It only takes a moment to look behind before openning a door just like many other things drivers need to take a moment to look for, give ways etc. I would've thought that most drivers on Tamaki would be more aware of us cyclists as there are so many of us there.

Well there is one less now isnt there trog! Truth is drivers dont look out for bikes, so if ya ride a bike on the road, you better make sure you got some insurance, and a will made out cause you may just need it.

My opinion- Single file should be LAW, If there is a cycle lane provided then using it should be LAW, If there is enough room to the left of the solid white line then staying out of the trafic lane should be LAW. Mountain bikes arnt fast but you can atleast ride on the rough verge if you need to, i think the people who ride track racing bikes on the highway are there own worst enemey because they seem to want to ride in the car lane and get in every ones way because their 10mm wide tires puncture so easily they cant ride over any of the stones/debris on the hard shoulder. The cycling kids around Tauranga give me no trouble in the truck, they are far more intelegent than the lycra clowns because kids actually get off the road and out of the way when a truck is coming. Big thumbs up to them, 5 years of trucking around Tauranga and NEVER had trouble with kids, lycra clowns try to get me to run them over every day.

the MUPPET who threw open thier car door should be charged with careless use causing death. I am SICK of ^$$&*($# throwing thier doors open into traffic. that dumbass person opening the door should think themselves lucky it wasnt the truck that ripped thier arm off instead.

The ignorance of some motorists knows no bounds. Adult cyclists also have drivers licences and cars so they do know the rules, have been tested, are licenced and do pay road and petrol taxes just like their opinionated couch-dwelling counterparts.
I worked as a courier driver sometime ago. Opening my car door into traffic 80 times a day, one soon learns to check the mirror to avoid any potential problems.
As an occasional commuter cyclist, I try to look for occupants within cars who might be about to open the door on me but in all honesty, it takes too much attention away from watching for road surface irregularities (which are a greater danger) and with many cars having factory tinted glass, it's a fruitless exercise anyway.
The trouble is, once again, another motorist who has developed lazy habits which in the wrong situation has led to someone's death. We must all remember to keep our driving up to a high standard as the consequences can be disastrous.

Seems to be the type of attitude that alot of the lycra brigade carry.
Why dont cyclist have lights on the front of bikes!
And handle bars in a more logical position where they dont have to have their heads down!
Decent tyres with good thick tread!{how many have slipped over on painted lines!}
And having a licence and a car does not give a cyclist any more right to use a vehicle without paying their fair share,motor-cyclists have to pay for the right to ride even thought they are not resonsible for most accidents. Do you see them crying out for motorists to be more shareing and careing and wanting law changes for drivers!or do you see them paying out more and more revenue just to go the same speed[somtimes slower] as some free loader cyclists.

God this really is the idiot country! So you drive a car and hate cyclists,or you ride a bike and hate cars blah blah blah, you have to remember its peoples lives at stake, and if you have no respect for that then your life is a shame!

Not read the whole thread.
Personally I (Mr Kiwigal) feel that Tamaki drive should be put back to grave road & STOP cyclists from using it at all.
That is the WROST road & something has to be done.
When I was walking the other month I had cyclists TRY to ride into me,they was comming head on to me & wouldn't move OFF their line,so I stoped & MADE them stop/go around me cos I was ready to give them a bit of my mind.I told them to go around me & just stayed where I was standing.
It was during winter & they wouldn't of got mud on their clothes etc (unlike a walker).
I was on my own & it was a single cyclist,BUT this happened twice in a HOUR on the same day.

Futhermore,I was in WINZ last year & a guy was saying how he rides a push bike & often damages cars.
I felt like puching his lights out & had to hold back from doing so in the WINZ building,he showed NO sorrow for damaging other peoples cars etc.
Rant over.

The guytold me how many side mirrors he damages per week,it was like 3 to 5 a week, thats just wrong.
Yet he never has to pay anything!

