Sitting here watching CRC Motorsport and it's Formula E. Never heard of it but the motors sounded odd. Thought to myself what type of motors are they using. Then the penny dropped (ok I'm a bit slow but it is Sunday). They seemed to be getting along quick enough as they should as electric motors produce good torque/power but I was wondering how far the race was as battery life would be an issue. Next minute, pitstop time and they headed into the pits and swapped cars and there lies the problem with electric cars.

Sure if you are on a track your duration is limited, but on he road driving normally you can travel hundreds of kilometers in a modern electric between charges.
Tesla Model S with the larger pack has a headline range of over 400 Km, the model 3 is about 350 Km.
The majority of people the majority of time might travel 10% of that in an average day.
While of course these are headline ranges more out of marketing than real-world, even if you only get 70% of them it's a fair distance.

So what, its still a crappy and very expensive toy car, real men drive real cars.

Okay.

The last motor racing I watched, every few laps someone would have to drop out of the race to go and POUR MORE PETROL into his car's petrol tank baggy thing, which was obviously way too small for the job. How bloody ridiculous!

There has been a Tesla Model 3 test car seen that is likely to do 312 miles= 499 kilometres as a range. https://www.technobuffalo.com/2017/06/22/tesla-model-3-images/ Formula E car swap - "Next minute, pitstop time and they headed into the pits and swapped cars and there lies the 'current' problem with the 'current Formula E electric race' cars." Which is likely to be at least partially solved with the next generation of battery technology - higher storage capacity, redox batteries or ultra quick swappable batteries etc. Formula E - 28kw battery http://www.fiaformulae.com/en/news/2017/april/insight-williams-updated-battery/ (vs 75kw battery in the tesla 3 with that capacity the formula e might do the whole race without stopping but probably slower due to the increased weight.

Guess you haven't watched F1 for some time, they haven't had refuelling for some years now.

kept the weight down didn't it. i do not see formula E adding batteries though, oh wait they change the whole car. that is cool
metzeler,

And sometimes they change tires and drivers on ICE cars thats cool as well.

Real men do drive real cars, Like the Tesla Model S. one of the highest performance, most revolutionary cars made. Ever. There's really nothing you could be driving that could possibly compare.
To get the kind of performance you get from a Model S. you'll have to fork out at least a million dollars. ,. so its pretty cheap for what it is.

umm a Hellcat at 82,000 USD (thats much cheaper than a Model S )is in the same class of performance and has better ride, handling and comfort .
Also the Hellcat is not exactly a practical round town vehicle.

Fossil cars are doomed, even an idiot can see that. Emissions mandates get tighter every year, and fossil cars have more and more junk added to them to try and reduce emissions. The EU (assuming it survives) is pushing for an ICE sales ban by 2030. EV's are just getting started. The technology required to increase battery storage by a factor of three or five has already been discovered, as well as much faster charging and no chance of combustion if damaged.

so do you have a tesla, or are you still at school?
metzeler,
Jun 28, 5:41pm
And a base cheap as v8 commodore with the price difference between them spent on modifications would easy equal it in ride, handling and comfort. So what was your point again?

Quite hilarious watching all the E's suddenly diving into the pits then all popping out of the garages in new cars. Would be an absolute hoot if F1 tried the same.

No, I don't have a Tesla, but certainly not at school. Have owned a huge range of cars from 400 big block fords to V12 Jags. Hired a Tesla model S P85 for two days on a 6 week recent road trip across the states (in a 74 Gran Torino) and was by far the most amazing car I've ever driven.
Currently drive a 2014 Nissan Leaf for my daily driver (100km's a day costs about $1.60, with great performance for a japper hatch) and have a 4x4 for the weekends.
What was it you drove? with your knocking of the most amazing car of recent times . I assume you've driven one at least?

Unfortunately a lot of people can only see whats in front of their nose and also not think beyond tomorrow. EVs will go forward in leaps and bounds just like most technology does. The ICE hasn't really changed that much since its inception. Sure, they are way more powerful and reliable now, but again thats what progress is.

Its strange how many people feel threatened by EVs, its like they think someone will take their V8 away.
solarboy,
Jun 29, 10:30am
They'll have to compensate by playing a V8 sound track 'cos their EVs can't have an "Look at me, I'm driving a V8 and my special needs are filled by having a noisy exhaust so everyone hears me pass by and thinks that I'm just the man ! " obnoxious exhaust ( gases and sound emissions ).

I found the clip on you tube were Dick Johnson crashed his Falcon at Bathurst. Listening to that 351 climbing the mountain made me realise, you can't beat the sound of cubic inches and petrol.
