+1 why do cycle lanes exist if they are not used.

glyn4, Mar 17, 9:48pm
By 2015 all the gas will be gone, or too expensive for Joe public to use. The use of pushbikes and small powered motorcycles will increase. Matter of time.
Mind you we may have nuclear powered cars by then.

Least you know why he is on welfare

That was the sort of comment made in 1973 when petrol quickly rose from 30 odd cents a gallon to $1 a gallon. V8's ceased production and it was doom and gloom all round. (Leyland P76 was launched at the worst time possible.) I was too young to give a stuff(or know enough). However, it seems the world kept turning and the sun still came up each morning regardless.

dr.doolittle, Mar 18, 6:28pm
they already have.

urbanrefugee54, Mar 19, 10:25am
personally I would rather see one general acc charge for all my vehicles, as I am charged seperate & very high acc on all my vehicles [2x motorbikes & diesel 4wd] - but can only drive or ride one at a time or have one accident. maybe the bike riders should be licensed & pay acc but only one charge for all vehicles owned - lets face it - if all the vehicles that are paying acc were on the roadway at the same time. how much room would there be on the roads! I think we are being conned & there is a big money pot the govt is creaming from.

mottly, Mar 19, 11:11am
looking at the roads in my area, cyclists should only be allowed to use cycling lanes - if they aren't present, then bikes shouldn't be either. The roads in my area simply don't have enough room for bikes holding up traffic, as it's too windy to pass.Just some roads should be bike free, and there'd be alot less hassels.I thought they had bike lanes in the cities!

urbanrefugee54, Mar 19, 4:10pm
I don't mind sharing the road. but the lycra crowd do get my gander with their attitude that it's ok to hold up a line of vehicles & down hills & corners. & the ones that held up the fire truck that was going to a fire should have been jailed & the keys thrown away.

afer_daily, Nov 19, 11:57am
last night on tamaki drive about 6.30 . run over by a truck after she fell from her biketrying to avoid some fool who threw their door open in front of her.

afer_daily, Nov 19, 12:07pm
ANDjust wondering who the authorities are going to lay the blame on . and if that picture of yours is current youve got a long way to go before it sees the road again.

fiatracer, Nov 19, 12:11pm
it's sad, and it *appears* the motorist was to blame in this case. but it is long overdue that cyclists woke up. Yes, NZ driving standards are generally poor, but I see cyclists every day that act both ignorantly and arrogantly, which at times combine into suicidal behaviour.

bruceeeeee, Nov 19, 12:17pm
How is the motorist to blame!
There is a cycle lane on the footpath and the cyclist was NOT using it.

chippy_45, Nov 19, 12:21pm
as i said on the stuff post on facebook. you drive a car or ride a motorcycle you must pay some kind of ACC levvy for using the roads because they ARE dangerous. cyclists however share these same roads and dont pay a cent. is there a chance in this situation the cyclist was not wearing the appropriate safety equiptment e.g high vis vest and lights. anyway i know someone is probably going to snap at me but there will be others who will see where im coming from

fiatracer, Nov 19, 12:39pm
hmmm - it's possible that every single one of them could have taken preemptive "defensive driving" measures to prevent this death. I say *possible*. i wasn't there and I'm not an expert.

mothergoose_nz, Nov 19, 12:45pm
opening a car door with on coming traffic is careless use of a motor vehicle.i know someone who did this.have always been careful opening car doors.

trogedon, Nov 19, 1:01pm
Should I even attempt to answer some of you uninformed and derogatory comments against other, completely legal roadusers!
Nah, it's probably better you were left with your heads in the sand.

+1

I too am a cyclist, but a recreational/commuter cyclist, as in i stick to the cycle lanes and keep aware on what is going on around me. I get tired of the Lycra clad racers who ride six abreast, swerve all over the place, dawdle along out of the cycle lane, then give me the finger as they nearly hit ME. The arrogance and stupidity of most road cyclists amazes me. I give courtesy where courtesy is due, eg to those cyclists like my self who show courtesy to other road users. If some cyclist wants to be a tool on the road and challenge a much larger, heavier, faster vehicle, well then they are going to suffer the consequences. Common sense ain't so common anymore!

fiatracer, Nov 19, 1:56pm
it's the "now I'm a cyclist / now I'm not" mentality that annoys me - the cyclists who ride along the road, then when it suits them shoot up onto the footpath, then back onto the road, turn left on red lights or worse, ride up to a red light, then turn left a little then cross on the pedestrian crossing then back into the lane they had been in, etc.

stevo2, Nov 19, 3:48pm
Couldnt have put it better myself mate. 100% my views exactly.
Cheers Stevo

The only problem I seem to have with Cyclists, is driving home from work, turning left onto Moorehouse Ave from Colombo Street, its a straight ahead and Left turning lane, but the issue I have is I have to keep looking in the left mirror for bikes riding flat out and going straight ahead when i'm turning left, they can be really hard to see, as often there are Buses etc behind me, so it can be really tricky to see them, they don't seem to have any sense of danger, they are happy to ride along flat out on the left side of me when I'm trying to turn left, somehow they have the right of way and can just push infront of everyone :)

lordv81, Nov 19, 4:43pm
Motor cyclists just got raped by the government for being dangerous, higher costs and fines and new headlight laws to make them safer.Yet when it comes to free loading cyclists it they are looking at motorists to make cyclists safer.
Make every cyclist using high capacity roads or roads with higher than 70kmh speed limits pay road tax,use a number plate, have a wof,and have a headlight on at all times. Then see how many start driving cars again.
But with JK spending 50 million on cycleways it shows who will be blamed and forced with more rules, laws, and probly higher rego to help the freeloaders-yep the motorist.

We were on Tamaki Drive just an hour before the accident, dropping friends off at the cruise terminal. It is a terrible piece of road. Took us over 30 mins to get from Mission Bay to the cruise terminal.

My initial reaction was "Why wasn't she in the cycle lane!"

A radio caller explained that one very well, by explaining that the cycle lane is merely a painted line on a narrow pavement that is often clogged with pedestrians who don't even realise they are sharing it and therefore it is only really suitable for slow moving tourism, not for people travelling at a fair speed.

Unfortunately, too many cyclists seem to pedal along faster than the 50kph limit, heads down, and even though the driver is responsible for checking before opening the door, it only takes a second for the cyclist to 'appear from nowhere'.

When I was a daily cyclist, I felt it was my responsibility to check the stationary cars for signs of drivers who MIGHT open their doors.(defensive cycling.) and I was never ever knocked off even though it was my only means of transport around a fairly large city.

Agree that far too many many cyclists totally ignore traffic lights and just ride on the pavements when it suits them.I am just waiting to walk out of our local cafe one day, knocking some one off his bike and into the road.

I'd have to see all the details before I called anyone a wank in this situation. I've had the wind catch a door and fling it open before, things happen, it is all chance an probability and at some point someone WILL get hurt or killed just by a bunch of circumstances and there is no one you can directly blame.

The 6 abreast Lycra wearing retards want to assert their rights as being "equal" to motorists yet I don't see cars 6 wide driving slowly and swerving all over. That guy on TV that recorded all his experiences then reports drivers was a complete WANK to, his cycling sucked.

dr.doolittle, Nov 19, 5:22pm
I've cycled Tamaki Dr a lot & had many car doors opened on me. It can sometimes be impossible to see the driver of an XJS or other sports car sitting in his seat.
I can only hope that this whole sorry sager can be a wake-up call for EVERYONE to take a step back & respect each other as people & the choices we all make.
