My old boss had a lovely MK4(5?) wagon, with a 4L badge on it. Was an Aussie spec with a 2 litre 4 speed. He told everyone it was a 4litre v8, plenty believed him.

There's an old Army story relating to here-say. The front line sent a message back down the column saying. "Send reinforcements, we're going to advance." By the time it got to the back of the column the message was. "Send three & four pence, we're going to a dance."
Hence, the message I got about the Cortina prang was al'ta shit. The Cortina owners son was driving into the garage and a mechanic was driving out. I should've known the person telling me would have it all cocked up.

That's hilarious, on those the 4 L represents 2.0 4 cylinder and L was the spec level of the car. Other combos were obviously 6 GL which represented a 3.3 litre 6cyl GL, and 6 Ghia was a 4.1 litre Ghia.

I agree with muzz. Perhaps the one in that photo isn't a six. There was a 4 banga TE which looked just like a six. They were identified by the deeper section bumpers, but the 6 had to have a bump in the bonnet to clear the engine. And did we see any Mk IV's here? I can only recall seeing Mk V's.
Found out today that the 2.3 we have in has been owned since new. And the mileage at 26 is far dinkum. Trouble is it's only covered for 4K. Owner will pay any extra to not have it written-off, and we've suggested that he should re-value it. Already scored a brand new guard and park light off here, and probably wont find a decent front bumper, so guess I'll be winding back the clock and repairing it for a re-chrome. Just hoping the front panel pulls out OK, so it can be repaired.
But hey OP. Hope you've got enough info for your project.

try a cvt panel van they had a better stronger diff also a one peace driveshaft, try a library for haynes manuals the give you all ratios for gearboxes and diffs also the estate had stiffer rear springs and in most configurations slightly larger brake drums or discs than the saloon, british were the v4 and v6, as aus were the falcon 3.3 and 4.1 six cyl
