As the title suggests, lets say you have a friend who has inherited 10K and wants to buy a car to keep in the hope it'll mature into a desirable classic. He's reasonably handy but not interested in a re-build and wants to enjoy the odd Sunday out with his wife or special occasions.
What sort of thing would you recommend and if he's honest, he's more turned on by a healthy Aussi V8 as opposed to hi-tech.

P76 Leyland.
I'm serious, has the rarity/novelty value and you always see crowds around them at car shows.

skyline_guy_r34, Mar 11, 1:06pm
Holden VR/VS senator, with the bluebrinted and stroked 5.7L + 6 speed manual.

Low build numbers, special being stroked and 6 speed manuals, definately contention for being classic in 15 years time.

Except I think they are around 15k at the moment.

skyline_guy_r34, Mar 11, 1:13pm
Hmm guess I cant count my suggestion as its closer to double what you originally stated. Nevermind.

Some interesting selections here! I can see where you're coming from with the P76 but are they admiring looks or are they "did it get here under it's own steam!" looks.
Just kidding :-)

agree with the 406 Coupe. also early mint MX5, E36 M3,

richardmayes, Mar 11, 1:29pm
^^^Good picks fiatracer. I would own an mx5 in a heartbeat if circumstances permitted. But as the OP's shy friend likes his Aussie V8s I suspect he may not be so into 1800cc soft-tops!

woody1946, Mar 11, 1:30pm
OK, so where's your suggestion smarty

jezz43, Mar 11, 1:34pm
what about the old commys! VK wilkinshaw's or whatever they were. cant remember exactly but they were standard with a 308 or something and were stamped limited to 750 built.
again i cant exactly remember what they were but its an option

dagwood1, Mar 11, 1:34pm
Wouldn't dismiss the MX5 too quickly at all - he's quite open minded! They could be fun - are they rare enough though!
I think he's still a bit dark on the French after the Rainbow Warrior affair so don't know about the 406's!

Will modified cars become a "classic"! I always thought "stock is good".

woody1946, Mar 11, 1:54pm
Ha Ha ,just like the old WW2 guys wouldn't buy Jap or German cars

franko171, Mar 11, 1:55pm
stock every time

dagwood1, Mar 11, 1:59pm
Yep, it took several years with an Austin Maxi in the Garage before my grandfather saw the light and went Japanese. Considering he was a POW, the Maxi must have been really bad!

Hotrodpete knows it! Go for a valiant!

VL walkinshaw commodores are allready between 50 and 100k so bit higher than 10k
Stock VBVCVLV8sare getting rarer by the day as is a good 6 cyclinder one.
Ford XD XE V8sFairmont Gihas etc and any mint stock XD XE.
VT commodores are now at the price where any knob with a wallet can buy one and trash them so mint ones will suddenly dissapear as they get wrecked. It happens with most cars. HQs XAs XBsValients, were all to had once for a few hundred, now find a good cheap one.
Even a real mint VN should be considered as well.
Most cars that are now rare and pricey were "NEVER" going to be worth anything either.
As GTs and other factory specials get out of Joe Blows price range there base models or model after become the next in line to get hold of.

Holy crap we have the same grandad.
Had an orangey Maxi, served in the Solomons and absolutely hated the japs till the day he died. Actually bought a Hillman something or other and sold it as soon as he found out it was a rebadged Mitsi. Think he saw some pretty horrible stuff though too, to be fair.

dagwood1, Mar 11, 2:50pm
Close, my Grandad's Maxi was snot green and he was in Bangkok (Siam)!

dagwood1, Mar 11, 2:57pm
Cheers for the information - some good info and cars coming up.

phillip.weston, Mar 11, 2:57pm
I don't think any Hillman was a rebadged Mitsi. the only connection would have been that Hillman was owned by Chrysler and Chrysler had shares in Mitsubishi, and that both the Hillmans and Mitsubisihs were being assembled by Todd Motors.

I think your friend is going to be very hard pushed to find a decent Aussie V8 for 10K. He should think about puting in some more money and hunt around for a 2002 Monaro.

grangies, Mar 11, 3:05pm
If the Greens have their way, Sunday drives in old vehicles will be a big NO,NO !

Unless it's an antique Vespa Scooter.

dagwood1, Mar 11, 3:08pm
That would make it even more appealing to him I'm sure.

cathair, Mar 11, 3:15pm
how much do you guys think a '79 VB Commodore with a 308 trimatic in it fully restored will be worth roughly!

gunhand, Mar 11, 3:37pm
Is it factory origonal!
