Not strange at all but rare in NZ. VWs first non air cooled car.

Quite rare world wide, a NSU R80 with a conventional motor.

About its only claim to fame was it signalled VW's change of design direction, but in itself it was terrible, funny thing was that it was supposed to address the NSU Ro80's biggest fault by replacing the short lived rotary with a normal piston engine, but it still failed to ignite.Had VW not had the Polo/Golf/Passat/Scirocco in the pipeline and sales of the Beetle still reasonable it could have easily finished them off, they were in a very financially dodgy situation at the time.VERY surprising to see one in NZ, given the G plate its has clearly been here since '72 or so, wonder if it was an official or private import or was brought in for the German embassy or something!

Ok, so I underestimated. Cool collectors piece for the VW (of which I am one) buff.
