OP if it was a member of your family that was killed and it was the other persons doing would you want them to be held accountable for it! or dismissed due to lack of evidence. would you like someone to learn from the accident! need the facts so they can analisye (SP) if any learnings can come from it.
As a vol firey we need to protect our scene and ourselves. If that means blocking a main road then so be it. sorry if this upsets yours or anyone elses route of travel.
We do our best to clear the roads as fast as we can and yes this sometimes takes hours thats just the way it is.

you will be pleased to know that there is currently a car crash in the southland district which have closed roads BUT there is a diverson in place!

Well said, as long as you get home to what's really important the inconvenience of sitting for a while on a reclining chair in a air conditioned cabin listening to some music is pretty insignificant.

Maybe you should just have a little patience in times like this. We were due at a function in Wellington but just delayed setting off for a few hours. If you were aware of this crash location you would know there is no easy way to get traffic past the scene. But then again, just another winge against emergency services like normal aye jazz

Fully agreed, kate.
Our first priority is SAFETY, of the scene-workers (fire, ambo, police) and victims, then, the rst of you, the general public.
Road-flow is way down the list.
I have JUST got back from the second MVA on Schedewys Hill in two days -- both in near enough the same spot.
But, hey, we don't need the Northern M'way extension, it's only a "holiday h'way", right!
Tell that to the rellies of the ones who would still be ALIVE if we had it!

totally, the work emergency workers do is incredible on a daily basis just be patient and work around it.

Sticks in my memory the last fatality I went to along with the ones before that. Also sticks in my memory the idiots who can not see what the emergency services have to deal with. Lot of praise for the emergency services yet very few will actually step forward to take up that challenge, the ones that do put up with a lot more than the inconvieniance of being stuck in a traffic jam becuase someone has made a misjudgement and aid the ultimate price.

Just a thought how much complaining over the road being closed for a few hours!Yet you have SH3 blocked for months at Manawatu Gorge!

my son was traveling behind the car that caused the accident ,theysupplied the fire extinguisher and helpedput out the fire. The boysgot a grilling before leaving yesterday from meaboutdriving safely , speed etc and consequences, theywere really shaken up by what they had witnessedyesterday , they have hopefully learn' ttaking risks and speed can kill.

In my post #26 it shows an example that they can let traffic through if they want to. I believe if it was a private company doing the investigation it would be over much quicker, govt. depts are not noted for their speed or interest in the public. They live in an artificial world unrelated to what is going on in the real world of competition, performance and self improvement. I was a public servant for a while.

That specific incident was a major, major and not the same as a two car pile up.Exceptions prove rules.!Ditto when the helicopter and light plane collided over Auckland's motorway system a few years back. The chaos was widespread as there was no other way of bypassing Auckland.
The fact remains that state highway 1 is our main arterial road and there are far too many places where there is no alternative.Sure, we don't have a population of 70m, but all that means is that land is more accessible now than it will be in the future.
Much as I agree with the sentiments about being delayed "for a few hours", the real truth is that within those delays may well be people who are adversely affected in all sorts of ways, from catching very expensive international flights and connecting flights for a once in a lifetime trip, to those with minor medical problems, people with urgent businesses to attend to that may affect hundreds of jobs for many years ahead. Once the survivors are safely removed - whether that be minutes or hours, the remainder is more geared to trying to blame someone or satisfy watertight court cases which is only a secondary consideration.Nothing is going to bring the dead back to life and my philosophy is simple enough. If I die through someone's incompetence as a driver, then that person carries that blame for life, with or without a successful court case against them.Or, Karma.
If the basic facts cannot be established fairly quickly (80/20 rule applies), then so be it.The cost benefit of going to the n'th degree is rarely worth it as most juries fall asleep during extended court cases anyway - I know that pretty well, having spentmany, many days as a dock officer in high court trials over several years!
I have no problem with the fire and ambulance services doing their job properly and in safety, but that was not the main purpose of the initial post.

socram. how would you feel if it was your mother or your child or partner that was killed. would you want answers! would you need answers and facts to grieve, to move on! etc

So if a landslip blocks the road, truck spills its load of dangerous chemicals you would still be complaining about the speed of the clean up!

- Build more roads, big, wide, roads, instead of our little goat tracks that pass for national 'highways'.

Sorry to say that I have a very philosophical view on life/death. Once a life is taken from you, it is taken.I am sure I am not the only one on here who has lost loved ones both on the road and even in a house (electrocuted), but they are gone.Nothing will bring them back.Answers!No. One was lost having traded in her ancient trusty old Moggie Minor convertible for a newer VW beetle. She was in a head on crash against - yes, a Moggie Minor. Had she still had the old Moggie, she might well have survived.Who do you blame!VW!The driver's choice of car!It doesn' really matter now does it.She is gone.

In the U.K when a person jumps in front of a train the authorities have 40 mins to do their business and open the tracks back up.

Agreed. It would take litle more than some decent organisation to establish a Traffic Management Unit as a separate part of First Response, Sure the priority of police is to isolate the scene. Sure the priority of fire and ambo is to deal with the accident. But what would it take guys, to establish a separate unit whose sole and separate task was to set up the appropriate detours and manage the ttraffic! And how the hell do you get anywhere suggesting this, when the emergency services do not respond to suggestions that traffic management could be improved! In our case, young lad run over by bus on Swanson Road outside school. Road was closed at Candia Road. Inept Police would not even let cars through to pick up children from daycare at least 1km short of incident scene. Traffic was simply detoured down North Candia Road- and without any traffic management, was left to get lost completely There is a detour route available via Oneills and Christian roads IF you know the area, but if you dont you would probably end up in Henderson VAlley or Ranui. I had someone trying to get to Bethells frantically ringing up because they thought there was no way through. In the end I put up a sign myself, and had to direct traffic. A small team with a map and a few signs would have had it sorted in seconds. Where is the advance planning guys!
Depending on where you live in the country! Some responding volunteer fire brigades may have additional manpower and may be able to call on what is now known as Operational Support Crews. However most roading issues where the highway is blocked is handled by the Roading Agency in the case of Highways the NZTA who have contractors they call out to set up diversions. All a great idea to have a seperate unit to do this but how often do fatal accidents block a road to justify setting a unit up!Then where do you base such unit!Do you have several units across the country! Come on if yoy think you can handle the situation better theres Volunteer Fire Brigades across the country desperatly needing additional members even in non operational roles that can look after Traffic Control and diversions. Can be done if you have the manpower and is done currently by Highways.

Just because a lot of people do not volunteer to be an ambo or a firey it does not make them less a person than those that do, we all have our directions in life and they are all different so stop basing this as your argument, you miss the point completely. The services are usually done within an hour sometimes 2 hours [as stated before] its after this that the tape measure brigade take over[as stated before] this is where the time gets longer and longer, I believe 2.45pm accident, - 7.00pm traffic gets through [correct me with details if you may] This is the point I am trying to highlight, not the blood and gore and volunteers, The system is not right and should be seriously looked at, as do the crazy drivers of course, but .it is a main highway through New Zealand.