I find it strange how you have to give 1.5 metres to cyclists according to the signs, thus putting you over the centreline. Many times I have had to slow right down to avoid collision because a cyclist insists on being 1/3 into my lane.
psyclingbeast,
Nov 19, 10:33pm
Geez, I ride to work nearly every day winter / summer, stay to the LEFT of the white line and MOST drivers give a metre , cool. BUT some TOSSERS seem to like getting up close. The bike haters on here are truly pathetic. Knock me off my bike you better F*&ckin hope I cant get up .
craigsmith,
Nov 19, 10:39pm
If they're 1/3 into the lane, it's their lane too you.
Many cyclists will deliberately ride out away from the road edge, in order to give themselves a wide margin of error or to force motorists to wait behind rather than force through a narrow gap that would put them in a vulnerable situation - which many would, represented nicely by the mouth breathers in this thread. When you're dealing with the a-hole drivers in this country, again nicely represented by almost every poster above, it pays to be defensive.
None of this is to defend any dipshit cyclists who don't obey the road rules in general, damage cars/property, or whatever.
I've never seen the poor attitude from drivers so aptly show cased as in this thread. And to think it stems from the death of a cyclist knocked off her bike by some cretin opening a door (it's happened to me too - just not the subsequent death part) in front of her. Incredible.

I do love how you instantly call me a fuckwit, I'm speaking from my experience, sorry if that is a problem. And luckily I'm not an a-hole driver, even though I posted above, must be one of the few not represented huh! I don't live in a city, I'm talking rural roads here, when I come around a bend at 100km/h I do not expect to see 1 or 2 cyclists swerving side to side to make getting up the hill a little easier. Also being from a small town, most people cycling aren't wearing a helmet, never use hand signals and cross the road at will. Not all cyclists are angels like you mate.
I do feel for the cyclists innocently knocked off, hurt or killed, but it goes both ways.

I am interested to know the opinions of all those bagging cyclists by saying they should pay for this, that and anything else that can be thought of.Now if you give your child a bike for whatever reason, would you be happy to pay their way or think it better they not have one.
rustihammer,
Nov 20, 5:21am
Lets charge all the kids biking to school rego eh!What a dumb argument.Yeah there are some dopey cyclists out there, but that is more than equalled but the amount of pig ignorant motorists out there!I gave up road riding purely because of near misses - and I always kept as far left as I could. I just mountain bike now and don't have to put up with retards on the road!
boojum,

Cyclists do pay ACC.It's paid in the tax they pay as they work and as they buy goods and services. You pay it too. If you don't want to use the benefits of the money you have contributed to it by riding a bike then that's your fault.
tracey441,
Nov 20, 6:19am
The road code states you must keep as far left as possible. They also say that 30% of cycle crashes are caused by cyclists, that is the same percentage as drunk drivers or speeding motorists which is not a good look. If those 30% of cyclists caused the crash were they charged with reckless use as any other motorist would be
lordv81,
Nov 20, 6:41am
Then why do every other road user have to pay the same acc levies as you have quoted and then more on top to use the roads. While the free loader cyclists cause accidents and require millions of dollars a year to add cycle lanes and maintain cycle lanes on public roads.
urbanrefugee54,
Nov 20, 6:43am
lets face it. it's the govt that has bought in the 'user pays' rules, a lot of arrogent cyclists have increased the hate. BUT one of the articles I read stated that the road rules said about the division between cyclist & motorist is 1.5m BUT that it didn't say the car had to be that far from the cyclist & cyclists had a responsibility to ride on the other side of the white line when it allowed. so the keeping to the left [for cyclists] might mean keeping to the edge of the tarseal.
bmxer4,
Nov 20, 6:46am
Agree. I'm a cyclist and also drive a 2.5 tonne 4x4 - no excuse for being an impatient twat on the bike or behind the wheel. However, regardless of the attitude of some bikers, motorists need to realise how much bigger they are and adjust their driving accordingly; its only common sense.
johnf_456,
Nov 20, 6:46am
+1 Us motorists also pay over and over, especially when a lot of us own more than one vehicle, trailer, bike. We pay acc on every vehicle, while bikes free load off it. Despite needing more on acc, just like motorcyclists. If motorcyclists are been targeted with acc so should cyclists. Fairness.
brants,
Nov 20, 6:54am
I dont understand why cyclists are allowed to ride "two or more abreast" Its bad enough in town but especially on the highway, 80-100kph zones.
Dont they know what common sense is. When im riding a bike i keep as far to the left as i can, away from the speeding motorists that could ruin my day.
