Just failed a WOF on worn brake pads and shoes! Purchased new shoes and pads and went to fit and there is almost NO WEAR on the old ones! What recourse do I have? Feel absolutely ripped of! Only plus is he did not get the work or parts!

yea did you check both front and rear? i know this can be the case. A sales rep told me he does not get why they run radio-Adds that they only check wof.able items. I said its probably to say we dont try and get extra work like others.

Normal first course of action would be to actually check the linings first before purchasing new ones.

Go back and try to pass again, with the old ones cleaned up? If you pass, report the mechanic to an appropriate authority. Good luck!

Just keep the old ones for next WOF fail, put the old ones back in.

Why? I would be trusting the mechanic who told me the old ones were worn.

So that this sort of thing does not happen in the first place.

There is no way they could have done a proper inspection of the brake linings. I would not trust them.

What did the reject sheet actually say? You can't see brake shoes to fail them on wear but only on performance. Is there a warning light on the dash giving a false reading?

VTNZ did that to me once, went home, husband took it apart and checked, Zero wear, put it back together, took car back for recheck himself, and oh look, it passed.

Again, what does the WOF sheet actually say because they can not see shoe lining wear. You can have new pads and shoes and yet poor performance so send through details on WOF sheet and make and model.

23. Brake friction material (where visible without removing vehicle components) (Note 2) is:
a) worn below manufacturer’s specifications, or
b) separating from the brake pad backing plate or brake shoe, or
c) contaminated by brake fluid, oil or grease.
End of the day no 4 disc pads will EVER wear the same and the thinnest IS the weak link that when you NEED to stop can overheat the resin bonding and become steel on steel.
So FAIL.
And we await the make year and model to acess the MANUFACTERERS minimum thickness.

Have you spoken to the WOF inspector about it? You could ask another inspector for his opinion. Have the pads been removed for replacement?

Factory 17 millimetre so 50%=8.5 75%= 4.25 Most manufacturers ONLY allow 70% (And utes are hard on brakes) Reality is Inspector is only doing his/her job in failing

How do I upload photos so people can see for themselves?

I once was failed by vtnz because my airbag indicator light wasn't working - I was really worried about the expense of getting something like that fixed until the toyota repair centre told me that my car didn't have an airbag indicator light !

Just taken off the back drums and shoes have minimal wear 2-4mm wear not 2-4mm left no oil leaks. Saw him remove inspection grommet on rear brakes and look inat inspection! Is this normal?
I have had the same issue with VTNZ. They said I needed a letter from who put in the brake pads with a letter head on to pass. I decided just to get the workshop to do my WOFS from now on.

No way

Presumably it was a local garage that you dealt with.I would go to a testing station, show them the WOF check sheet and see what they say. They probably wont charge you and if its not correct will have a "talk" to the garage.

[/quote.Have you not been to a testing station lately. Why would you ask for opinion when as a rule testing stations tend to get bagged anyway. Go speak to the owner/manager of the garage and sort it.

Yes I went to a testing Station about 2 months ago for a WOF and found as I have in the past they go by the book and dont try to sell you something you dont need unlike some garages. And FYI i have never "Bagged" a Testing Station. The poster indicated fairly clearly they did not wish to go back to the place that failed their car so a Testing station to me is the logical and independent place to go to.!

It's actually a requirement that they do so where inspection ports are fitted.

Now maybe you understand my anger! One car failed because of faded lenses-acceptable and fixed. One car stolen and abused to hell, told $100 to tow then charged $500! My truck failed wof pads and shoes "worn" when I went to replace them after purchasing new shoes and pads($200) Shoes and pads are more than 50% of the new ones! Yes I am pissed!
