So the airline tourist industry is stalled so why

Is fuel not coming down in price considering the trillions of litres of fuel not being used ?

mechnificent, Jan 1, 11:50pm
Well at least it's cutting the pollution by them. I'm happy.

tweake, Jan 1, 11:52pm
the problem is because aviation fuel is not being used, they are not making any, but still have most of the overhead costs.
NZ refinery is going bust and looking to scrap marsden refinery and turn it into storage depot.

elect70, Jan 2, 1:25am
Most likely other fuels to rise to maintain margins .So get out & use more

nice_lady, Jan 2, 3:55am
Convert your diesel engines to run on JetA1 and save the industry ?

m16d, Jan 2, 4:05am
No conversion needed.

tweake, Jan 2, 4:23am
it basically is diesel without certain additives. they will be making diesel instead of jeta1 and cracking it into petrol etc as much as possible.

i suspect the amount of diesel used in nz is absolutely nothing compared to the amount of jet fuel thats normally used.

the issue is really about volume of sales. when the biggest customer stops buying most bushiness fold.

Marsden closing has nothing to do with covid.

tweake, Jan 2, 5:07am
got any info on that?
as thats not whats in the media.

3tomany, Jan 2, 5:10am
Marsden partially closed before we even knew about covid. The meeting to decide it's fate was late last summer before covid even became a problem. The final decision was delayed until winter as covid put a spanner in the works however closure has been imminent for a while.

3tomany, Jan 2, 5:27am
All the old paper articles have been sent behind a paywall but this one give an idea of the thinking. I was told of the plan for it to become a tank farm early last summer by an employee. https://www.nzherald.co.nz/northern-advocate/news/future-of-northlands-marsden-pt-oil-refinery-uncertain-as-company-does-strategic-review/YVRZPLKRPS6ZGFYXLFXQJ5Z2TU/

tweake, Jan 2, 6:27am
covid was well and truly rampant by then.
they have been looking at a tank farm because their main business is loosing money.
if i remember right they did a big upgrade a few years before that. not the sort of thing companies usually do if they are going to scrap it.

3tomany, Jan 2, 6:31am
That was not a major upgrade but rather a patch up to keep it going a bit longer. They have been importing refined fuel there for a long time already. The plant has been reduced capacity since long before covid as fuel is cheaper from singapore. Covid is not helping but this plant was going to close regardless.

3tomany, Jan 2, 6:36am
The review was announced in april. Talk up here started long before that that closure was the prefered option. https://www.nzx.com/announcements/351663

Aircraft do not use automotive fuel.

marte, Jan 2, 8:18am
NPD 100 octane went from NZ$2.40+ pre coviid, to $2.00 early Covid,
Then $1.98 just before Christmas as a promotion & now is $2.21

socram, Jan 2, 8:24am
Jet aircraft run on kerosene (similar to diesel) and half the cost of gasoline to produce - except when you buy it at Mitre 10 in a bottle.

mechnificent, Jan 2, 8:40am
Yup. the tank farm has been in the plans for a long time. before covid.

martin11, Jan 2, 10:02pm
A lot of smaller aircraft can use Mogas .

tygertung, Jan 2, 11:41pm
Maybe some small ultralight catagory or some kind of sport light aircraft which are not using lycoming or continental engines, but most light aircraft do, so there wouldn't be much difference in demand.

serf407, Jan 3, 12:13am

sw20, Jan 3, 12:36am
$2.016 at NPD Port Hills Road. Pak n Save has 95 at 1.799 and you get an extra 10c off if you buy something.

martin11, Jan 3, 1:42am
A lot of Homebuilt aircraft with Continental or Lycoming motors are approved to run Mogas .

framtech, Jan 3, 1:47am
No shit, depends what you refine the crude into, the oil companies world wide will be selling a lot less oil (Trillions) and I would suggest they are holding the price up waiting till this covid vaccine is sorted, they need to lower the price to save economies but no , the one world control freaks are still in control of us all. once again, weak governments and bent bureaucrats world wide.
BTW 100 oct fuel is still sold for piston aircraft engines.

nice_lady, Jan 3, 1:58am
Yes of course it's Avgas 100 LL, (low lead) and it's illegal to use on your road card. And it'll screw your Catalytic Converter anyway. I know someone who runs his 350 Chev powered Jet boat on it tho. Reckons it loves it.
