I agree totally, out westy west where I drive occasionally in auckland they often ride 2 abreast on westy windy roads. Don't ask me why, its just pure dangerous. Not to mention how difficult it is to pass on narrow roads and obey this 1.5m crap. When the road just fits you on it.

they are not allowed to 'impede the flow of traffic'.

Apparently the guys with the ultra thin tyres dont like to ride outside of the edgeline due to stones punctureing their ultra thin tyres.Used to love them coming through our roadworks sites, they would jump off and walk sometimes over a km in their little slippers to avoid punctures. While you get kids on BMXs and mountain bikes peddle through and pass them hobbleling along.
Another thing I noticed working on the roads is how we used to stop work if a kid came pedalling through and there was little room.It was quite hard case to see everything come to a halt including the traffic flow just to let the grinning kid pass safely, the kids useually were concertrating so hard to ride carefully and had no idea that they had the road to themselves!

I will admit to having more time & patience for kids on bikes [esp families] and ordinarly dressed people using the bike for fitness or transport. anyone that wears lycra that doesn't have a major component of high vis [esp on the open roads] gets a thumbs down & to me, are irresponsible fools

Free loading cyclists! Look at how much it costs to maintain roads, that is why you pay. Bicycles don't damage roads and don't pollute. How do you know cyclists take up more ACC resources than motorists!

Talking about acc pay not the cost of roading. Well what up keep do cyclist pay, they do not pay any acc despite been more likely to be seriously injured or permanent injury's for life. Pretty straight forward, bicycle may not damage the road but the point been here is acc. Any form of a bike, motor driven or push driven will require more acc in accident. Simple. Do motorist get free acc and rego on additional vehicles from there main vehicle. No they have to pay again, so the cyclist that own cars arguement does not buy with me. Despite motorcyclist paying through the roof because of the stats, mean while people on bikes get off scot free. When they injure themselves while biking, a good friend of mine is on acc for life as the result of a bike accident. But he has never owned a car in his life or paided any acc.
It might not be more than cars, but they do get free loaded very well. Minor accidents on a bike will always be costly vs a car with a big steel box around you. Mean while motorbikes pay big time in acc!

I own 1 car, 3 motorbikes and 2 bicycles - how much do you all want me to pay!Over $1800 a year in regos currently. I am regularly almost killed on my motorbikes everyday and have just recovered from my latest knock off my (motor)bike. I am always the innocent party, ride defensive and wear protective clothing. Charging the motoristwith careless driving only makes me feel a little better. The government has got it wrong on ACC, and charging bicycle riders wont change that. No fault means exactly that.

Yup acc is only a small part of it. The real issue is the driving standards.

Too true and while people are debating whether bicycles should be on the roads (or shot on sight), children get run over in their family's driveways. BTW, I gave up (bi)cycling to work, too dangerous! (I say this covered in scars from my motorbike crashes).

Same here, its not worth the blood knuckles. Its why I don't drive a bike regularly, heck even driving a car in a steel box is dangerous let alone a bike of any form.

The problems with cyclists only seem to happen once they remove the training wheels.

well it proves the road is too narrow to accomodateparked cars & cyclists . Cant see powers stopping parkingso a decent cycle way needs constructing , but again cyclists are a very small number who use the hiway & as theydont pay rego ACC etc cantexpect either . Now wha tIf I wanted to ride a horse on itjust as much right asthe lycra tight bum lot
icemans1,

Yep they are a small number who we just spent 50million on building cycle ways for them. There is one out cambridge that is all concrete and about 3-4m wide yet I still a saw some cyclists the other day using the road!

Let me clarify. as a close friend of the victim, at the point of impact .THERE IS NO CYCLE LANE. she was riding, and quite rightly and accurately on the road. A driver responsibility is to check mirrors before opening the door. i dont blame anyone, it was a freak and horrendous accidnt and now i have lost a beautiful friend and workmate. it is pure reaction that one swerves if an obstacle appears in front of them. as she did. there is no blame in my opinion, but instead lessons to be learnt. That stretch of road is heavily used by joggers, cyclists, and people of leisure.and it will continue to be.and if safety is to be improved then things need to be looked at.she paid for private travel insurance so ACC means F*** all right now. you can relax you views on tax and ACC levies. but for now RIP Janey. xxxx only the good die young, and you were one of them. xxxxxxx

Last march i was biking home from work and a car fail to stop at a give way sign andhit me as a result i broke and crushed my right fib/tib of theankle and now its supported with a plate, screws and wire because of it.
The driver got off lighter as she only got a ticket for failing to stop and demerits point which i think is wrong she should of be changed for but at the end of the day imstill a live.
I no longer bike to work anymorecause of fear i may get hit again so i ride a scooter
Sorry to hear about the fellow bike riders that lost their lives

I would have to say that personally I have a problem with the riders that wear the named lycra gear & not high vis & that impede traffic on hills & corners in groups. brendon61 right of way is different matter entirely - I no longer ride my horse on the road because of of a local person who tried to kill me & my horse. it's not ordinary people that seem to be the ones that make others angry. it's the lycra lot.
