turn at Bulls and ended up driving to Whanganui. lol. Was talking to someone in the roading industry. a few years back they did a study on whether folk remember signs or cones more. (turns out they remember cones more ). the study was conducted on the road from Bulls to Whanganui. some unlikely data came out from the study. that was that 20% of folk on the road heading to Whanganui actually thought they were going to Taupo. they had taken the wrong turn. I wonder if they have put up better signage in the area since the study was done? Maybe a few cones might help. lol. Anyone here 'made' the wrong turn?

Yep, coming back to Christchurch from Queenstown ended up in the Haast Pass

It wasn't a wrong turn, they just didn't turn right. Tons of signage there for years. Anyway the road to Taupo via Wanganui is much more fun. And about the same time.

Unless when you get there after missing the turn the road is shut.

Its still Wanganui with no H,if you cant see all the signs in Bulls telling you where to go maybe you should visit spec savers.

Yes many years ago - just failed to make the turn and didn't realise until we hit Wanganui.
Wish I had just gone back to Bulls but opted to go the Parapara - never again!

Yes. much more interesting when there is a massive ravine only meters from the road. lol, keeps me on my toes.

Me too. Going to Nambassa on a motorbike with a girlfriend. I had a funny feeling about 10 Km before Whanganui. I wondered if it had happened to others

Do you have difficulty reading sign posts. There are plenty in the area pointing you in the right direction, that astounds me really. There's even big signs near Wanaka and again near Lake Hawea that point to West Coast ? Actually you missed 3 opportunities ( actually 4 including Luggate Hill bypass) of getting on track to Christchurch from Queenstown. namely. (1) turning right off HWY(6) onto HWY(8B) at big raised lane intersection towards Cromwell then going past Cromwell ( Big Fruit Sign) and going over the Cromwell ( Dead Man's Point )Bridge 2km from Cromwell then left turn.onto HWY(8) at the big raised lane intersection off end of Dead Man's Point Bridge, there's .heaps of signs pointing you in right direction towards and by passing Tarras and go up Lindis Pass. If Cromwell turn is missed then next chance of getting to Christchurch is . (2) Turning right just out the west end of Luggate from HWY(6) and going on over Luggate Red Bridge HWY (8A) then right again about 250mts on from bridge beyond brow of hill then on towards Tarras then turn left off HWY(8A)onto HWY(8) then follow signs. plenty of them. up through Lindis Pass then to Omarama. heaps of signage on the way ! ( there's also a by pass at base of Luggate Hill about 2km west of Luggate where there is an intersection containing raised lane islands. turn right here and double back towards the Luggate Red Bridge by turning left at end of by pass. and you'll see the bridge about 100mts away. If Luggate turn is missed the last chance to get to Christchurch is turn right off HWY(6) at the Lake Hawea River Flow Control Structure go on over it through Lake Hawea township then find your way down through Hawea Flat and then down towards Luggate Red Bridge (North End) by pass that then turn left onto HWY(8A) then on down towards Tarras then turn left off HWY (8A) onto HWY (8) on past Tarras then on up through the Lindis Pass. I'm flabbergasted how you got lost when there are numerous signs on the way, maps come in handy too . funny that. how the hell you missed so many signs had got me baffled completely, I wonder what else you missed seeing on the road . doesn't bare thinking about? A sat nav unit in your car would have told you no problems. would advise you to get one !

Years back decided to take the family to the Remarkables Rally when they had it up Crown Range road , me on the ESD 750 with eldest daughter on the back and wife ahead in the car with the other 2 sprogs, previously we'd always go CHCH Geraldine Fairlie Tekapo etc to Queenstown or Wanaka in the car for a family holiday. First time wife drives on her own to Q/town to rally she heads down main south rd from ChCh looking for the Queenstown turn off lol. got to Dunedin but managed to get to rally bout 7pm. Meantime im wondering why we hadnt caught up and passed them? ! All good in the end had a good laugh - still do :)

Seems to me the signage might be crud. so far 3 others have made the wrong turn.#.4,6,9. maybe they really do need to sort it.

Nice pictures. Ice Road Truckers. "Deadliest Roads" was a good watch.
Paraparas LATELY? Sheesh mon how recent are ya talkin boot? Used to be a kewl road but now damn near MOST of it is one lane minimal lights. Most of the good corners have MAJOR slips.

nah, only been through once on purpose & never by accident. It's easy to avoid, especially as I drive with my window down, just listen for a constant yawn, turn away & skirt around it

Sometimes you find some cool stuff when lost

No, if you ended up in Wanganui it means you made no turn in Bulls.
There is signage that you need to turn right to head to Taupo.
Not hard, Bulls is very navigate-a-bull. - .
Sorry.
