VW Touran: Known issue with FSI engines!

corbytas, Jan 30, 6:09am
We are looking to buy a Japanese imported 2004 VW Touran with 2.0 FSI engine. The saleman's said the engine had been 'repaired/replaced' for a known issue with these type of engines costing approx. $3K.

The story is something happens to the gear box when it moves between the gears and the motor starts to 'clunk' through them around the 70,000km mark. He said this is a known issue for Audi's and VWs that use this type of engine.

Does this sound right!

Anyone experienced this!

Cheers

Well all that just sounds bloody awful doesn't it, a fusillade of electronic, mechanical and fuel system woes that will totally wipe out any fuel savings you might have had if you bought one instead of those nasty outdated technology Jap cars that nobody buys in preference to Fiats and VW's. . Any sane person would be getting their running shoes on and heading down the road to get a Toyota. In this case it sounds like the dual mass flywheel had failed and was replaced for $3K.

Oh my god! An oil pump driven by interference fit of a hexagonal shaft pushed into a round coupling which no doubt leads to failure - why on earth would they even design it that way!

Im yet to come accross one that has done it. Known issue probably means its happened before in 0.001% of vehicles which is still a number of vehicles on a global scale but not enough to worry about.

Don't listen to the silly negativity about anything not Japanese. Compared to the Japanese equivalents the Touran trumps them all hands down in every way no question.

obviously not in reliability though.

They only seem to be unreliable in N.Z. for some strange reason.

If anything doubts that the Touran's have loads of problems and other VW's you need to start reading the UK posts. Most repairs nearly equal new second hand car. ESP, Gearbox, engine failure, the list goes on and is scary.
