Where are all the horsepower freaks!

yep, I get the turbo thing. Love 50SIX, although thats not really a subtle car :-)To me its not just about the speed/handling though, otherwise a new car would win out almost every time. It's also about the look/feel of the car.I like 60s and 70s stuff best, because thats what I was used to seeing as I was younger (Commodores seem new to be, bacause I remember them coming out).I loved my HQs and XA's, but obviously they would be out handled by a new commodore/falcon, and out braked, and are less comfortable etc etc, but that wasn't the point.
Given choice for a daily, I'd have one of the newer Commodore wagons (V8 obviously) with some power tweaks and a decent exhaust.Anyone got one they want to swap for a standard A32 Cefiro Wagon ;-)

People will remember a wild assed ruffy that did big burnouts, left the line hard and who's driver had a hot looking tart . more than some shiny assed low-blow car that broke a record. These are the things that etch themselves in memory banks .

trader_84, Sep 18, 7:39am
I don't see any redeeming features in terms of styling and shape of cars made anytime after the early 70's . not for 'toy' purposes anyway.

quickstitch, Sep 18, 7:40am
i think us V8 boys are just getting older and tamer. I've sold off my toys. My mate has taken his 9.7 second blown motor out of his street car and replaced it will a mild motor so he can take his kids out on family cruises. Other mate just have their toys parked up and basicallly get driven twice a year (wof time and maybe 1 cruise somewher). It'as sad, i use to like hanging out in town as a teenager and watching all the cool V8s cruise

mk3zephyr, Sep 18, 7:45am
Most ricer engines wouldnrt even be able to turn most superchargers, Look how much horsepower has to be made to even turn a top fuel supercharger, jap engines would have to have huge $$$$ invested and then would probably break anyway lol

extrayda, Sep 18, 7:45am
XC Coupes still look good to me (prefer XA's though). For australian cars probably late 60's to mid 70's is what I like.US stuff mainly mid to late fifties up to early 70's.I do quite like the 'new' Mustangs / Camaros etc though - never driven or been in one, so don't know how they feel inside (I'd guess the same as a modern Falcon / Commodore).

extrayda, Sep 18, 7:49am
Quickstitch is right. These days if your in town your more likely to hear lots of blowing off and such.Unless it's the Reclaim the City night (if they are still running!).Don't underestimate the jap stuff in terms of power / speed though.I just don't really find them exciting to look at / hear at all.I guess it's just a modern equivalent of the 'hot' option of having a 2.0 in your 1.3 litre escort, or the jacked up arse on your XA (been there, done that !).Also as you get older you seem to have less spare time to do stuff.

trader_84, Sep 18, 7:54am
I have always thought the XA Coupe was one of the horniest cars ever to roll outta a factory. I still remember the 'Radio Avon' one that used to run in Ruapuna, and a few years ago . a blue and black one from out of Wellington that used to run Masterton. Cool!

#1 , we are still shaking the ground out West ! we just dont drive aimlessly around as much these days , but we still rule the streets when we feel the need . Each to their own i say , but i know which cars the general public like, its been that way for decades and will always be like that

hotrodtodd1, Sep 18, 11:41am
No we havent died off, but if you remember back to when you were out cruising and hoping to get laid, as a youth, the old (over 30s) were tucked up at home with their kids and a mortgage, and the really old (over 40) were dreaming about retirement and getting laid if their bodies didnt creak too much .

I suspect that the only thing that has changed, is that we have gone from the youth section to the really old section

guider1, Sep 18, 11:58am
Hahahahahaha. well said!
I guess I see things a bit differently (maybe) having no kids, no wife or mortgage. in saying that all of my cars are at various stages of rebuilds or builds so I currently have nothing to skid right now anyway. got alot of expensive new parts sitting here but it is coming, just slower than i'd hoped!
I've got 2 sitting here with no engines & another still in the build stage. should have an engine for 1 shortly though with a bit of luck.
Just need someone to take the Mustang off my hands & the new car will take a leap forward again.

ive actually been getting the impression that the import/tuner scene is dying out and the classics and hot rods are gaining popularity.Ive been thinking that the boyracers are realising how tacky their cars really are.just look at the modified jap cars on here and how much theyre selling for, if anything modding your jappa will decrease its value.

ive said this before and ill say it again. The "import" scene is like pop music its really popular for a short amount of time then every1 forgets about it, a year on and people cant believe they listened to that tacky sh1t.Whereas hot rods and classics are like rock music they get better with age and everybody remembers them.Heavy metalwill never die even after the nuclear apocalypse there will be a cockroach playing a black sabbath riff somewhere

wrong2, Sep 18, 2:14pm
& yet the large car is being abandoned for little econo boxes

i think rose tinted posts generally ignore reality

a 2.0 four cylinder will cart 5 adults with power for overtaking. why have a 5.0 when you can only crawl at 100

gmphil, Sep 18, 2:25pm
im still here lol reading this sounds like me lot stuff in boxses still getn there
did have skids up n down road last week tho ,b4 i pull the motor for my project .
was hard to do tho (pull motor ) bein long time and was enjoying myself and the neibours seem to enjoy as well

lugee, Sep 18, 2:40pm
Because they're not designed for that, they're designed for power to weight ratio. With what you're saying though, I would like to see your V8 spool up the turbo from an RTA96-C.

rscozzie, Sep 18, 5:36pm
i rememeber wen a jap 6 clynder got band because it bet all the v8s haha

mgmad, Sep 18, 5:54pm
I remember when people could spell at least halfa sentence correctly.

rscozzie, Sep 18, 6:01pm
i also remember wen their wernt as many f#%k witts like u around

scotty20001, Sep 18, 6:15pm
it seems the fact is that most of the NZ public has been reduced to driving shit heaps like crv-s and accord euros (accord thais), very sad times somebody has to take a stand.

1fordluva, Sep 18, 6:36pm
All I have seen at willow bank on the weekend here in brisbane was big jethro v8,s with huge chinese hairdriers on them with giggle juice thrown in.
Blowers are really becoming a thing for the car show people.
Reason is the average joe cant afford a blower and when they see 2o+ psi on a built engine.they want it more than a blower.
