For a cheap and small car rental, I highly recommend a Nissan Tiida. They are a very good run-about and I've driven one around the South Island (full loop).

Me too. Had a 2003 Tiilda 1.8 and it was a lot of fun driving "the Cockroach". La cucarocha!
