Interesting.
Brings the Tesla Model 3 into consideration for some buyers, myself included.

kenw1, Jun 13, 9:44pm
So what do I buy: need a Ute with at least 2.5 tonne towing capacity and 4wd, plus a flatdeck capable of taking at least 750kg.

Anyone recommend an electric for me.

Oh and nearest charging station is 25k away so need at least 150km range when towing.

exwesty, Jun 13, 9:48pm
Just bolt a generator onto the deck and a large gerry can. No problem with range then.

kenw1, Jun 13, 9:50pm
No, I need the deck clear, I MUST have that EV performance, the GP have said so.

cleanbreak, Jun 13, 9:53pm
I appreciate the need for doing this but is now the right time. Could it not be staggered over a number of years. There are so many costs rising at the same time and still increasing. It wont take much more for families to be pushdd to breaking point.

cjohnw, Jun 13, 9:55pm
So electric ain’t for you yet, but not everyone is in your position.
We are retired, no kids at home, etc, so why not?
Heck, even my mechanic son says: “buy that Tesla now Dad”.
So I think I just might.

intrade, Jun 13, 10:00pm
luise rossman had his meme car written off by a 90 year ol geriatric from retirement home and now wants to buy his lawnmower if he could a 2019 nissan sentra rental car with check engine light every time he gives it full throttle lol.
Ps its not written off the meme car is in for repairs probably for the next 5 years cause no one can get parts nor fix meme cars

gazzat22, Jun 13, 10:23pm
If this or any Government is or ever were serious about reducing emissions from motor vehicles why havent they unlike other countries instituted emission testing at WOF/COF times and even kerbside emissions testers(machines).Has any one got an answer?

sweetgurl108, Jun 13, 10:29pm
So with you on this.

gabbysnana, Jun 13, 10:59pm
All that will happen is like rents, the cost of vehicles will just go up in price. When there's no more fuel tax, how will roads be paid for?

bill1451, Jun 13, 11:29pm
You and me both, I will cueing up to buy an $80000
Tesla less $8600.00 yea right on my and my wifes measly pension, plus other savings we havent touched yet. Thegovt and the greens are so out of touch
with how ordinary jo blo just manages to exist and then another kick in the guts

bill1451, Jun 13, 11:33pm
Its as plain as the nose on your face, there will be road user charges on EV,,s just like diesels or they will hike the price of electricity, we are headed on a downward spiral, meanwhile China and the US keep polluting flat out, but lil old NZ is like the pimple onn a pumpkin.

bitsy_boffin, Jun 13, 11:35pm
Looking at the TM listings, there's a handful of Leafs that appear to be not-yet-registered imports for around the 8000 mark that would qualify I think for 3450 discount if the registration was held back to 1 July.

Thats. not a bad deal, under 5 thousand for a Leaf.

I wonder how long they will stay that price

tygertung, Jun 13, 11:36pm
Back in the 80s it could easily cost $80k for a new car, but now with inflation, $80k isn't what it used to be.

kiwigoose1, Jun 14, 12:01am
Can someone please clarify. I am on the point of purchasing a 2nd hand BMW i3 (NZ new). Will this qualify for the $3450 rebate?
Dealer said NO, applies only to imports and the BMW is a hybrid.
I actually thought it was a straight EV not a hybrid, as the petrol powered range extender does not run a petrol driven motor, only allows the battery to charge when low. If necessary, I can delay purchase until after July 1

bitsy_boffin, Jun 14, 12:06am
It will not qualify, only vehicles registered after 1 July will, as your i3 is already registered in NZ it won't qualify.

And I'm pretty sure the range extender makes it a hybrid.

bryshaw, Jun 14, 12:12am
Just get rid before the warranty expires and save huge repair costs.

lyl_guy, Jun 14, 12:15am
25% of New Zealands electricity is coal produced.
Who will pay for the extra coal for extra electrical demand these vehicales will place on our infrastructure?
The consumer!

kenw1, Jun 14, 12:25am
This would be a typical farmers ute, so we have just by the stroke of a green pen penalised all the farmers, good init.

pettal, Jun 14, 12:31am
The Clean Car Discount includes the below rebates:

New Electric Vehicle: $8,625
New Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle: $5,750
Used Electric Vehicle: $3,450
Used Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle: $2,300

vtecintegra, Jun 14, 12:33am
Only applies the first time the vehicle is registered in NZ so a second hand NZ new i3 doesn't count.

john1623, Jun 14, 2:16am
Wait now for a hike in registration for big vehicles and older vehicles.

s_nz, Jun 14, 2:26am
The extra cost will kick in 1 Jan 2022, so you have time to beat if you are due a replacement soon.

If not, there will be plug in options that fit your required specs coming in the next few years:

As an example the Ranger PHEV is expected for 2023 or 2024:

https://www.carexpert.com.au/car-news/2023-ford-ranger-plug-in-hybrid-confirmed

The reality is that climate agreements entered into multiple past governments (left and right leaning) require us to decrease our emissions. Light vehicles are a pretty low hanging fruit to get this done.

I imagine a decent portion of farmers would rather pay a few thousand more for a new ute as part of a policy that captures all of NZ, than something more direct to their industry, like a falling cap on livestock numbers at each farm.

s_nz, Jun 14, 2:34am
The 25% number is false.

As at 4:28 pm, we are sitting at 9.4%. The three coal capiable units at huntly even if running flat out in the middle of the night wouldn't get to 25%.

The current situation is quite abnormal. We have a dry year event, simulations with a natural gas shortage due to production. Typical years see far less coal burnt than we do this year. I would expect a lot more renewable energy to come online in the next decade or too to improve this situation.

Not that NZ's car fleet averages something like 13 years old. Policy was needed now in order to impact out fleet makeup over the next couple of decades.
