I can remember as a teen, on my old CB750 Honda, flying past a cop at full throttle. Kept the throttle open, until I got to some where I could disappear down some side roads. Never seen him again.

But the speeds bike reach these days is crazy. I dont know how they do it. Hell getting up to 160kph its hard to stay on with the way the wind batters the hell out of you. Im guessing all these high speed riders are ar$e up, head down, hugging the tank to stay on.

Not for me. I like my old cruisers. Too many close calls in my youth to ride like the nutters in your vid.

The urge to get out of Upper Hutt as quickly as possible is strong.

apollo11, Jun 7, 12:05am
Bloody idiots, leave those sorts of speeds for the track. the next motorcyclist those cops stop is going to get crucified.

elect70, Jun 7, 12:18am
Couldnt catch them in his comonhore ? Jeez thats moving on a bike on a road , guess no point in stopping as plod would have seized the bikes & probably had them arrested . Too fast too even get a rego # ?

kazbanz, Jun 7, 12:40am
Doncha just love the bs reporting?
Read the headline and think 300km through a town--Then truth comes out -it was on the highway--ie motorway.
The picture used suggests its on the Tuka's--it ain't at all its miles south of that.

Ha you beat me to it!

sr2, Jun 7, 1:28am
What 1000 cc production sports bikess in 1998 could do 300 kmph?

cjohnw, Jun 7, 1:34am
And you have done this?

beno, Jun 7, 1:44am
ZZR100, generation 1 hayabusa but that was 99 i think. CBR 1100 blackbird. to name a few.
riding a bike is nothing like being in an air conditioned 4 wheel box with the radio on whilst txting. It demands 100% focus and riding fast can be done safely. These bikes are designed to do these speeds and can accelerate and decelerate like a grand prix car. Road speed limits were set in the sixties when cars had crossply tyres and drum brakes and boat like handling. Yes, one error at that speed is fatal, that's why we do it when it's safe to do so.

sr2, Jun 7, 1:54am
ZZR, Bussa and Blackbird were all over 1000 cc?

beno, Jun 7, 1:59am
Hmmm! ur correct. it would be the 750 sports bikes back then i guess. but i dont think any of them came close to that speed.

kazbanz, Jun 7, 2:07am
What I'm trying to work out is exactly how the police car was able to clock the bikes at "more than 300km/h" Even given they passed a moving cop car at 100 they were pulling away at 145 km/h

tamarillo, Jun 7, 2:48am
If they saw they're Japanese 1000cc sport bikes then surely they saw well enough to get plate. The very fact they could identify bikes jars with accusation of 300kmh to me.

trade4us2, Jun 7, 3:02am
Britten V1000
Maximum speed 303 km/h

sr2, Jun 7, 3:04am
So you're suggesting that the only reason these yet to be named 1998 1000 cc bikes couldn't reach 300 km/h was the gearing? That's a brave call to make.

sr2, Jun 7, 3:05am
Yes please!

kazbanz, Jun 7, 3:28am
"might" have a couple or legal issues road riding that one

nice_lady, Jun 7, 3:35am
IF they caught you !

tigertim20, Jun 7, 4:57am
enough of a glimpse to see a shape that looks like a modern sportsbike to compare to your average jappa, and seeing a number plate are two different things.
Could have been italian / european etc too (Ducati, KTM etc) theyd look the same passing at speed to your average plod who isnt an enthusiast

emd-253, Jun 7, 5:04am
When is it "safe" to ride at those speeds on public roads with other traffic?

friendly_prawn, Jun 7, 5:16am
Im in agreeance. Once upon a time the media were supposed to tell the truth. Now its all about sales at any costs. Truth isn't really important.

hkjoe, Jun 7, 5:27am
+1. And what a bizarre comment on riders' judgement about the 'safely' of riding 'extremely' fast on a public owned and shared space.

In this article, Ricardo Sannd claims he hit 270km/h on Neilson St, Onehunga, after stealing the Tissot painting from Auckland Art Gallery in 1998, in a Honda 1100XX Super Blackbird.

I think that fella also stole a 94 Honda RC45 as well. it came up for sale around in 1998 (after recovered). Was painted matte black and frame was cut. I called about it and had sold 2 days earlier for $15k (bargain!) to a dealer in Ashburton. Now worth $50k plus.
