Wasn't that something to do with "local content" rules? Toyota didn't make engines in Oz so used the Holden unit.

Yeah that was an AU market oddity similar to the Pulsar mentioned above.

NZ had similar rules but used to get away with it by using NZ tyres ,batteries,brake components etc to make up the 20% or whatever required by NZ law.

Yes ,in the early 80's my Uncle who was a devout Ford man of 60 yrs and still owned a 47 jailbar and MK3 Zephyr , bought a Laser as his retirement car because of the blue oval badge. I didn't have the heart to tell him it was really a Mazda 323.

Not sure your angle on this. No deception involved as door card tells the truth. With these its badges only. They are simply the same vehicle just different label. Some supposed badge engineered like Laser/323 arent just badges and had different body panels and numerous differences.
