Really? Is 3 grand, tax deductible, a make or break on 60 grand Ute?
Let’s bring back the Trekka.

There must be a hundred new HiLux's in the Thames storage yard.
Something is happening.

msigg, Jun 18, 3:23am
Good on them, now or never, there will be a wait for some and supply chains will be stretched, good low kM second hand prices will go up a bit too. All good in love and war. Go the Ranger.

muppet_slayer, Jun 18, 3:25am
That stuff article just reads as one big advertisement for the top ute dealers.

gusthe1, Jun 18, 3:26am
Might have something to do with the Field day offers up for grabs too

With all the talk of record new vehicle sales across all categories (when covid-issues can allow supply) lately, and now the farmers scrambling to get utes, surely there must now be a HUGE amount of used vehicles around, including ex rentals with the lack of tourists etc etc.

tweake, Jun 18, 3:40am
record sales, but long delivery times.
i'm told 2nd hand prices are pretty high at the moment.

Farmers flock to buy utes, since a good percentage of them will be cow cockys, shouldnt that be "farmers herd to buy utes"

cjohnw, Jun 18, 4:15am
Good point!
I heard that cow cockies moooove with the times, but that could be udderly wrong!

Typical bloody sheep mentality in this country, lets rush in and buy everything up. Supply of brand new vehicles is hardly guaranteed ar any time, especially not at the moment or for the foreseeable future. Importers and distributors are going to look pretty stupid if they cannot supply anything at all by the end of the year, there was already huge delays on accessories for instance before all this commo greenie taxation rubbish got announced.

intrade, Jun 18, 5:45am
the media are good at shilling stuff

bryshaw, Jun 18, 5:45am
I read Ford is in real financial trouble so if I was buying a ute I would go Toyota.

franc123, Jun 18, 5:58am
The security of Ranger supply is critical for Ford Australia and NZ, anything that affects that could put their ongoing presence in this country in real jeopardy.

lakeview3, Jun 18, 6:00am
Wow doing it tough huh?

tamarillo, Jun 18, 6:26am
Tea leaves need refreshing

aredwood, Jun 18, 10:10am
When does the contract with Mazda to supply the BT50 end?

gph1961, Jun 18, 3:05pm
flocking right

gph1961, Jun 18, 3:06pm
milking it for all its worth

clangie, Jun 18, 4:35pm
thats what i thought, although the tax is not ideal-it adds more to ya business expenses so ya would pay less tax on income earned.
i would say a good 95% of new utes sold are run through a business so its not actually costing anyone anything-although i still hate labour for trying to tax every-damn-thing

gblack, Jun 18, 5:28pm
Saw some comment that some Ford Ranger models would not even be hit with the tax.

Just looked it up; the 2.2-litre four-cylinder biturbo emits a category best 177g/km.

Which I think puts it into the neutral zone; no rebate or extra fees.

So no reason to rush out and buy something like that.

I could imagine though bunch of local car company execs hitting up the parent companies trying to get supply of low emission utes. Just needs one company to bring out a ute with drivetrain borrowed from a hybrid and they should sell like hotcakes

The reality is that whether a farmer pays $40,000 or $50,000, they first of all claim back the GST.

Secondly, they get 30% depreciation allowance on the residual amount annually, if it is 100% business use and if they had half a brain, (and most have a decent brain), they'd keep a family car for private use.

Those who cannot claim the costs back are the only ones really hit.
