Hyundai and partners trialing hydrogen powered rubbish truck in South Korea.

If is works out - 900 more hydrogen trucks will be put on the job.

I don't know how it went, but about fifteen years ago California was setting up quite an extensive hydrogen refueling network. It just seemed to fizzle out of the news though.

mechnificent, Jan 5, 5:03am
Oh. It's still there I see. Hasn't blown up yet.

apollo11, Jan 5, 5:19am
Hydrogen tanks produce a very satisfying explosion. Petrol is super safe in comparison.

toenail, Jan 6, 12:17am
all that money put into research for solid state batteries and hydrogen should be redirected to teleportation. car manufacturers need to think outside the square or become another kodak.

mechnificent, Jan 6, 12:22am
Yeah hydrogen is fun to play with. When the boys were homeschooling I explained about splitting water and one of them reckoned he was going to have a go at one of them "hydrogen bombs". Lol. So we split water and made a few bombs. Excellent fun. and educational too.

apollo11, Jan 6, 12:38am
You seen that movie where the people were teleported, and while it appeared instantaneous to the viewer, it was thousands of years stuck in limbo for them?

tygertung, Jan 6, 12:44am
Hydrogen tends to float away as it is lighter than air.

Toyota chief says there is too much hype for EVS.

https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1130688_toyota-still-cautious-on-evs-says-there-s-too-much-hype

Toyota still hope to make some pure evs before mid-decade or is that mid-century?

strobo, Dec 19, 7:48am
The headlining says it all .Yes that is true one day in the next decade they will realize the error of their way.All the hype is based on the" Bandwagon Philosophy" ie is a fallacy based on the assumption that the opinion of the majority is always valid: that is, everyone believes it, so you should too. It is also be called an appeal to popularity, the authority of the many.

bill1451, Dec 19, 7:56am
And how right he is, Toyota is fairly conservative in their designs. Anyway as far as EV,s go, model T was the first mass produced car then IMHO we are about the Model A stage with EV,s. Hydrogen cell power has a long way to go in development, and lets face it battery technology has not advanced far considering electric cars have been around in some shape or form for about 100 years albeit in very limited numbers. my 10c worth.

lyl_guy, Dec 20, 1:44am
Cancer rates will go up as sitting inside an EV is to sitting inside an electric motor!

kandjaja, Dec 20, 2:25am
Got a link there champ?.

kazbanz, Dec 20, 2:48am
I totally get that a viable alternative to ICE cars is needed. What I don't get is that the environmental cost of electric is so much higher currently

harm_less, Dec 20, 2:58am
You may want to reconsider that claim. As Li-Ion battery prices now near $100/kWh the price of EVs will reach parity with ICE vehicles. At that point the decision between buying an electric car vs. a petrol powered one becomes a no brainer considering the far lower running costs of EVs. https://about.bnef.com/blog/battery-pack-prices-cited-below-100-kwh-for-the-first-time-in-2020-while-market-average-sits-at-137-kwh/ There has been much comment about Toyota's denial of the future of EVs and in doing so they are definitely 'swimming against the tide' in that respect. https://electrek.co/2020/12/17/toyota-ceo-lack-of-vision-spreads-ev-misinformation-spells-the-end/

serf407, Dec 20, 3:36am
That could change quite quickly if non-toxic ultracapacitors can be developed that provide effective driving ranges in evs.
The Estonian ultracapacitor guy says 3 to 5 years before their is a non-toxic lower environmental footprint ev ultracapacitor with a commuter type range. https://interestingengineering.com/could-ultracapacitors-replace-batteries-in-future-electric-vehicles https://interestingengineering.com/could-ultracapacitors-replace-batteries-in-future-electric-vehicles (this article from June 2020 is not correct on every point trying being made) Already small forklifts etc running on super/ultra capacitors https://youtu.be/Rm69TFxicfM 2021 Toyota possible launch of a solid state battery ev

tony9, Dec 20, 3:36am
What would Toyota know about it? A 2 bit niche Jap maker with no track record of industry success.

curlcrown, Dec 20, 4:04am
He makes a lot of points which a very obvious but no one wants to mention. Lack of infrostucture and having to burn coal and gass to generate the electrisity is convenaintly not mentioned by the polititions and scientests. Hopefully the will listen.

ronaldo8, Dec 20, 7:05am
Twaddle, you get bathed in more EM radiation walking to your letterbox and back on a sunny day.

ronaldo8, Dec 20, 7:07am
Cost upfront is higher, cost over the life of the vehicle is much lower.

bitsy_boffin, Dec 20, 8:19am
Putting aside the fact that electricity generation can be from renewable sources, cheaper than coal. putting aside the fact that in NZ we have a majority of our power from renewable sources, putting aside that with the price drops in solar that large scale solar generation is feasible combined with large scale battery installations or pumped hydro storage. putting aside all that and assuming for arguments sake that coal and gas generation is and continues to be significant into the distant future, it is still far easier cheaper and more effective to deal with the environmental effects of a handful of power stations than at the exhaust pipes of millions of vehicles burning fossil fuels.

Love the salt.

Anyone else worked at a lithium mine and seen how "green" they are?

apollo11, Dec 20, 10:31am
Lithium 'mines' are basically evaporation ponds in the desert. I'd be much more concerned about the mining for rare earth metals, or cobalt mining.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/jamesellsmoor/2019/06/10/electric-vehicles-are-driving-demand-for-lithium-with-environmental-consequences/?sh=9d8139c62e2b But if you want to see wholesale destruction of habitat look at tar sands mining:

Na an ice car is way cheaper to own and run at present and that will not change until the batteries halve in price.
