The pleasure of owning an EV

Depending on the model of Highlander it may be less safe than any EV currently available in NZ. All EVs carry 5 star safety ratings: https://rightcar.govt.nz/vehicle-search-results?q=7|89|| Highlanders run from 5 to just 3: https://rightcar.govt.nz/vehicle-search-results?q=1|40||2|1291||&d=Toyota%20HIGHLANDER

towing is pretty crap as it absolutely gobbles the power.
ev's are not good with load. ev's are ok as cars because they have almost no load.

randsdyson, Jun 16, 3:57am
I like the idea of getting in my car, turn the key to start it, and I am gone, no having to unplug it from a charger, no worry about running out of fuel. I really appreciate the ease in which I can use my old fossil fuel car.

ascotbks, Jun 16, 4:03am
mines 3 years old and newest model available however none available and new model also unavailable. toyota keeps saying its almost here but as i understnd it they cant get them. made in usa and just not enougt being made due to covid. same as a lot of new cars and as for evs. if the govt said they would pay for a new ev for everyone the wait time would probably be 10 years minimum.

apollo11, Jun 16, 4:12am
Ev's need to get a lot better before they will suit everyone, or even most. Governments are going to have to use common sense around the phasing out of ICE'd cars, or it will all turn into a circus pretty quickly. The same goes for the infrastructure.

stevo2, Jun 16, 4:12am
Cheers but I'll wait for the movie

ascotbks, Jun 16, 4:14am
yes, imagine if everyone had an EV in inner wellington. power cords all over footpaths at night in most inner city streets where there is no garages. you come home. find park outside your own home and in wellington thats a joke to start with. but if lucky enought go inside grab power cord and take outside and plug in and hope no pedestrian is no annoyed enough to kick cord and break connection then get up in morning go out disconect cord bring inside and then take off all probably in a howling gale with rain teaming down. luckily enough though in wellington if ev not charged you can always jump on a bike and use all the unused bike lanes the council has spent millions on

This story is set in 2030? Is this what we have to look forward to.

buyit59, Jun 16, 6:27am
Harmless @ post 26 . If you believe the Rightcar site then there are lots of 3 or 4 star safety rated EV's. including your Leaf . But don't worry according to RightCar every vehicle looses stars as they age so in time a 5 star Ancap will become a 2 or 3 star 'used' vehicle . I think the site is one of the most misleading sites that could have ever received government funding . The same with the hybrid petrol usage. a man had a V6 Commodore that is better on fuel Nelson to Christchurch than his Outlander PHEV but worse in the city. however RightCar show a misleading fuel based on a certain amount of battery usage. plucked from the sky perhaps ?

Iollol the hatred for EVs where someone has to make up a story.

Don't panic bullshiter I'm sure you'll be able to repower your old car with an electric motor when fossils are outlawed.

loose.unit8, Jun 16, 7:30pm
I think it's quite entertaining as to how unrealistic it is. Do you think that's what an anti-EV person actually thinks happens?

loose.unit8, Jun 16, 7:49pm
No. By 2030 solid state batteries will be common.

Prototype solid state batteries have already demonstrated an 800km range with the ability to be recharged 1000 times with a volume half that of the current Li-ion batteries. The first production cars with this tech is looking at coming out next year.

By 2030 replacing the whole pack or super charging (either one in a few minutes) will likely also have been worked out.

s_nz, Jun 16, 8:03pm
Really I am not sure. Seems likely that somebody who follows a motoring message bored would be aware of the range of most modern EV's (the ones you would take on a road trip at least) far exceeds that of the 24kWh leaf's of 2011 - 2016.

alowishes, Jun 16, 8:25pm
Wouldn’t mind one of those V8 powered Teslas!

harm_less, Jun 16, 8:43pm
With that sort of mindset perhaps a team of 8 horses pulling your engine-less ICE car would appeal.

bitsy_boffin, Jun 16, 9:23pm
Some people are just inexplicably, irrationally, so vehmently opposed to EVs that you can't tell them how they are wrong, either they won't believe it or they simply switch off and won't hear it.

I really don't get it. If such existed you could put an EV in front of some of these people that had a thousand kilometer range, cost $1 per 100km to run, charged in 30 minutes, and was a joy to drive. and they would still refuse to accept that it's a good thing.

ascotbks, Jun 16, 10:00pm
i would love one. where can i get one. in fact if it did half what you say id be wrapped
500 kilometer range, cost $2 per 100km to run, charged in 60 minutes

ascotbks, Jun 16, 10:10pm
2035 update. movie is all go. had frank sinatra and bing crosby lined up to do supporting scenes at charging stations just like they did entertaining troops but instead entertaining nz pioneers. unfortunatly they had to pull out. they have an old converted battery powered 747 which held 20 people and some luggage and could have reached aussie via 20 other countries but unfortunatly distance to nz is just to much. they had thought of getting it further convered to a sea plane and do solar charge while cruising on the sea but have been told the weight of plane when it landed on water would immediatly cause it to sink. anyway ill have to find some local actors so when i do ill update

gazzat22, Jun 16, 10:55pm
There is you know its called a petrol station and they are everywhere day and night.

gazzat22, Jun 16, 10:59pm
Where can we buy one of these? the average person can only afford a JDM Nissan Leaf with a range of 100km provided you dont use the heater and/or stereo.

gazzat22, Jun 16, 11:02pm
The cost also Exceeds the average persons Bank Account.

trade4us2, Jun 16, 11:09pm
If you are buying an EV, it should be a hybrid.
I ran two large cars on CNG for 10 years, and I was glad that I could switch over to petrol when the CNG ran out. But the CNG was really cheap.

onl_148, Jun 16, 11:10pm
But while you are waiting for a charging station to become free you can at least console yourself with the warm of the smugness you have from being a "good little greenie" and buying an EV !
I understand that with a car like a Tesla, if you completely ignore all the warning etc about pending "running out of charge" and just carry on, the car will ultimately close down into some sort of "safe mode" and then it is some degree of mucking around to "rescue it", I do not think they like being towed, or they can be towed but only for a short distance.
As a few have stated for a run around town, going to work / supermarket then an EV is ideal. but taking it on a longer trip, inter city / town etc the shortage of charging stations would be, at the current time, be a concern to me !

gazzat22, Jun 16, 11:13pm
The hatred of EV,S is only surpassed by the hatred of EV owners for those who drive ICE cars and pay for the upkeep and building of roads with the taxes paid on petrol.
