Could I have done things differently?

On Friday night we were driving home along Railside Ave. It was dark. The streetlights were on. The car in front of us (a purple Falcon) didn’t have its lights on. I flashed my high beam at them (not for long). The driver (a brown skinned man judging by the hand out the window several times) pulled over to the left and stopped (didn’t indicate – repeatedly). We drove past him. He tailgated then passed us on the median strip (we were doing 50 so he was probably doing about 70) and cut in front of us at the View Road round about. He stopped past the roundabout. I drove past him. He tailgated us, past us and sped off to the rail crossing and stopped just past it. I drove past him. He tailgated us again. I turned right into Corban Ave. He had to wait for a car coming down the road then sped up and tailgated us. This isn’t our normal way home but I was now heading for the Police station. He drove up beside us at the end of Corban – arm out the window and yelling at us. We didn’t look at him. I went to the Police station and filled in a complaint about him. Hopefully he’ll get a visit from a cop – sadly it probably won’t happen. I’ve rung the places for CCTV footage but no joy.
I’ve never had a cellphone (and no camera with me) so could’ve have taken photos etc.
Flashing my lights at him was an effort to be helpful. I didn’t do anything illegal or stupid in my driving. What would you have done?

Yep pretty much done the same thing except getting that much agro.
As you found out, not all drivers are reasonable ppl ;-)~

tamarillo, Oct 18, 4:15am
You did good mate.

gamefisher, Oct 18, 4:31am
Could of been a gang member best course was to the Police station.

trogedon, Oct 18, 4:54am
True ;-( I hate to think what would've happened if he'd done it to someone else who was less calm - though it scared me.

peanuts37, Oct 18, 4:55am
You did the right thing, seeing lights off a lot lately, mainly late model cars. I blame dash lit up during day on late model cars and people thinking headlights are on when it gets dark because dash is lit

marmar1, Oct 18, 5:35am
Westies, lol.

lookoutas, Oct 18, 6:34am
Been caught like that. But did appreciate it when someone let me know.

The reason my brother liked Subaru's was coz he could leave the lights on and never forget to turn them on when he left the RSA. (Back when we were allowed - sort've)

fordcrzy, Oct 18, 6:55am
the backlit dashboards are a STUPID design. all lit up in the dark. atleast in the old days the numpties might realise when they look at their instruments and cant see them and think "oh better turn my lights on" but with backlit dash they look at you like your the stupid one

Confronted head on Sunday night by an impaired driver on the wrong side of the road. Turned around, tailed them and called it in. Police visited the driver the same night. Could not prosecute for DIC because of time lapse but driver was still impaired and got a ticket for the wrong side of the road incident and "the fear of god" put into them by the police. Police rang me tonight. Really grateful to me for calling it in, so YES you did the right thing.

trogedon, Oct 18, 9:06am
Thanks. Wow, glad they didn't hit you and good job the Police acted on it.

clark20, Oct 18, 9:37am
Late model cars also have auto lights, mine are always "on"

aredwood, Oct 18, 10:56am
Only thing different would be to turn your lights off and on. As that makes the other driver think "why is that person turning their lights off and on?" Then they are more likely to realise that their headlights are off. As they are now thinking about lights.

db.price, Oct 18, 3:02pm
Yes ours has this too - I guess the question should be is why car manufacturers have the option to turn them off.

phillip.weston, Oct 18, 4:09pm
The major thing I get out of this is that you don't have a mobile phone? You've probably highlighted the main reason to have a mobile phone in this day and age - the ability to call 111 or *555 on the move is essential, along with having a camera etc.

wind.turbine, Oct 18, 5:51pm
followed a car up from hamilton one night up the motorway that had no tail lights on, was a modern car.
sat behind them with hazards going after several attempts of trying to get their attention as well as other cars going past trying to get them to stop.
Rung *555 and they said a cop was going to try look for us but never saw one.
Rung the company emergency number on the back of their car and they finally stopped after following them for about 30-45min.

They had no idea as their dash lights were going and park lights so had a small amount of light forward but the rest of the lights wouldn't go so they were pretty thankful to me for following them.

esky-tastic, Oct 18, 6:44pm
That one was probably on 'P'.

esky-tastic, Oct 18, 6:47pm
Some people can't afford cars new enough to have that feature and those cars are the older cheaper ones built in days when manufacturers believed people had enough brains to know when to turn the headlights on. (And off!)

mals69, Oct 18, 9:06pm
Has the grammar nazi made a mistake with the spelling of
roundabout ?

What has skin colour got to do with the story ?

kazbanz, Oct 18, 9:13pm
To be honest troggy Friday night around Hendo I would have just shaken my head and driven on. Sorry dude but as much as you were trying to be helpful the response you got is pretty typical. At best I might have turned my lights on and off a couple of times -but most likely not.

mrfxit, Oct 18, 9:24pm
Personally, as a long term mechanical tinkerer, I HATE the auto lights system for 1 specific reason.
They come on with the ign, causing an instant battery drain.
Why can't they be tied in with a short delay or alternator primary charge rate, so that they come on a few seconds after stabbing the starter motor or a couple of seconds after the motor starts.
Would be a lot kinder everything including the charge system & battery.

trogedon, Oct 18, 11:26pm
Stop being honest for once Kaz and try a little empathy.

elect70, Oct 19, 2:32am
Had it happen one night we were in a valiant with tow bar . We stopped & he came up behind us so mate reversed into his car & we took off . Last we saw was steam coming out of his radiator . This was the 80 s&we always sorted matters out like this . no running to plod who wouldnt be interested anyway .

stevo2, Oct 19, 4:31am
My iLoad has auto lights on and they wont come on until the engine is actually running.

trogedon, Oct 19, 6:09am
Our Pug would automatically turn the front lights on. but not the back ones.
