I'm not versed in buying very cheap or old cars, but I'll try to play this game according to my own opinions. I think I'd be prepared to pay $7500 for the 45k one and wouldn't be interested in the 125k car at all.

Yes, I know about short cold runnings being bad for the engine. But seriously, how many f.ed low mileage engines have you come across! Besides, engine oils in this day and age are pretty damn good.

As for buying a rural car over a low mileage one, lol. You're kidding, right! My god, you've got no idea how rural cars are treated.gravel roads and all. Not for me, thanks.

WOW !
someone finally saw the original question for what it was !
ta SMAC,and BMWNZhad a punt !
anyone else !
it doesn't matter what it is vehicle wise as long as the comparison is increadibly SIMILAR and i suspect it probably works out to a % value, or a rule of thumb, but you may not realise it

" probably works out to a % value, or a rule of thumb, but you may not realise it"

i'm not so sure mate about the rule of thumb % talk mate. seems to me you need to have the particular vehicles in mind and make subjective judgement based on knowledge/experience taking into account individual aspects of each vehicle

a % value or rule of thumb just won't work imo

bellky, Dec 28, 8:32pm
i agree. that comment you refer to doesn't really say much about anything except the commenter

FOR GOSH SAKES --Dude it DOES MATTER --if it diddn't why the heck would I darned well ask for a specific year make/model/ engine size etcfrom you.!
A 1000cc toyota Vitzis different from a 2004 mazda Atenza
An Isuzu bighorn diesel is different from a 2000 nissan cube
Add to that the "popularity factor" and the "keeping up with the joses" effect.
-Popularity factor-If a SPECIFICcombination ofspecs is there then it throws everything off.
Keeping up with the joneses factor-timed right a car with double the local average milage will sell for close to the price of the low milage stuff because the low milage stuff has sold out -theres a hype to buy that car. Then the market gets filled up again and timed badly the value drops a lot.

I'm with you, the 45K car I would buy, the 125K I would not, so to give my own opinion to the question, the lower Ks one is worth a lot more to the seller as he has a larger customer base. The actual $$ value would still depend on condition, servicing, body, tyres, options etc

Well its an interesting question but an easy answer for me. If I drove two cars that were the same but one has 120km and one 45km providing the 120km one ran just as well as the 45km one I would go with the 125km and save sum cash. You can bet the 45km one will be considerably dearer but not always better than a higher km one.
Low kms mean nothing if it has had an abusive life. I drove several different carsrecently all the same sort but differing kms and I can tell you low kms mean squat
but it was still a supposed selling point by the car yard.
Worn out bits on a 12km car can oddly enough be replaced making it just as good again, ie suspension, ball joints,CVs and so on.Its amazing what a new set of front shocks can do for a car and there not overly expensive for your average type car.
Plus it also come down to what people can afford. I see some wont buy a car over 100km on it. LOL must be great to be that well off and be able to afford to loose the deprectiation.I dont think ive had a car under 100km and never yet had one blow up.

lada.looks like your question was just a little tooo hard/threatening.
