Question re VW Beetles.

lozz28, Dec 9, 6:14am
Looking at buying a VW Beetle, are there any specific things to look out for when looking for the right one! Any info regarding them would be appreciated!

Are we talking the real VW Beetle or the pretend modern ones!

lozz28, Dec 9, 6:19am
Haha the pretend modern one! (I did however used to have a 'real' one)!

From all accounts from the motoring scribes ,(I have never driven one) you will be dissapointed with the "new" ones , drive poorly compared to the other "retro" car , the mini.

They're basically a Golf with a badly designed and space inefficient body plonked on top, for instance they have a tiny boot and rear seat area yet the dashboard in front of you is huge and protrudes about a metre into the cabin. The body design also makes the underbonnet area cramped and they are pigs to work on, even simple things like changing headlight and taillight bulbs are a drama due to poor design and crappy plastics used in them. They're one of those vehicles that, if you are in love with the appearance of it nothing else will do but if day to day practicality is an issue you are better off with something else. They're also grossly overpriced for what you get IMO.Various electrical gremlins seem to be the main issues that plague these things and make life a misery after a while, especially immobilisers and SRS/ABS problems. Many have bailed out of them within a short time and got something more reliable and practical (even other Euro cars) because they found these things disappointing and expensive to operate.Good luck you will need it

Nice flower on the dash though.

If you can afford it consider the Fiat 500, surprisingly it achieves both excellent retro looks AND is a fantastic drive and has engineering that is the envy of many its size/price retro or not. Brilliant vehicle.

The 500 is tiny on the outside too but still relatively roomy inside which is a plus around town.

Parking can be fun since you can't see the edges from the driver's seat!
My mother - in - law drives a convertible and loves it.
