WHOOO HOOOOO . It's ALIVE
THe Nissan LIVES . maybe not my hands/ wrists/ arms/ ribs. but it's running again.
After re-fitting the starter, I noticed the solenoid connection were upside down (original battery cableto bottom bolt / new starter with battery connection on top bolt) So yea cables pretty precise as to placement so decided to swap the cables over to let me connect the battery cable correctly & easily. Reassembled everything else/ dropped in the battery & NOTHING, doa.
Shite ,,, to cut the story shorter. it turns out that the NEW solenoid is polarity sensitive. Had to re-strip part of the car/ work in a now tighter gap & swap the cables over back to original/ bend/twist & reshape the battery connections to fit higher then normal & get that $%$%$# back on all with ONE hand in the gap .Oh & fit then do up the nuts.
Start good now, just have to bed in the rusty brake disks & take it up for a wof then reg.

They were a jap copy of an Austin motor. Yep everything fell of those old British motors. Whether it was meant to or not.

Yep, known that for many years Austin & Nissan had a deal going just after the 2nd WW to help each other. Austin A30 Devons (or was that Farina's) & Somersets were sent over to Japan & re-manufactured there. The 1st BlueBird to come to NZ had an Austin motor & box
Oddly enough . AUSTIN /DATSUN share 5 of the 6 letters in their names.

The 310 and 410 were copies of the "B" series BMC motors - but, there were enough differences to make interchange impossible. e.g. Head studs= different spacing Engine mounts = different angles sump layout
The 510 was a copy of a copy of a Mercedes engine - maybe THATis why they were mechanic-friendly!
I had examples of each in the 70's, the 510/1600 was a rocket for it's day, it was also offered with 1300 or 1400.
At one stage, I had a 510 station wagon with an 1800 motor fitted - THAT went like a cut cat.

The jobs back on . ;-( Yea got sick of it & other things got in my way so left the ^%$# parked up. Got back in to it today & found a reasonable way to get that starter out. Yep bush's are certainly buggered alright but the starter appears to be ok.
Question. Best place price wise & workmanship in Hamilton to get the bush's & brush's done & starter all checked out.

I had one of these come into the workshop last month, was flat out at the time. Took one look and shot it over the road to the mech's we do electrical work for. Let them take it off. Needless to say, I wasn't their fav once they finally got the starter off. Looks like i dodged a bullet

Guess what the owners husband will be advising in the future, a car that isn't so damn fang dangled and so poorly designed in respect of the repairs that should be considered a routine operation and not what the thread title states.

LOL yea got that right.
Have learnt a lot about THAT issue & now have an easier removal path for the starter. just need to find out where & how much the bush's/ overhaul will be NOT putting a s/h unknown starter back in there .for fairly clear reasons (you would think)

Book up the cosmetic surgeon while ya at it & a few JD's for good measure.
Found a way to get the starter out, without having to move the exhaust. Still not easy, but less to unboltMUST be good.
Wife thought I had a few new freckles on the backs of my hands but ,. NOooo **** Damn it all, was in jaffalandlast week . oh hang on, only got this done THIS week . Maybe next week aye . ;-) Whats the offer & I may consider a weekend job!

Clutch replacement on a Lotus Motorsport Exige with the 6-speed gearbox option. Engine has to come out, which means rear half of car needs to be disassembled. If you've got the 5-speed like most of them were, there's enough room to just drop the box out the bottom

To remove the starter on the awd attessa's, most mechanics remove the exhaust to create a gap to pull the starter through. On the 96 Attessa, you can pull the starter through the right side steering rack hole, (with a twist or 2 & the steering rack turned hard right)
Apparently Some models, you can get the inlet manifoldoff reasonably easy & lift the starter up past the top of the motor. You CAN'T get the inlet manifold off on the 96.

Where is the leak coming from ! there are 2 "O" rings at the top of the cover which are pretty common to leak from there. You can do it with the head still on. from memory you undo the sump and pull it out from the bottom as there are a couple of dowels that hold it in. When you put it back on push the top of the cover in as hard as you can while pushing up so your line'd up with the dowels then you can lever it from there. Just make sure you put your sealer on first before re-attaching it. Good luck and buy plenty of plasters if done in the car.

or if it is the "O" rings just put some more sealer around it with your finger for a "quick fix" keep the Mrs happy for a little while
