Well if you think your speedo is off drive slower simple. No excuse really. Be on the safe side.

The fact that you actually check your speedo period is a sign of a more alert driver. I am more concerned with the broader picture, I saw a student get run over by another student at about 20 clicks cause she was busy waving to mates. 56 clicks while checking the road doesn't concern me, 30 clicks while in a dream world does. People don't focus you could do 60 km/h and still be "safe" round a school but people can't handle a car or pay attention to save themselves, 20 minutes on state highway 1 will tell you that. I've always seen a major failing in training drivers on safe limits and how much time it does take to stop a travelling car they don't make you haul on picks during your licence checks and some people never bother to put themselves in a position to check it out. Not saying you should ALLOW speeding near schools but you have to be realistic about it when you get down to the finest level.
The only reason we have limits is cause people are too dumb to enforce it themselves or use common sense. I'm guilty of it to and accept it but I'm still capable of evaluating a situation so it is where I get a little ticked at splitting hairs. I paid my last ticket without too much fuss anyway.

That is total bullshit.

Surprising though just how many don't slow down when passing a stationery school bus that is taking on or dropping off children.ANYWHERE. I reckon there are lots who don't know the limit is 20km/h in that situation and that includes on "open road" areas where the limit is 100km/h.If reported and or caught here the law takes an extremely dim view of law breakers. It pays to be observant at all times when children are about as they are completely unpredictable!

Agreed total & utter bullshite, what's more important going slower so you can stop or react to a child running out when you least expect it or being party to a casualty due to quibbling about speedo error whatever! I know which I position I'd prefer to be in. Pity folks don't recognize when they could be going at a speed excessive to the conditions at the time and that pertains to all conditions not just the above! Driving like there's "no tomorrow" is rife in this country, why increase the chances of anybody being "fitted up for a wooden over coat!" (Coffin to the uninformed!)

At least while you were doing 56 kms a little child didnt run out in front of you . The difference of impact between hitting them at 50 kmh and 56kmh could be the difference between life and death . Try driving at 40 kmh around schools . Children are unpredictable !

pedophiles are the ones that slow down past schools

Wow, so having a non functioning speedo is a valid excuse for speeding! Wait until the word gets out!

Just slow down around schools, I was there when that kid was hit by a bus last week, 100m from school. Kid ran out onto road looking the other way, hit bus right in front of drivers window. Bus wasn't even doing legal speed.

There's always one isn't there! Numbnuts and I reckon your attitude would change if you actually hit some child.or would it!

pollymay,
Sep 25, 6:32pm
Not really but it happened 5 minutes before I got flashed so I was royally pissed. Baaaaad day. Plus the road was totally empty so there was no one to pace and I went at a "safe speed for the conditions"
There have been 4 major accidents outside my workplace in the last year or so yet they don't even put up signs BUT the woman up the road said the guys coming from the city and doing burnouts in the gravel "scared her kids" so they sent a team out that week to put up bollards to stop them but still no signs or reseal on the dangerous corner even though it's been reported many times -_-
A van there on the straight leading to the corner would save lives to but it's open road and not many people travel it and it's too exposed to catch them yet everyone argues about being 1 click outside the limit saving lives near a school, now excuse me as I go put out another burning wreck by myself.

No sympathy here, speed past a school pay the penalty dickhead! end of story!

pollymay.Does your car have a tachometer/rev counter in it, most have these days, if so it's a fairly poor excuse speeding as surely you'd have a fairly good indication from it as to what speed you were doing! If not excuses still don't cut it in my book or that of the law either simple, it's not hard to reasonably access your speed even without a functioning speedo and 15km/h over the limit would most definitely be noticeable.

Yep .It's as simple as that .I agree wholeheartedly.

That only works if you know what you are comparing to. I noted when it snapped the car was doing 3100 at 100kph, the rest was just guessing, I dropped my speed but it wasn't enough. Had there been people about I would of dropped it more but there was not a soul be it car or person. After I had it fixed I noted the rpm vs speed in a couple gears but that is after the fact.
I've seen people with their heads near chopped off from a fence railing through the car but no one will come fix the corner, it changes surface abruptly mid corner and has gravel, I sweep it time to time but I'm a little unsympathetic to arguing 1kph when spending my money/time (extinguishers aren't free) on putting out peoples cars and dragging them out with the tractor. I can't see a way out of it but it isn't the crime of the century to yell at OP about being some horrible person.

Am I right in thinking there was an article on Tv about this some time ago! I didn't think I was yelling at you but being copped is being copped I'm afraid!

as long as he was not driveing on the footpath and the kids were not on the road how were any lives in danger! rural schools still have 70kph or even 100kph limits around then are country kids/drivers smarter or do there lives not matter!
murph2068594,
Sep 26, 7:06am
At 56kph if you hit a child he/she will go under your car and will be killed, hit an adult and they will be thrown up onto your bonnet and then roll off to the ground, they may live.
It's 40kph outside any school in Australia, it's enforced with massive signs, road markings and cameras outside each school.
You have 2 choices, Slow down, or live the rest of your life knowing that you killed another human being, who was just starting their life.

There are a good number of "School Zone" 40km/h signs around and they have flashing lights and still I see heaps not obeying that restriction. It's mandatory to pass by all stationery school buses at 20km/h with children either being picked up or dropped off, doesn't matter whether its in a town or country situation, heck school buses even display SCHOOL signs as well as some having the 20km/h regulation but it astounds me just how many actually don't slow down at all. Had an incident down south a couple of weeks ago where a car with an impatient driver over took me 3 wide after I had slowed to 20km/h going by this school bus, he honked his horn etc and flew by at I estimated more than the open road speed limit to be picked up a km or so down the road by a cop who had obviously been informed by someone (not me) back at that school area. Serves the idiot right & I hope he went for the "High Jump!" Guess what he was driving .you guessed it a big BMW late model one too I think it might have been a 750iL v12 .it was a LWB one I saw that quite easily. Strewth the number of idiots in BMW's and the like I see that think they are "King of the Road" is very annoying especially when you see them all to often flouting speed limits and doing idiotic passing in places where I'd think twice about passing or not pass at all!

The OP is an idiot, seen it far to often people speeding past schools. Either way you should be doing 50.
