karbanz,
yes you are right with your last post, BUT
please read the original question carefully.

kazbanz, Jan 2, 12:38am
I have and you are being carefull NOT to say what the car is so we can offer you advice.

say you have a chance of buying a second hand car, you have two cars to choose from, both are identical, make, model, year, colour, etc etc.
one has 125,000k on the clock, and a sell tag of $5000, the other has 45000k on the clock, how much more would you be prepared to pay !
is there a rough rule of thumb , a complex calculation, or a wild guess !

iill get back to you kasbanz

Depends on how old.

Would I buy a car with 45k that was 10 years old! No way. But I'd buy one with 125k.

budgel, Dec 26, 10:04pm
I think there seems to be a big psychological tripping point when the large figures are reached100,000200,000.

General condition is important too, a well serviced car with higher ks will be a better bet than a neglected lower k car.

Having viewed and driven both, it is usually pretty apparent to the purchaser which one is the better deal.

Every buyer has to strike the mileage vsdollar value for themselves.
I think it is more important if one plans to turn the car over in a relatively short time, less important if the buyer is going to be putting high ks on it fairly rapidly.

bellky, Dec 26, 10:05pm
^^ also depends on type of car, eg. motor size and transmission type with larger motor and auto trans outlasting small manual - of course the individual condition of the car is important too

the-lada-dude, Dec 26, 10:14pm
do the car dealers still have those price reference books !
obviously age of vehicle must come into it, but iwas just thinking of straight mileage say 2006 model but one has twice the k's
come on you dealers out there, karbanzt.graycarstaurangaetc

trogedon, Dec 26, 10:22pm
Big autoboxes can crap out and manual box keeps going fine.

mrfxit, Dec 26, 10:28pm
Basically if a vehicles going to have problems, it will start showing either side of approx 20K & 160K
Unless it's done a lot in a VERY short time /owned by teens/ grumpy old ladys,, then it CAN get a bit more interesting.
Small fleets within a large company not good either

intrade, Dec 26, 10:46pm
i think they are existing red book or something . With milage however it is easy to temper most models at the click off a button to change milage . so unless you got the service history from day one then low milage means squat.

male_timaru, Dec 26, 10:56pm
it's more about the maintenance than the mileage

would buy a 360,000km vehicle over a 170,000km vehicle if the maintenance was kept up and recorded along the way

gets frustrating (as with my current car) when someone has kept up maintenance etc but left out important stuff (like changing water pump at same time as cambelt only 20,000kms ago - obviously they were told water pump was fine and not to worry, OR they were told it'll be another $250 and thought bugger that!)

mugenb20b, Dec 26, 11:15pm
Depends on the make and model of the car.

mugenb20b, Dec 26, 11:16pm
I wouldn't be. Engines are easier to repair than 200 000kms worth of stone chips.

alan1111, Dec 27, 12:16am
Being a mechanic i would buy the car with higher milage. What people tend to forget with Jap imports the odometer might be low but that is not a genuine reading because up there when they go to the beach etc they could get there at 8am leave someone in the car with engine running so the airconditioning is on when they get back which could be 6 hours later. So the engine is working but because car not moving the odometer is st ill low.Plus they have hours and hours of traffic jams.

00basil00, Dec 27, 12:23am
Depends on how many owners and whether is nz new. Im only the 3rd owner of my car, it was sold new and has full service history with it, its done 320,000km but runs like new, doesnt use oil and water, interior is mint, paint is in realy good cond apart from some stone chips, basicaly it comes down to who owned the car and how well it has been looked after

mugenb20b, Dec 27, 12:23am
Yes, but that can be checked easily enough. I just look for signs of sludge and varnish around the oil filler cap and under the rocker cover. On top of that, I check for oil leaks, smoke and the sound of the engine on start up when cold. If I have any doubts, I walk away. I've bought several low mileage imports with excellent results.

kazbanz, Dec 27, 12:26am
Lada dude.--There is NO simple answer or formula.
But if you can buy a 2006 car with 125000km on the clock in good condition for $5000 then unless its a total lemon I would buy it.
if you want to be SPECIFIC.I'm sure you'll get a better reply

mrcat1, Dec 27, 12:30am
The OP stated same year!So you wouldn't buy one with 45K on the clock but you would if it had 125K on the clock and both the same year,MMMMMMM I can really see the sense in that, NOT.

male_timaru, Dec 27, 12:39am
hahahaha - so you prefer a shitbox car that looks good than a good car that looks like a shitbox - great reasoning lol

carstauranga001, Dec 27, 2:14am
More info required (as Kaz said). Same year it may be but is this 2005 or 1995! I think make and model has some bearing on this decission too.

do the car dealers still have those price reference books !
obviously age of vehicle must come into it, but iwas just thinking of straight mileage say 2006 model but one has twice the k's
come on you dealers out there, karbanz t.gray carstauranga etc

Any such book was good for me 25 years ago when learning but these days I think they're out of date before the ink is dry and my own experiance is a better guide. Hell if I'm unsure I just search Trade Me. That's as good as anything today!

kazbanz, Dec 27, 2:44am
OYY CT--whatcha doin workin today!

carstauranga001, Dec 27, 2:54am
SFA mate. Playing on the internet. Actually the office works up to date now so watch out any victims tomorrow!

kazbanz, Dec 27, 3:01am
I lucked in --its always good for us this time of year with the other locals closed up. 1 deal and one finance deal done

bmwnz, Dec 27, 7:52pm
I've been driving since 1964 and I still have that hangup about mileage. I've read on here so many stories about high mileage cars still running perfectly etc, but this old attitude that '100k =off to the wreckers' takes some shifting. Therefore, given the choice, I would always go for lower mileage (assuming all else, such as condition etc) was similar.
