Poor comparison as always. The Renault had a 5 star rating and the Volvo was built before there were ratings. The Renault came off best because of that. Take a look at a Chevy Malibu from 1958 crashing into a Malibu from 2007. No contest as to who would win that one.

intrade, Oct 12, 10:34pm
whatch this its german but you can see the immages side impact only 34kph . crash tests are in a similar catagory as emission cheating its all built to meet lab conditions. You wont crash in a labarotory in the real world.
This is a non lab test video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4NFACR06Yc
its non survivable in this accident passanger Driver could survive only just . every 3th death is a tree he said.
Look past a tree not at a tree if your going to crash if you look at it you will hit the tree you move where you look.

db.price, Oct 12, 10:35pm
The indication thing for me is more muscle memory I think. When going around someone like that I just automatically indicate required or not.

db.price, Oct 12, 10:40pm
Once again what? That is a lab test ffs. The hint is all the techs standing around with computers and the crash test dummies in the car!

intrade, Oct 12, 10:45pm
Its not a ancap test He states they should add this sort of testing to there testing. and he also said ancap crash testing is only done at 34kph side inpact. not the real speed of 50kph somone running a red light T boning you.
Comes down to tha fact that if you cant drive these savety gadgets are deceptive simulating you false security . Therefore everyone should learn how to propperly drive a motor vehicle or take a train or a bus or taxi.

intrade, Oct 12, 10:51pm
Somone said to me once. You want a car with as many airbags as possible and hope that you never need them.
I disagree with that stament and i say.
You should have as many airbags as possible and Do anything you possibly can to never need them.
Hope is not going to save your live . propper driving skill however has the potential over the hope factor.

And I agree with intrade at #'s 32 and 33

Especially a half witted ad for a vehicle a while back where they were demonstrating what would and what would not happen in the vehicle with and without the stability system. My take on it is that they are telling some people that you can go out there and drive like a complete moron and when you encounter any difficulty due to the fact that you are exceeding your own and your vehicles capabilities you don't have to worry because the cars systems will kick in and save your butt . on some occasions the systems may, but on many occasions they will not.

db.price, Oct 12, 11:40pm
Absolutely. The point of safety systems is to be there if needed but should never be relied on to protect you or stop a crash - thar is what the person behind the wheel is for.

It wasn't that long ago that manufacturers didn't like advertising cars have seat belts because they thought it made the cars sound unsafe.

db.price, Oct 12, 11:42pm
Will have to take your word for that. I don't speak German.

therafter1, Oct 12, 11:53pm
I have no doubts whatsoever in regard to seat belts (apart from rear centre lap belts). Have a peek at 0.45 and 4.05 in this video as I have a suspicion that these people were not wearing seat belts, whether they would have survived or not is another matter. The truck driver was a little luckier with his unusual dismount from the vehicle, but in his case his survival is obvious.

recently did buy a Volvo but never gave a thought to the extra safety
just liked hoe the car drove, but glad about the extra safety now
hope I never have to find out

stbossman, Oct 13, 12:41am
with so many safety feature in a car these days I sometimes think people
think their car is a safety cacoon and pay less attention than they should

elect70, Oct 13, 1:32am
^^yes i reckon that is a large part of the problem . I had a woman say she didnt need to go by signs displaying safe corner speed " my car has this stability programme so if i go too fast it will automatically save me from having a crash i saw it on Tv ."

therafter1, Oct 13, 2:31am
Refer post # 34

db.price, Oct 13, 2:45am
Damn some brutal crashes there - that first one you comment on I would seriously doubt they were wearing seatbelts. Most of those seem to be Russian and many of their cars on the road are majorly poor.

db.price, Oct 13, 2:50am
Our new car has all the safety features you can shake a stick at but I am under no illusion that I still drive it like it doesn't!

I do like the adaptive cruise though - stuck in traffic outside Otaki last weekend just cruising along with the flow. No stress, car stopped as the traffic stopped - started as it started.

intrade, Oct 13, 2:58am
did you wotch the interview of richard hammond.
The engeneer told the guy exactly why he crashed .
His reply was but it never broke out while i was driving slower .
Shwoosh all the information the engeneer given him went straight over the top of his head. I was thinking i did not think that guy was such a f. kn moron but obvously he is.

richardmayes, Oct 13, 2:59am
The smaller car is a Nissan Lafesta. The bigger car is a Toyota Alphard.
Neither of these are cab-forward van designs, both have the engine room in front of the cabin like a car.

There are just limits to how much magic can be performed in a head-on smash at 100km/h +.

db.price, Oct 13, 3:13am
Though as one poster said above - that much impact and the cabin in both vans have remained remarkably intact. The fact that there were ANY survivors is a testament to how well cars are built these days

therafter1, Oct 13, 3:17am
Yes, glad I don't have to drive over there.
They are second from top in MV fatals in the chart in the attached link, and they are only beaten by another former Russian state anyway.

therafter1, Oct 13, 3:19am
He clearly demonstrated that when he tossed the car, you only have to watch the video. It was bad driving by a bad driver. He should have aborted and climbed on the brakes and hoped when he screwed his line and exit from the previous corner.

billyfieldman, Oct 13, 3:52am
Japan is lowest 9th. Safer and newer cars?

billyfieldman, Oct 13, 4:00am
Out of the 4 fatalities, 3 was from the Lafesta. The size of the Alphard had an advantage.

tamarillo, Oct 13, 4:33am
Ok, buy newer Volvo.
That test just shows newer is better. Put Volvo up against same year renault and very different.

tamarillo, Oct 13, 4:43am
Neither of which have a listed crash rating, certainly not one recognised here anyway. Maybe a better vehicle would have survived better.
