Wouldn't do to get a bit of brake dust on their soft pink fingers, or risk messing up their designer facial fur in the process. Doubtful most of these little pretty boys would have enough strength to undo the nuts either.

I discovered that the North Shore has a damn fine engine reco place.

LMAOROF

AWESOME . . ;-)

tygertung, Mar 29, 6:03am
These days I would say that if the car breaks down, you probably can't fix it on the side of the road. Not like the old days when you could just adjust the points or something.

ronaldo8, Mar 29, 6:25am
Anzor Albany. But yeah, all roads eventually lead to freaking Penrose

mk3zephyr, Mar 29, 6:33am
Penrose or East Tamaki, .Anzor are really expensive.

bill1451, Mar 29, 7:07am
Well for sure they should know how to change a wheel, check the fluid, snowflakes, more like watered down cat pee.

budgel, Mar 29, 7:41am
They sure as hell wont be moving there for the climate! ;-)

sr2, Mar 29, 7:59am
Its got two, North Shore Engine Reconditioners and Gleye & Parlane

2sheddies, Mar 29, 8:06am
I picked the former, and it was a most excellent experience. Wayne knows his sh*t. Can't beat those who've been in the game that long.

tygertung, Mar 29, 9:01am
Why haven't they been taught? That's what I'd like to know.

apollo11, Mar 29, 9:02am
Because they probably aren't interested.

socram, Mar 29, 9:19am
No one doubts that there are SOME youngsters, competent, keen, willing and able to fix stuff and learn, but we are on about the majority today.

This isn't bagging the younger generation, this is a generational shift, so #18 is only partly right.

If our experience is anything to go by, it isn't the older generation not wanting to pass on their knowledge, it is usually that the younger generation aren't interested in learning. I have never found anyone yet who has refused to help a son (or daughter).

Not having a workshop or shed or even a decent garage, just doesn't make it easy.

Ever carried out a relatively minor practical project and noted the number of tools required? I remember dad doing just that, when he made a tissue box holder and mounted it in the kitchen for mum!

Standing joke in our house is - can you 'just' do.

tygertung, Mar 29, 10:52am
The children are not being trained correctly if they are unable to do things. There is nothing physically different from one generation to the next, so it is only a social thing. If the children are being socialised not do change tyres, they won't change them.

But I think that's all rubbish, there is still heaps of young people doing interesting stuff. Probably more than previous generations. Or maybe just the same proportion.

annie17111, Mar 29, 6:31pm
My 12 yr old knows how to change a tyre, he's been out helping dad change tyres since he could walk.
My 19 yr old is always mucking around with his car and changing something. He googles it and then has a go. His dad is a mechanic but never showed him how to do anything.
I can't imagine not having a gargage full of tools.

hotelcarpet, Mar 29, 6:32pm
Sounds like OP is an indoors secretive mechanic perhaps a chitty chity bang bang build is looming hahahahah

paul861, Mar 29, 6:38pm
crikey, my kids can change and fix wheels quicker than a tyre shop, but i do provide a skid pad

bill1451, Mar 30, 1:00am
Well as they say "where theres smoke theres hope"

joanie32, Mar 30, 1:50am
Things must be very different around these parts.

One SIL has double garage and is a keen woodworker, othe SIL has off roaders and always working on one or two.

Same with all their mates, they are constantly helping each other out with parts, tools or labour.

In my group of friends, we all have a hobby car, motorcycle or tractor etc, and we tend to visit each other’s sheds more than each other’s houses.

I’m pleased to say the kiwi shed is alive and well in this part of the Waikato.

poppy62, Mar 30, 2:05am
Just you wait, till the Internet gets to the Waikato!

gph1961, Mar 30, 3:04am
your right pottering isnt for motoring
what about mucking around?
TIA

tygertung, Mar 30, 3:44am
Down in Christchurch you can't move but for people doing all kinds of DIY. You are pretty much tripping over them.

It must just be an Auckland thing where everyone is just sitting around all day. Or maybe just parts of Auckland.

apollo11, Mar 30, 4:10am
You really need to stop wandering through other peoples' sheds and garages you know.

trogedon, Mar 30, 8:25am
"Auckland thing where everyone is just sitting around all day." - in traffic jams.

ronaldo8, Mar 30, 9:53pm
Or maybe just the imaginations of some people, who think they know what other people do and don't do with their time. Regardless of where they are from.
