easily identified by the power bump in the bonnet, but I never knew there was a V6.
