Could also build around 3000 state houses @$800K per 4 bedroom home for the above total too.

Chuck in a Tirau bypass.

It makes the rail sound like good value than. It'd be nice to have more trucks off the road.

That work up through Dome valley and beyond is impressive. Keep those Orkland holiday makers happy.
tweake,
Jan 4, 1:47am
they are not actually doing a whole lot. dome, looks to be back on, but its right back to the start. that will be decades before thats done.
the only other one is whangerai, widen up the existing road, cheap bandaid. will be interesting to see how they tackle oakly as thats all swamp.
the rest is just minor bits they should have done 30 years ago (in fact ww and wfd bypasses where on the plans 30 years ago).
what they are not doing is Brynderwyn bypass which is fairly critical. also no plans to do the bit between the main 4 lanes upgrades. the old problem of making good roads either side means they can get to the choke point faster and tend to crash a whole lot more.
all those roads are part of the top most dangerous highways in nz. if it was ever done for "safety" then those roads would have been done many decades ago.

Otaki to Levin 4 lanes?
mechnificent,
Jan 4, 1:52am
They've moved a lot of dirt for nothing then.
And , A Brynderwyn tunnel would be nice and cool on a hot day. But we can't have everything.

Maungamuka they can leave. we quite like the barrier.
justinian1,
Jan 4, 2:02am
Last I heard they had gone back to doing it as 4 lanes.
tweake,
Jan 4, 2:13am
thats laughable. the cost would be horrendous and entrance right where you don't want it. thats why the best option is bypass out the the west. that way there is some decent land you they can build on.

It is going to be lot better to put in some rail, rather than going back to the future with more motorways.

The trouble with Rail when it was going 45 years ago was all of the handling involved on moving anything and the time that it took fot the product to be moved . Hell of a lot more organization and movement .

I was contracting to Transit Nz (and later NZTA) and worked on the design and consultation processes for the major SH1 bypasses north of Auckland including Warkworth, Wellsford and Puhoi etc for many, many years. Helen Clarke binned it, then John Key resurrected it and it was well progressed during those years, then The Greens and Julie Anne Genter crippled it. Sometimes its not just about what is common sense eh? I actually still have a lot of the topo plans stored on my computer.

Don;t have a problem with the spend, The issue I have is the construction time and quality, The number of road works I past through at 30kph only to see a couple of machines and 5 workers - working in peak hours and no one at night. These jobs need government clerk of works management and 10,000 dollar penalty for every day over completion time, there should be 100 machines and 400 workers, working 24/7 , with roads open to 80kph in peak hours. Its just utter bullshit how the private constructors get away with roadworks these days and the quality is crap. and those cheese cutter single lane roads like the napier/hastings expressway is shit too.

Whatever happens you can guarantee that since it's politicians arranging it they won't do what's best for the country they'll do what's politically expedient. That's what they always do.

Yeah but a bit of shade on a hot day would be nice. nice cool tunnel. It'd be mint.

If they can make a waterview for a few Orklanders, then can make one us up here. We have further to go.

And earlier I was thinking of Puhoi I just read. not Dome valley. Puhoi. A lot of earth moved there.yessir.
tweake,

exactly. anything north of auckland is ignored. no one wants to put their neck out and do big projects. money is spent elsewhere where there is no traffic. some fantastic roads down south, no traffic on them tho.

My roads getting sealed, and very nice job too. after thirty years and more of promises mind.
tweake,

one of the issues for the contractors is getting paid. so they are off doing profitable work while they wait to get paid for the public work.
tweake,
Jan 4, 3:57am
a lot more around here to, but its all local council. thats all due to the big increase in housing.
tweake,
Jan 4, 3:59am
fairly sizeable but afaik dome valley will be a lot more. some very big cut/fill do be done.

Warkworth to Wellsford/ Te Hana estimate $1.7 billion to $2.1 billion
I agree, but they've lowered the drawbridge for the holiday season!
