This is going to make it interesting

Not for long, those things will be getting long in the tooth.

I think this statement sums it up nicely. The do gooders get their way again.
I can not think of any pursuit where it was the Polices fault the offender fled and crashed into someone causing a tragic death of an innocent party.

"Our members are constantly criticised because of the outcomes of pursuits so if they're not going to get the public and or legal support then why should they do them if they're putting themselves at risk?"

It absolves police from any blame should the perps crash & kill someone as they didnt chase them . insurance co s will be upping premiums for theft

Among the scenarios that would not be justified are - wanted for burglary, a driver weaving across lanes, if police believed there was 3kg of meth in the car (which carries a maximum offence of life imprisonment), a suspected stolen vehicle and travelling at high speed. An active shooter, kidnapping and active and immediate threat is in the “maybe” section.

Next morning, "Wasn't me officer, I wasn't even there", and any evidence is sitting smoking in a forest. UK Police seem to be happy to use ramming / Pitt maneuvers though.

Often I get bored at night. So now I can steal a car put on a disguise and do some burnout right in front of the pigs as I know they will be do nothing about it Infact my friends am I will steal several cars and have races around the streets. New cars are difficult to steal so I may have to car jack from an old lady. When I have finished with what's left of the car, I will burn it out to eliminate any evidence. I think I will start with the cars of those people against police chases. So those people Please forward the make, model and registration number. I will video my destruction of your car and email to you. I hope you enjoy watching just as much as I enjoy wrecking it. I look forward to hearing from you.
When I get drunk I will drive home. Again if the pigs try stop me I will do a runner then report my car stolen.

Time to sort out the current method of changing ownership of vehicles then, even doing it OTC & getting a physical plastic printout is not a guarantee that you name is not in the computer as the owner, untill the computer sorts it out 100%

gazzat22, Dec 20, 5:58pm
Most of the blame IMO is on the news media both printed and TV. How often are the headlines 'Teenager killed in Police Pursuit' or similar when it should be something like "Car thief crashed car and is killed ".

nice_lady, Dec 20, 7:00pm
You got it completely backwards. The powers that be will soon remove all legalisation which in any way under any circumstances makes a person found to have contravened any of these Acts to be a criminal. Voila ! All crime will immediately cease because NO act will be considered criminal. Simple fix eh. NO overcrowded prisons any more. NO more convictions for criminal acts. We can shut down the courts and save HEAPS of money !

When you look at police chases in America on wide open highways with everyone going in the same direction, until they reach an intersection, I don't blame the NZ police for not wanting to get involved in chases. The thought of having to chase someone knowing they are just a hairs breath away from having a serious accident, considering NZ conditions, must feel like a no win situation for police. Then there must be the cops that are boyracers at heart, who are just itching for the opportunity to show us what they can do behind the wheel.

bill1451, Dec 20, 7:35pm
And how much defensive driver training do police trainees get anyway, as you say a lot of them are a hairsbreadth away from being a boy racer themselves, sounds like a lose lose all round, Next PHASE is total anarchy, Maybe Mad max was right.

alowishes, Dec 20, 7:40pm
Well put!

alowishes, Dec 20, 7:42pm
And you will never ever crash.

alowishes, Dec 20, 7:46pm
Well that’s what the dunderheads go for, them and older Commodores and Skylines too.

gazzat22, Dec 20, 8:07pm
It would be interesting if the press in other countries use the same sensationalistic headlines eg Australia/UK/USA and what rules and regulations the police there have to follow or are the news media more mature in other countries than we have here?

marte, Dec 20, 8:27pm
It's not that hard to indicate, slow & pull over & stop safely when you see red & blue flashing lights behind you.
There's no excuses to not to really.

gazzat22, Dec 20, 8:36pm
Unless you dont have a licence, have passengers when you shouldnt, are drunk or drug affected, car is stolen etc.The list goes on but those who do kill themselves trying to evade the police generally fall into one of those categories.Suicide by stupidity.Sadly at times another innocent person also is killed or severely injured.

amasser, Dec 20, 8:44pm
Going that way with tenants not being liable for damage to rental properties. Expect higher insurance premiums. Laws are only relevant to law-abiding people but they should be punished more?

stevo2, Dec 20, 8:53pm
Need tougher penalties for those that are caught doing a runner. Six months loss of license doesn't cut it, especially since they didn't have one to start with.

tweake, Dec 20, 9:02pm
i don't have an issue with them being darwin award winners.
tho taking out innocent bystanders is a bit rough, tho whats the odds they will crash into someone even when not being chased.

nice_lady, Dec 20, 9:31pm
100%. Maybe 10 years hard labor. Minimum.
Fat chance. PC govt.

gazzat22, Dec 20, 9:37pm
Unfortunately a lot of them seem to take out innocent bystanders or other motorists or trees or powerpoles or parked cars when not being chased. Its hardly"a bit rough"when its one of yours!

gunna-1, Dec 20, 9:38pm
Coupled with the idiotic response of #32 is why i gave up driveing alltogether, dunderheads eh? we are sick to death of getting stopped in these cars as are people in clapped out honda civics in poorer areas, i dont know about them, but i dont give a rats ass if #32 steels a 500$ commy of me, and if he dose, what good is chaseing him at open road speeds through town, none, you clowns only want blood and your reality tv fix, and are threatening to do the job yourselfs if we dont do it, time to get a life, and not worry about 500$ commies and clapped out civics, who cares?.

nice_lady, Dec 20, 9:41pm
Maybe because it's not just stolen cars they chase and maybe there's a good possibility that if the cars stolen it's being driven idiotically for a start and perhaps other crimes are or have been committed by the occupants?
