Teddy, if you don't get snow very often, it would be more economical to buy a vehicle that is not 4WD and to have a decent pair of chains. I was looking at updating my Corolla wagon with an Escape because I've always liked them. However after getting good advice on here, I've decided there is no point me getting a 4WD when most of my running is on sealed roads. Although we're getting kayaks this summer and will be doing more snow skiing in the future, a wagon will be easier to get things on and off of and I already have chains. It will also be more economical, safer and more comfortable. Am looking at a Focus, Golf or Passat. How high up are you wanting to be!

Further to shelleigh comment, even with a 4WD, you should still have chains.

Of the above three, the Focus is miles ahead! If you want a decent Golf, get an Octavia. If you want a decent Passat get a Superb.

Pico I agree re chains with a 4WD. It would be silly not to have them if there is a chance you may end up driving in snow. Although I'm sure a lot of people especially women don't think they need them if they have 4WD.
