And why the hell does it say Taupo when the next major town is Taihape or even a turn-off to Marton?
If you take the Vinegar Hill road, there's a sign at a turn just over a bridge that says Taupo. People who live in Taihape must feel real unimportant when they see that.

Back to the OP.
I'll bet there are a lot of people who miss the turn-off at Bulls.
I don't mind the Para's, but the cruise-control starts felling sick before we even get there.

The Queenstown turn-off at Alexandra has got me both times I've been that way. The first time I finished up in Omakau before realising I'd got it wrong. Was concerned that I seemed to be heading in the wrong direction - main problem is that you need to go almost back to Alex before being able to cut across.
The next time was with the family on board, and I hadn't gone far before realising I'd done it again. But said to them "You all might as well see Omakau too"

I reckon many others have made that same mistake, because we were visiting some friends at the time who owned the Service Station at Millers Flat, and that night as we were crossing the road to the pub (Bloody handy) I found a hat on the road with "I've been to Omakau too" printed on the front.
I took it home and washed it, and it's probably still in a box of hats in the shed.

I'm sure all the people who miss road signs also miss all the other things going on around them, and this is why we have so many bad drivers, they are not aware of what they doing.

lookoutas, Oct 5, 6:07am
I would rather be accused of watching the road.

loud_37, Oct 5, 7:28am
Are you saying you just watch the road? What about cars coming out of side roads, oncoming cars crossing the centreline, motorbikes coming up from behind, cars braking infront without any reason.

lookoutas, Oct 5, 8:41am
How can you miss them?
They're on the road.

phalanax, Oct 5, 9:37am
Now up to 6 that made the wrong turn. #4,6,9,19,26,28.

There are giant reflective signs telling you what to do, I would have thought it was pretty self-explanatory?

Mind you that whole lower Nth Island flat region is VERY featureless and yawn-inducing, it's easy to get into a kind of mental autopilot. Especially if you've come from Wellington, Taranaki, Wairarapa or the north and have already been in the saddle for a few hours!

In her youth my wife once got it wrong going the other way; failed to turn right at Sanson and found herself unexpectedly in Palmerston North.

lookoutas, Oct 6, 5:40am
No - I've never missed the Bulls turn-off. But I can quite imagine a complete stranger missing it.

And as mentioned above - there would have been a lot who miss the Sanson turn-off.
Another is people heading our way and they miss the 8 Mile turn-off south of TeKuiti, and finish up in the Naki.

Hi XS 1100 are you a truck driver ?

ross1970, Oct 6, 8:30am
Geez aren't you just mr fantastic. I'm awarding you the "try-hard post of the week award".
You're a navigational savant.

tiny15, Oct 6, 10:15am
Meet a car load of islander boys out on the back roads near Halcombe once, they were lost. said they had come from Wellington & driving to Auckland. turns out they took the wrong turn at Sanson (well actually they didn't turn) they had driven straight across the highway in Sanson. figured Bulls was going to confuse them as well

ema1, Oct 6, 10:34am
Well living in the area and driving those roads in trucks for 25 or so years 3 or 4 times a week and cars way before that and since you know virtually every bump on the road mate. plus every sign post and advisory sign too etc. and you're just jealous and sarcasm is the lowest form of wit ( if that was what your post was meant to be) man. no need to try when it's off the back of my hand. thanks anyway Mr Sarcastic?
The thing I find trying though is how folks can't follow the many sign posts and for that matter maps, it's beyond me.
Besides there's bugger all roads too hard to "navigate" around our area if you use your brains and common sense. and use your eyes as well.

xs1100, Oct 6, 5:20pm
still a pleasant drive for a change

xs1100, Oct 6, 5:21pm
LOL no whys that

enteek, Oct 6, 8:48pm
Never lost --- just sightseeing lol.

lookoutas, Oct 6, 8:51pm
You just shot yourself in the foot ema.
Everyone should know their way around their own backyard. The problem with the examples mentioned is trapping strangers. If you were jammed up the back of a big truck, and others were stopped obscuring the signs, it would be very easy for a stranger to miss the Bulls turn-off. Same deal at Sanson.

henderson_guy, Oct 6, 11:51pm
I think you might be doomed as a truck driver, buddy. Can't find reverse gear (in a 6 speed), can't find the brake pedal, and can't read road signs. Save your money on the class 4

peacebird15, Oct 7, 11:09am
probably the wanganui hotel association that keeps replacing the big signs with smaller ones, keeps there industry alive!

lookoutas, Jan 1, 10:05am
That intersection is a mongrel in heavy traffic. What it really needs is a hook to the right in SH1 just north of Bulls, and have it join to the Wanganui road with a roundabout.
