Beacuse when and if we have snow again we can get to work, also want to be able to sit up higher in the car

An econimical one would be better to try and save on petrol

what size are you after!if you want an around town, 99% road use vehicle you might like something like a airtrek, or highlander, rav4, xtrail, forrester kind of thing, or if you plant to use it for any heavy towing or real off road something like a terrrano / surf / prado / bighornkind of thing.the more off road ability they have generally the less on road ability they have

That is a bit rough you buy one if you want,I was in a club for years and I did go bush, but if you prefer it for visibility you go for it, depending on budget Toyota

yes it is a free country and you can buy what ever you want BUT they are a pain for everyone else in town and dangerous, [ roll over etc ] still say they are for off road.townies seem to like them for a status symbol.i'm not talking Rav4 etc here .i know .i have a 4x4 but it is only used off road,i have a Toyota Corolla and Harley for every thing else and my wife uses a MX5 .never take the 4x4 to town

I agree the original poster needs to grasp fully just how much they are going to compromise on safety, economy, comfort and running costs when they buy an SUV type vehicle. If they then still want to spend/waste that much money then they can go for gold. I would suggest the likes of an Audi A4 Quattro or Passat Syncro/4motion preferably with the 1.8T engine. That will give you all the comforts and safety of a car and the 1.8T engine is going to be fairly economical as well. It is actually designed for exactly what you want to use it for (a car that is very capable in snow). The Volvo XC70 is another good option and the 2.4 is still not to bad on fuel.

Oh if you can afford it get either an Audi Q7 or VW Touran. Gorgeous SUVs. Hate what Mercedes have done to theirs and never liked the BMWs.

Actually yes people need to know what they are getting in to. Suppressing information does not help anyone. I would want someone to tell me if I was potentially going about something the wrong way, especially if it was going to cost me in terms of $$ and safety.

You'd be better getting the 2.5 or the smaller 2.7 or the fiat diesel.

talking about 4wd swhat happend to the guy that ran macau motors in penrose / better still what happend to all toyota 4wd s that he had out the back .

The Fiat Diesel one is the only one that makes real sense, trouble is its twice the budget.
Good chance here to do some illustrative comparisons. For general mixed knocking around the Grand Vitara in the link is going to use nearly $30 per 100km. The Passat, even though its the V6 and bigger than I was suggesting will only cost around $22 for the same 100km.

I bought a Landcruiser there in 2005 at not long after he closed down. Apparently he was sick of his yard being broken into and the damage done to his vehicles. As far as I know, he didn't continue trading elsewhere.

Not many 98 Camry's around with leather, cleaver 4WD, advanced V6 30 Valve quad cam engine, tiptronic 5 speed auto, respectable crash rating, 4 airbags etc etc.
Sorry, just realized you probably meant Camry because it is also reliable like a Camry. my bad.

Confused you ride a Harley what are the safety statistics on riding motorbikes! in town you have so many ppl movers and vans I don't think 4x4 make much of a difference really
richard198,
Sep 15, 3:16pm
The trouble is the OP wants an SUV. They specifically want to be higher up above the road so the Passat is not suitable.
craig04,

Still only manages 142kw's. Cleaver 4WD! What does that do! Chop your hand off when it detects slip! Not many Passats around with Japanese reliability (oh I didn't just say that, did I!).
