Get one with a GPS database, that auto-learns false alarms (door openers etc).

I use an Escort 9500ix. Very good.
Any detector will give very little warning of mobile cameras. The beam used is fairly narrow, and not particularly powerful. It will give a warning, but only about two or three seconds.
It picks up the Ka band used in police cars at quite a good range. It will alert to lasers, too, but frankly, if you're in an area where lasers are used, probably won't do much good. The laser operator only needs to lock the laser on to the target and press a button; speed captured. It takes less than a second, if done correctly. Not enough time to react and slow down.

Happy with my Whistler XTR690

no its is cheaper to tell him to slow down and avoid getting any tickets.

I Bet its people like you [ and the likes of ] that holds up traffic.I Drive a milk tanker and i tell you what the slow drivers are the most dangerous on the road and the most ignorant [ ask any truck driver they will tell you the same ] It would be ok if they let the faster traffic through but most do not.impatience is a killer.I really get very sick of these bloody twats on here going on about speeding .I'm not talking dangerous speeds here,i'm talking common sense speeds, driving to the conditions .and by the way i do a driving course EVERY year and also assessed every year .I am not a dangerous driver but some times i do drive over a 100ks as do most people.GET A GOOD DETECTOR they will help.mine saves me mostly in the lower speed zones if you are no paying good attention some times especially in area's I'm not familiar with, very easy to miss the speed zone signs

Quote "If you're caught three times or so speeding, you will lose your licence because of demerits, so dumb post. My Uniden saves me all the time and has paid for it self numerous times over." unquoteFour things.Firstly, you didn't really get the point, did you! It was about relevant costs.Secondly,If the ""catches" are by a speed camera there are no demerit points and thus no loss of license under normal circumstances. Thirdly, how do you know your Uniden has saved you so many times!I mean you hardly get a notice to say that you didn't get caught. so how do you really know!Fourth, I am sure my mark one eye-ball has saved me many times by being aware of camera points, cars and cops.

This is really good advice."Believe nothing what you hear and half what you see".

why don't you buy him $1200 worth of burglar tools, think of the fun he could have using them.
Sadly he wouldn't get to kill many people with boring old jemmy bars and police scanners.
Yeah stick to driving really fast on public roads - that's just so cool. kids are worth double points.

falcon-hell, Nov 26, 5:14pm
nightsky-seriously-you are a dick.

ooh i don't know,whats your address!

Clearly you are fortunate enough to not know anyone killed in a high speed motor vehicle accident. Lucky you.

I believe this to be the case as well BUT the thing is this is only an issue if you happen to be the only car around - most of the time there is another car within a km or so, when he turns it on & catches the speed of that car way up in front of you your radar goes off & then goes quiet again when he turns it off, that's all you need to know there is one around.

I can only speak for the V1 which is what I have but it often takes a min or two before I eventually come across the police car that is setting off my radar, fantastic range!

Cheers
Andy

It probably makes you guys feel very cool talking about avoidingpolice detection as you speed around the country, there is one thing and only one thing to remember here and that is SPEED KILLSand I sincerely hope you never kill anyone in doing so!

falcon-hell, Nov 27, 12:21pm
no i don't actually,we don't do high speeds,5-10 km over the open road limit, thats all we ever do,but we can still get pinged,so thats why i am thinking about the radar, happy now!
the fact is that a lot of the drivers are pissed at the time,we don't drink and drive,so have a rant if you so wish.

falcon-hell, Nov 27, 12:22pm
all you guys that currently do have radars, how much faster do you go over the limit!out of interest.
might get the nanas going though.

rovercitroen, Nov 27, 12:54pm
Depends on the conditions - traffic, weather, road etc. That's why I use a detector - to drive to the conditions, not some arbitrary number on the speedo dial that the police say is safe no matter what. sometimes the speed limit is even too fast in some conditions. According to some of the posters above if I'm doing 101 km/hr I'm suddenly dangerous, or worse still if I'm doing 99 km/hr I'm as safe as.

ninja_man, Nov 27, 1:06pm
can you get tickets doing 105-110 in a 100k zone! i thought 10ks over was the max tolerance.

muzzaandmich, Nov 27, 1:43pm
is this a responsible thing to do .or are you encouragingyour loved ones to speed. SPEED KILLS. think again.what do you value the most .!

hoarder85, Nov 27, 1:57pm
It the cop is a d*ckhead you can lol.

matthew111, Nov 27, 2:02pm
You idiot. 99km per hour is perfectly fine.130 km per hour is not acceptable. As a truck driveryou would be at 90 km per hour so there is noissue is there!

spead, Nov 27, 2:08pm
offrd1 if you are a professional driver you should not be admitting to speeding and you should know that stopping your fully laden truck or impacting it with something isgoing to kill if not you then certainly someone else. Id love to know your employer so they can be aware of your attitude towards unsafe driving. You say you are not a dangerous driver. if you speed then you are. Traffic safety authorities who design the roads will tell you that one of the highest reasons for fatals is excess speed.

offrd1, Nov 27, 2:21pm
I know someone that got killed by a slow driver [ my cousin ] he was only travelling at 50 ks.not sure what that proves but it still killed him.very sad

offrd1, Nov 27, 2:22pm
SO DO SLOW DRIVERS.

offrd1, Nov 27, 2:29pm
NotA IDIOT AT ALL.My radar is used in my car and bike NOT my truck.but as i have said for me the speed zones are where i get saved the most with the detector.[ i also do huge mile on my bike ]

mugenb20b, Nov 27, 2:29pm
What a load of crap! What are you suggesting, that we all drive at 15km/h! I don't drive fast and I don't speed (but I used to). I never had an accident, ever. What kills, is lack of common sense, concentration, and driver training in general. When some people get into trouble, they don't know how to get out of it, they just sit there like a sausage waiting for an impact. Different story if you are sitting in a cue of traffic and you get rear ended etc.

a18a, Nov 27, 2:35pm
Speed doesn't kill. Crashing does.
