Cool & thats how it should be. GM seems to be in love with lights on when ign on regardless of running engine or not & then leaving them on for a while afterwards.

In my opinion you did not do the wrong thing; the behaviour of the other driver indicates some serious personal or mental issues, on their part, in my opinion. It sounds to have been pretty scary though.
As a habit, probably subconscious, I switch on my headlights if it is dark, regardless of whether the dashlights are backlit, frontlit or sideways lit.
I do see a lot of cars with no headlights on, but the bumper lights and parking (and rear) lights are on. To me, that is a conscious decision to switch on your light one click instead of two. Why do these people drive with no headlights on? Not to mention the surprising number of cars with a headlight or taillight not working.
