my eb xr8 auto done 309xxx still 'perfect' lol. sometimes the price of the higher ks example is too good to ignore; and sometimes your luck is in i guess

Theres been a bit of brain washing going on there mate.
in 'TA AWD DAYS" of british cars they really did need a full engine rebuild at 100 miles.
Also in the "bad old days" of jap importsoften the engine was toast at 100km INDICATED.that diddn't take into account the 2 or three hundred thousand k wound off the clock in japan

I am a similar vintage as yourself, but don't forget we talked about 100miles, not km. You need to convert your thinking to 160k to be the same, even though you do have to take into consideration the huge leaps in reliability (thank goodness), I flick off my cars now when they reach 200km and have a good reliable run as well as value for money.

Kinda funny that this is up post 28 and nobody has even attempted to answer.

Did a quick search - 2000 Toyota Vitz, 120k, 1000cc engine= $5k
2001 Vitz, 43k, 1300cc engine = $7250

So perhaps 50% more if this is typical (I realise different engine)! Look for other examples.this isn't rocket science, kinda funny how people get flighty when somebody wants to talk dollars.

I said I wouldn't buy a 10 year old car with 45km but I'd buy one of the same year with 125km. I don't want a car that's been sitting around corroding internally from lack of use.

My wife bought her car new in 2005 and has just turned over 30k. Its been correctly maintained according to her car's handbook. In January it'll be 7 years old. That's an average mileage of about 4,300km a year, which is similar to the 45k/10 year car in your example. Its in unmarked perfect condition and I have no idea why you wouldn't buy it if it was your sort of car!

Cheers, mate. Oh yes, I do understand all of that, its just a hard habit to shake. Apart from one Mitsi Eterna Jimport I had, that crapped out at 80k (the mechanic who re-did the motor reckoned they'd taken at least 200k off the speedo), I've never actually owned a car that has surpassed 100k. However, since I'm not earning much these days, I think my current car will get me past that mark. Currently at nearly 60k (bought it at 28k, 3+ years ago).

I wouldn't buy it because it's probably done a lot of cold starts and short distance running.

cold starts and short distance running are much worse for engine wear than warm starts and long distance running as i'm sure you know

- i would much rather buy a rural car that has done higher ks (longer trips) than a similar urban car with low ks that has only been taken down the road to the supermarket and back

Have you been to Japan personally to comment on traffic jams! Do traffic jams not exist in New Zealand! I know many people who leave their engines running for an extended period of time - it doesn't just happen in Japan.

Cars have changed a lot since 1964. At 100,000 miles a 60s car may have been had it, but at 100,000kms a modern vehicle or even a 20 year old vehicle still has another 100,000+ kms of life left in it.

My Japanese import was five years old and had 72,000 on the clock when it was imported. five years later and its done 120,000. That means it did comparatively more mileage in Japan than I do here.

yeah mate, the longer you leave a vehicle the more oil drains away from the contact surfaces, and the colder the start-up.

Because I bought a car with 37000kms on its clock when i was in Auckland some 10 years ago

It had just pottered from NAvy HQ in Devenport to their house and back for 5 years - No marks, neat as and trouble free motoring!

NOPE within 6 months the engine needed a de-coke (ie a diesel clean) and the manufacturers inbuilt (and never activated) fuel supply safety switch started to intermittently turn itself on - making the car impossible to start and costing $1400 to find the issue as it was intermittent - luckily a guy in Silverdale had come across this issue ONCE before (even Moyes Panmure and Holden Dealerships were baffled by the issue)

Bought the 5 yr old 37000kms vehicle for $16K and within 1 year we had spent $4500 keeping it on the road with this and that that had gone wrong and so forth, so we sold it and bought a toyota corolla diesel wagon instead and that cost us $4500 and laasted 3 years!needed nothing doing to it other than service - had 320,000kms on clock

Since then I have tried to find cars with at least 150,000kms on it - and have owned (the best cars that is) others with over 400,000kms and they have run the best and driven the best and cost the least to keep going!

Dude thats NOT comparing appleswith apples at all.
The 1300cc vitz is one year yonger and is a 1300not a thousand.
So you have a year variation and engine size variation as well as the milage.

OOOHHHH I'm very much a thinker, and what i'm thinking now you just don't want to know. How do you think we winter over machines! They just sit there not doing anything for 6 months, they then get checked over then fired up and given heaps for 6 months and then wintered over again. They don't have any issues with this, why will a car. I know a guy with a 59 Caddy thats done only 30k miles in its whole life, he goes out fires it up and takes it for a run once or twice a month, never has a issue with it, I think what your thinking about is a old wifes tale.

I've encountered similar "knowledge" about flat towing front wheel drive (ie minis) All the old boys told me I'd seize a mini solid towing it flat long distance. Told me the oil pump wasn't distributing, told me this, told me that.all from experience.
I picked up a mini that hadn't run in 6 months, flat towed it 190km's, then pulled the engine and cracked it open. What do I find.all gears well coated, all bearing surfaces lubricated, not a spec of corrosion.

A little logic and thought goes a bunch further than hear-say.
